John Quincy Adams Congressman, Advocate John Quincy Adams was 74 years old when he appeared before the Supreme Court on behalf of the Amistad Africans in the twilight of a long, remarkable public career. He had entered the budding U.S. foreign service 60 years before as a young teenager, taking up a post as secretary to the U.S. Minister of Russia. From this diplomatic apprenticeship Adams went on to postings as U.S. minister to the Netherlands, Prussia, Russia and England, as well as part of the American Peace Commission that negotiated the end of the War of 1812. These tours of duty abroad Adams punctuated with domestic positions and politics, including stints as Massachusetts State Senator, U.S. Senator and, under President Monroe, U.S. Secretary of State. In 1824, his public career culminated or seemed to culminate in Adams's election to the Presidency. Defeated for re-election in 1828, Adams retired briefly, but chafed at his isolation and inactivity. As he himself would admit late in his life, "incessant active intercourse with the world has made political movement to me as much a necessary of life as atmospheric air..." So in 1831 Adams re-entered public life as the U.S. Representative for the Plymouth district of Massachusetts. He held this seat for 17 years, until his death in 1848. Before the 1830s, Adams spent little political energy opposing slavery. In fact, as a diplomat he had supported the claims of American slaveowners trying to recover slaves who escaped into foreign countries meaning that he took positions much like those adopted by the Spanish authorities in the Amistad case. In 1822, when the British tried to persuade then Secretary of State Adams to allow British naval patrols search American vessels suspected of slave trading, Adams resisted. A British minister pressed, asking Adams (as he recorded in his diary) "if I could conceive of a greater and more atrocious evil than this slave-trade. I said, Yes: admitting the right of search by foreign officers of our vessels upon the seas in time of peace; for that would be making slaves of ourselves."

John Quincy Adams Sixth President (1825-1829) John Quincy Adams's tenure as James Monroe's secretary of state ranks among the most productive in the history of that office. But his often abrupt and tactless ways were ill-suited for the presidency, and when his nationalistic vision for federally sponsored development of America's potentials met with hostility in Congress, he was incapable of promoting accommodation. As a result, the accomplishments of his administration were meager indeed. At the end of his presidency, Adams declared, "the sun of my political life sets in deepest gloom." In fact, his sun was not even close to setting. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1830, he served there until his death. By then, he had been dubbed "Old Man Eloquent," and in his prolonged and successful struggle defending the antislavery movement's right to petition Congress, he had gained a circle of admirers that extended well beyond his Massachusetts constituency. When Adams sat for this portrait, he doubted that artist George Caleb Bingham could produce "a strong likeness." But Bingham did just that, and the portrait's sharp-edged vitality seems to echo Ralph Waldo Emerson's comment that the aging Adams was "like one of those old cardinals, who as quick as he is chosen Pope, throws away his crutches and his crookedness, and is as straight as a boy."

The story encompasses five generations of the Adams family (from 1720 to 1927) including two Presidents and First Ladies, three U.S.Ministers, historians, writers and family members who supported and contributed to the success of these public figures. The site's main historic features include: John Adams Birthplace, where 2nd U.S. President John Adams was born on October 30, 1735, and less than 75 yards away the John Quincy Adams Birthplace, where his son, John Quincy Adams, 6th U.S. President was born on July 11, 1767; the "Old House," home to four generations of the Adams family; the Stone Library contains more than 14,000 historic volumes and includes the book collection of John Quincy Adams; no tour is complete without a visit to the United First Parish Church, where both Presidents and the First Ladies are entombed in the Adams family crypt. There is an off-site visitor center located within one mile of the historic structures. Regularly scheduled tours of the historic homes, are offered in season (April 19th - November 10th). The park provides a trolley bus that offers transportation between sites. You must be on a guided tour to enter the historic homes. Neither he, nor Andrew Jackson , nor Henry Clay received a majority in the electoral college, and the election was decided in the House of Representatives. There Clay supported Adams, making him president. Adams appointed Clay secretary of state, over the Jacksonians' cry that the appointment fulfilled a corrupt bargain. With little popular support and without a party, Adams had an unhappy, ineffective administration, despite his attempts to institute a broad program of internal improvements. John Quincy Adams was born on July 11, 1767, at Braintree (now Quincy), Mass., the son of John Adams, the second president. He spent his early years in Europe with his father, graduated from Harvard, and entered law practice. His anti-Paine newspaper articles won him political attention. In 1794, he became minister to the Netherlands, the first of several diplomatic posts that occupied him until his return to Boston in 1801. In 1797, he married Louisa Catherine Johnson. In 1803, Adams was elected to the Senate, nominally as a Federalist, but his repeated displays of independence on such issues as the Louisiana Purchase and the embargo caused his party to demand his resignation and ostracize him socially. In 1809, Madison rewarded him for his support of Jefferson by appointing him minister to St. Petersburg. He helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, and in 1815 became minister to London. In 1817 Monroe appointed him secretary of state where he served with great distinction, gaining Florida from Spain without hostilities and playing an equal part with Monroe in formulating the Monroe Doctrine.
