Abigail Smith Adams Inheriting New England's strongest traditions, Abigail Smith was born in 1744 at Weymouth, Massachusetts. On her mother's side she was descended from the Quincys, a family of great prestige in the colony; her father and other forebearers were Congregational ministers, leaders in a society that held its clergy in high esteem. Like other women of the time, Abigail lacked formal education; but her curiosity spurred her keen intelligence, and she read avidly the books at hand. Reading created a bond between her and young John Adams, Harvard graduate launched on a career in law, and they were married in 1764. It was a marriage of the mind and of the heart, enduring for more than half a century, enriched by time.

This tally sheet documents the last presidential election in which no candidate won a majority of the electoral vote, throwing the election into the House of Representatives. John Quincy Adams won the presidency over Andrew Jackson - Courtesy of: National Archives and Records Administration ADAMS, John Quincy " dispersed all possible doubt of the independence of his country." In 1785, when his father was appointed minister to England, he decided not to stay with him in London, but to return at once to Massachusetts in order to complete his education at Harvard College. For an American career he believed an American education to be best fitted. Considering the immediate sacrifice of pleasure involved, it was a remarkably wise decision in a lad of eighteen. But Adams's character was already fully formed; he was what he remained throughout his life, a Puritan of the sternest and most uncompromising sort, who seemed to take a grim enjoyment in the performance of duty, especially when disagreeable. Returning home, he was graduated at Harvard College in 1788, and then studied law in the office of Theophilus Parsons, afterward chief justice of Massachusetts. In 1791 he was admitted to the Suffolk bar, and began the practice of law, the tedium of which he relieved by writing occasional articles for the papers. Under the signature of

67. The Education Of John Quincy Adams
Brief overview of the education of America's sixth president. Includes a letter written by a 10year-old adams to his father.
http://forerunner.com/mandate/X0069_The_Education_of_Joh.html
The Education of John Quincy Adams
America's sixth president This issue of The Mandate examines the importance of the family in shaping the destiny of a nation. The article on pages 10-11 shows that God the Creator has given parents the great responsibility of overseeing the education and character development of their children. Christian character, which can never be adequately taught in a public school setting, is essential to sustain a free nation. Modern Americans have ceased, for the most part, to fulfill this obligation. They have turned away from the God who made America great and have produced a generation that is lazy, incapable of shouldering responsibility, dishonest, and forever blame-shifting. Many Chinese students observe these modern Americans and the enormous prosperity they have inherited and conclude that freedom and prosperity must have very little to do with personal character. But that is not true. We must look deeper to find the truth. The personal history of most early Americans reveals quite a distinct contrast in character to their modern counterparts. A close examination of historic accounts leads to one conclusion: America rose to greatness because of character - and she shall fall, if current trends prevail, for lack of it. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, is an excellent example of this character instilled in early Americans. Born in 1767, John Quincy came from a New England farm family that played a significant role in shaping the course of the United States.

    John Quincy Adams Born: Birthplace:
Braintree, Mass. John Quincy Adams was born on July 11, 1767, at Braintree (now Quincy), Mass., the son of John Adams, the second president. He spent his early years in Europe with his father, graduated from Harvard, and entered law practice. His anti-Paine newspaper articles won him political attention. In 1794, he became minister to the Netherlands, the first of several diplomatic posts that occupied him until his return to Boston in 1801. In 1797, he married Louisa Catherine Johnson. In 1803, Adams was elected to the Senate, nominally as a Federalist, but his repeated displays of independence on such issues as the Louisiana Purchase and the embargo caused his party to demand his resignation and ostracize him socially. In 1809, Madison rewarded him for his support of Jefferson by appointing him minister to St. Petersburg. He helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, and in 1815 became minister to London. In 1817 Monroe appointed him secretary of state where he served with great distinction, gaining Florida from Spain without hostilities and playing an equal part with Monroe in formulating the Monroe Doctrine.

Descendants of John Adams and Elizabeth Naylor (Nailor) of Charles Co., Md., later Fauquier Co. Va.
This web page is prepared by Clifford Fenton Adams , Crestview Hills, KY 10/2003. This work may contain errors and only my direct line appears in detail. Please contact me if you have information pertaining to relatives prior to John Adams and Elizabeth, (daughter of George Nailor), of England, probably Worcestershire. According to Alice Cates, "Working against you is that John Adams was located in the part of Prince George County that was Calvert prior to the formation of Prince George about 1696 and the early Calvert records have been lost." During the war of 1812, the county court house and jail were burned. The John and Sarah Stacy Gibbons Adams family plantation house still stands in Fauquier County, Virginia. Sandy Onbey has some nice photos here. More pictures are welcome! Please write if you are a relative. The Adams Coat of Arms, at left, was prepared for Julian B. Adams, MD . It depicts a red panther atop a red and gold ducal or marqess crown, atop a silver tilting helmet decorated with a red cross and jewel. The mantle is azure and silver. The shield is silver with pines, a small badge, in chief, bearing the head of a panther, and three panthers, en passant, in pale. The motto is "Aspire, Persevere, and Indulge Not."
