Home Editorial About Us Reviews ... April Edition A Terrible Stupid Mistake
Oliver Moor Douglas Adams has been taken from us at forty-nine.
I never knew him, of course. The first time I heard of him was about twenty years ago. He was being interviewed by LBC Radio: a man with an enthusiastic, laughing voice was talking about how he'd been lying in a field looking at the stars, thinking that someone ought to write a guidebook for the Galaxy, which sounded intriguing, but at the age of twelve many ideas seemed intriguing, and I didn't give it much more of a thought. Then, two years later, I either was given, or found, a copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy . I read it till it fell apart. That in itself isn't particularly unusual- it's been the fate of several of my books - but the Guide was different. Every time it seemed fresh. Everything about it - from the descriptions of the excitingly chunky controls of the Starship Heart of Gold, to the subliminal signal, transmitted when under extreme stress, indicating exactly how far one is from one's birthplace - seemed incredibly original and in some mad way entirely believable (I believed the signal idea for years).
And of course it was funny. No, not funny. It was hysterical. Absurd.

An interstellar interview with Douglas Adams
Caleb Schaber
Daily Reporter

The well-known hitchhiker of the galaxy and astronautical cartographer of literary worlds, Douglas Adams, looks a little shagged and fagged as he exits the elevator into the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel. The college journalist, complete with a tattoo of an eight-foot snake that slithers across his back from the left hand to the right, watches Adams as he moves across the lobby looking for his interrogator.
It is only 2:45 p.m., but Adams has already spoken with The Seattle Times, a radio station and a TV station. He looks at his watch, walks up to the college reporter and decides that he must be in the wrong part of the hotel, not knowing that the strange man in front of him was the very person he had the appointment with. Adams does not ask the man if he is indeed the one he was to meet.
Adams strolls over to the side of the plush lobby and descends down the escalator to the other entrance, hoping, perhaps, for a different journalist. When Adams approaches the half-way point on the escalator, the gonzo-reporter yells down, "Excuse me. Are you Douglas Adams?"
Slowly, Adams turns his six-foot-five frame towards the interrogator, wondering if he is being stalked by a member of his galactic fan club, or the intrepid reporter he is scheduled to meet.

"I feel that the agenda of life's important issues has moved
from novelists to science writers, because they know more."
-Douglas Adams, The Onion AV Club "Moving something from one medium to another is very interesting it's a lot like carrying a picture or a piece of clothing from one bit of lighting to another. Suddenly it looks very different. What interests me a bit further down the line is the way in which the different media interrelate you can hand things off from one to another, you can exploit each other's strengths and weaknesses."

'Hitchhiker' author Adams dies
LONDON, England Douglas Adams, author of the cult science-fiction comedy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, has died at the age of 49. British-born Adams died on Friday of a heart attack in Santa Barbara, California, his London spokeswoman Sophie Astin said. He was married with a daughter. The guide, published in 1979, was a satirical adventure about a group of intergalactic travellers. It opens with the Earth being destroyed to make way for an intergalactic highway. It went on to sell more than 14 million copies worldwide and was turned into a BBC radio serial and later a TV series. The book preceded a series of best-selling titles by the author, including The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe; Life, The Universe And Everything; and So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish. The books blended satire, memorably named characters such as Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin the Paranoid Android and witty philosophy, at one point supplying the answer to "the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything." The answer was 42.

In memoriam Is there an Artificial God?
Douglas Adams' speech at Digital Biota 2 , Cambridge U.K.
    September 1998
In honour of Douglas' memory, Biota.org presents the transcript of his speech at Digital Biota 2, held at Magdelene College Cambridge, in September 1998. I would like to thank Steve Grand for providing this to us. Douglas presented this "off the cuff" which only magifies his true genius in our eyes. Bruce Damer This was originally billed as a debate only because I was a bit anxious coming here. I didn’t think I was going to have time to prepare anything and also, in a room full of such luminaries, I thought ‘what could I, as an amateur, possibly have to say’? So I thought I would settle for a debate. But after having been here for a couple of days, I realised you’re just a bunch of guys! It’s been rife with ideas and I’ve had so many myself through talking with and listening to people that I’d thought what I’d do was stand up and have an argument and debate with myself. I’ll talk for a while and hope sufficiently to provoke and inflame opinion that there’ll be an outburst of chair- throwing at the end. Before I embark on what I want to try and tackle, may I warn you that things may get a little bit lost from time to time, because there’s a lot of stuff that’s just come in from what we’ve been hearing today, so if I occasionally sort of go… I was telling somebody earlier today that I have a four-year-old daughter and was very, very interested watching her face when she was in her first 2 or 3 weeks of life and suddenly realising what nobody would have realised in previous ages—she was rebooting!

    Books by Douglas Adams
Science Fiction Author At a (November 1995?) speaking engagement, Adams, author of the Hitchhiker's Guide and Dirk Gently series of books, was asked about his religious convictions and replied that he was raised in a religious household, and while listening to a street preacher realized that it was all utter nonsense. He was an agnostic until eight years ago when he became a radical atheist. There's more to the story, as the original contributor found in an article about Richard Dawkins in the September 9, 1996 issue of The New Yorker. "Douglas Adams, a friend of Dawkins's [...] found the experience of reading [The Selfish Gene] 'one of those absolutely shocking moments of revelation when you understand that the world is fundamentally different from what you thought it was.' He adds, 'I'm hesitating to use the word, but it's almost like a religious experience."' The contributor reports that it was this event which likely led to Adams's atheism. Also, Adams is interested in making a TV documentary series about evolution.
