If not, click here , or view RealMedia help Biography More About Adams The Beginning How it all started Douglas' page at h2g2 DNA (1952-2001) Douglas Noel Adams was born in Cambridge on 11 March 1952. "I was the only kid who anybody I knew has ever seen actually walk into a lamppost with his eyes wide open. Everybody assumed that there must be something going on inside, because there sure as hell wasn't anything going on on the outside!" He was educated at Brentwood School, Essex and St John's College, Cambridge where, in 1974 he gained a BA (and later an MA) in English Literature. His first published work was a short story in Eagle comic, age 11. He started writing and peforming seriously at Cambridge, and his early work led on from material written for Footlights 'smokers'. Some of his early work featured on Weekending, and The Burkiss Way. He also collaborated with Graham Chapman (from Monty Python) and produced a Radio 4 christmas pantomime. He moved from radio to become script editor of Doctor Who, also writing several stories for the Tom Baker incarnation of the Doctor. He would work with Tom again in 1990 for the documentary Hyperland.

I enjoyed Simpson's biography of Douglas Adams, entitled Hitchhiker However, I mostly enjoyed it. I did not, however, enjoy the last chapter. Simpson seems intent on convincing his readers that Adams' heart attack happened because he was fundamentally unhappy - all because the H2G2 film again seemed to have sunk into the Hollywood quagmire. Not only does this seem somewhat unreasonable to me - here's a man with a wife and daughter and a happy family life, with millions of fans worldwide, with major successes behind him and the safe knowledge that if someone locks him in a hotel room for an adequate number of weeks he will quite definitely produce another blockbuster (he could write, he just had to be forced to sit down and do it) and I could go on and on - and even if Simpson is right, I would just much rather not know, thank you very much. I am still upset about Adams' untimely death, I do not need to be further upset by the thought that he was miserable when he died. All in all, you'd be much better off reading

There is a long passage in the sequel to his best-known book, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," where Englishman-in-exile Arthur Dent works with great earnestness and diligence to teach a spaceship's master computer how to brew a really good cup of tea. He feeds the computer so many inputs and variables that it eventually shuts down, just as the ship is attacked by a batch of particularly nasty aliens. The chapter is hilarious, a little poignant and tremendously entertaining to think about, as is most of what Adams has written. Douglas Adams was an enormously talented and imaginative man.

Even Douglas himself has been known to make the obvious joke about Cambridge, 1952, and his initials being DNA. A solitary child, he attended Brentwood School in Essex, where he studied untill 1970, when he went to Cambridge, to join Footlights. But he was never happy with them, or were they with him. He started a small theater group named Adams-Smith-Adams(Will Adams, Martin Smith, and Douglas Adams). After graduating from Cambridge, he worked on little projects and productions, none of which were incredibly sucessfull. Es ist Sonntag mittag, ich bin unterwegs, im Autoradio höre ich die ersten Nachrichten seit Freitag. Kultautor Douglas Noel Adams gestorben. Viel zu früh. Wie immer. Aber für Adams wird Elton John keines seiner alten Lieder neu betexten lassen. Der Billy Joel in uns allen zieht ein Klavier aus einer fast leeren Zigarettenschachtel und beginnt, mit mir einzustimmen: "Only the good die young". Schnell die Tränen wegdrücken, während ich am Fahrbahnrand Halt mache, um meinem besten Freund eine SMS zu senden. Trauer teilen im 21. Jahrhundert. Mit der Jahreszahl 2001 hat uns das Zeitalter der Science-Fiction eingeholt. Lange schon nirgends mehr Staubsauger, die die "2001" im Namen tragen. Die Ikonen der Achtziger dürfen gehen. Und so auch Adams. Wie besser als mit Adams "Anhalter durch die Galaxis" hätte ich den Weltschmerz Mitte der Achtziger aushalten sollen? Wie überhaupt? Der Weltschmerz ist nur mehr ein kurzes Stechen. Ich bin wehleidig, aber auch nicht zu dumm, mir einzureden, Adams Tod sei nicht tragisch. Nur ein Autor. Kein Freund oder Familienmitglied. Wo ich mir nicht sicher bin.

Apart from containing sound advice, like 'Don't Panic', the books are brimming with something or other, what's that word I'm looking for? Anyway; brimming with Stuff which will help you cope with the vagaries of Fate (or Randomness) and the absurdities of general existence. You'll never view digital watches in quite the same light again. The problem with Douglas Adams is that he wasn't all that fond of writing novels. I don't mean to say that he positively disliked writing, but apparently he was notoriously bad at keeping to deadlines because he went off on tangents (designing computer games when he should be finishing his last chapter and such). I fully understand the tendency myself, I think I'd get pretty fed up with doing just one thing, but it does mean that you get way too quickly to the end of his output... And then he had to go off and die of a heart attack at 49. Life most certainly isn't fair. Still, there's no reason to despair. It's not as bad as Marvin makes it out to be, either. In other words: Don't panic. You can always reread the books.

He was creator of all the various manifestations of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxywhich started life as a BBC Radio 4 series. Since its first airing in March 1978 it has been transformed into a series of best-selling novels, a TV series, a record album, a computer game and several stage adaptations. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's phenomenal success sent the book straight to Number One in the UK Bestseller List and in 1984 Douglas Adams became the youngest author to be awarded a Golden Pan. He won a further two (a rare feat), and was nominated - though not selected - for the first Best of Young British Novelists awards. He followed this success with The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980); Life, The Universe and Everything (1982); So Long and Thanks for all the Fish (1984); and Mostly Harmless (1992). The first two books in the Hitchhiker series were adapted into a 6 part television series, which was an immediate success when first aired in 1982. Other publications include Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (1987) and Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul (1988). In 1984 Douglas teamed up with John Lloyd and wrote The Meaning of Liff and after a huge success The Deeper Meaning of Liff followed this in 1990). One of Douglas’s all-time personal favourites was written in 1990 when he teamed up with zoologist Mark Carwardine and wrote Last Chance to See – an account of a world-wide search for rare and endangered species of animals.
