But replaying to repair missteps can be tedious. More than a decade after Infocom released the text games Hitchhiker's Guide and Bureaucracy , Douglas Adams returns to the computer gaming world with Starship Titanic Unfortunately, it's no good. Damn. I shall explain why, conforming to my usual habit when trashing games with fairly specific examples. So this review contains a bunch of spoilers. On the other hand, my big complaint is that the game is unsolvable without cheating, so maybe that's okay. Up to you. The scenario is straightforward. You're sitting at home, and this spaceship crashes into it. Into your home, that is. Well, precisely, the bottommost tip of the docking keel crashes into your home. The spaceship itself is bigger. A bit. It is called "Titanic", after all.

I've got to admit that brainstorming questions to ask Douglas Adams is kind of like imagining how you might act should you be given a million dollars. Do you commit to the obvious and go on a shopping spree, or do you get creative? Well, we tried to do both. We asked Mr. Adams the obligatory questions about his new game as well as got a little creative. Did you ever know the man likes to Scuba dive? Or perhaps that he's a huge fan of Sushi? Well, you do now. So, without further ado, our interview with Mr. Douglas Adams. MacReactor: Here we are and Starship Titanic is finally coming to not just our platform, but your platform. How long have you been a Mac user (or an Apple customer for that matter)? DA: I bought my first Mac the very day the first Mac came out. I've used Macs (many, many of them, even a PB5300...) ever since. We approached them. I'd enjoyed doing the Hitchhiker Game, which was a conversation based text-only game. Those games disappeared in the mid eighties with the coming of graphics, only the graphics weren't any good! I was waiting for the opportunity to do a game that would incorporate a conversation-based interaction in a beautifully designed graphics game. How did you create Starship Titanic's basic premise? Did the story evolve over time or did you have a pretty clear idea of what you wanted to do?

DOUGLAS ADAMS' VIEW OF AUSTRALIA The Douglas Adams of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy fame Australia is a very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the Bottom half of the planet. It is recognisable from orbit because of many unusual features, including what at first looks like an enormous bite taken out of its southern edge; a wall of sheer cliffs which plunge deep into the girting sea. Geologists assure us that this is simply an accident of geomorphology and plate tectonics, but they still call it the "Great Australian Bight" proving that not only are they covering up a more frightening theory, but they can't spell either. The first of the confusing things about Australia is the status of the place. Where other land masses and sovereign lands are classified as either continent, island, or country, Australia is considered all three. Typically, it is unique in this. The second confusing thing about Australia are the animals. They can be divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and Sheep. It is true that of the 10 most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9 of them. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9 most poisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them. However, there are curiously few snakes, possibly because the spiders have killed them all. But even the spiders won't go near the sea.

He once asked my advice. He was contemplating going back to university to read science, I think specifically my own subject of Zoology. I advised against it. He already knew plenty of science. It rings through almost every line he wrote and through the best jokes he made. As a single example, think of the Infinite Improbability Drive. Douglas's ear for science was finely tuned. He thought like a scientist, but was much funnier. It is fair to say that he was a hero to scientists. And technologists, especially in the computer industry. His unjustified humility in the presence of scientists came out touchingly in a magnificent impromptu speech at Cambridge conference which I attended in 1998 . He was invited as a kind of honorary scientist a thing that happened to him quite often. Thank goodness somebody switched on a tape recorder, and so we have the whole of this splendid extempore
