by Jeff Sartain It's rare when a DVD release of a film does better than the original theatrical release, but such is the case with Terry Gilliam's masterful 1998 adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's American classic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . Woefully misrepresented in stupid advertisements and overburdened by an 1100 screen release against 1998's summer blockbuster stinker, Godzilla Fear and Loathing folded quickly in box offices, only earning back half of its $18 million budget. Luckily, that wasn't the end of this picture. Word of mouth spread as the few lucky souls who viewed the film in the theater told their friends, setting the stage for a Hunter S. Thompson revival of sorts. Thompson's original 1971 book climbed quickly back to the top of the bestseller charts, and audiences eagerly awaited the home release of Terry Gilliam's adaptation, no longer playing in theaters. By winter of 1998, the word-of-mouth publicity and the reissue of Thompson's original book guaranteed that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas finally found its audience. Since 1998, cult popularity has made

Author's Product Rating
Pros
Honest, interesting writing about a man's journey to find himself.
Cons Drug-induced trips and reality sometimes get a bit confusing. The Bottom Line Acosta's writing is so honest and engaging that, was he still alive, he could probably rile up masses to do his bidding. Full Review Very little information about Oscar "Zeta" Acosta is available on the internet or in books. Most of what's discussed in even those few pieces of remembrance are Acosta's wild lifestyle, the fact that he worked as a lawyer for the Chicano civil rights movement during the '60s and that he was the model for Dr. Gonzo
