Chicano activist Oscar 'Zeta' Acosta was the inspiration for Hunter Thompson's hell-raising buddy in 'Las Vegas,' but his true legacy remains in the shadows.
Oscar "Zeta" Acostaan outrageous lawyer who once subpoenaed every member of the Los Angeles County grand jury to prove a pattern of discrimination against Mexican Americansis somewhat of a Chicano folk legend.
He was a driven, hell-raising attorney who was involved in high-profile civil rights cases in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early '70s and inspired the character of Dr. Gonzo in Hunter S. Thompson's surreal book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
Acosta eventually gave up law and wrote two semi-autobiographical books, and then disappeared like a puff of smoke off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico, in the spring of 1974. But not before leaving an indelible mark on the pages of L.A. political history and Chicano literature.
His disappearance took place three years after the notorious drug-enhanced trip to Las Vegas that is the subject of Thompson's book and the current Terry Gilliam movie starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro.

Oscar Zeta Acosta
Oscar Zeta Acosta April 8 - ?) is (was?) an attorney author politician and Chicano activist who was portrayed (or fictionalized) as Hunter S. Thompson 's sidekick Dr. Gonzo in Thompson's book, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (also titled, A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream Acosta was born in El Paso, Texas , and raised in a small rural town near Modesto, California . Acosta's father was drafted during World War II , so young Oscar had to take care of the family. At times, Acosta felt like an outsider and he presents his feelings of alienation, mistrust, and dislocation in his works. He was both an intelligent and sensitive student. After finishing high school, Acosta joined the U.S. Air Force. He then worked his way through college, attended law school, and passed the California Bar exam in 1966. In 1967, Oscar began working as an antipoverty attorney in Oakland, California In , Acosta ran for sheriff of Los Angeles County against Peter Pitchess, and received more than 100,000 votes. During the campaign, he defended the anti-establishment Chicano group Catolicos por La Raza, spent a couple of days in jail for contempt of court , and vowed to do away with the Sheriff's Department as it was then constituted. Acosta, known for loud ties and a flowered attache case with a Chicano Power sticker, didn't come close to Sheriff Pitchess' 1,300,000 votes but did beat Everett Holladay, Monterey Park Chief of Police.

Editorial Reviews Reviews:
"In this exciting new book, Frederick Luis Aldama has done an outstanding job of remapping 'magical realism"Werner Sollors, Henry B. and Anne M. Cabot Professor of English Literature and Professor of Afro-American Studies, Harvard University. "Frederick Luis Aldama offers a vigorous revisionary perspective on postcolonial literature and, more specifically, on the much discussed phenomenon of magicorealism. He has a commanding knowledge of postcolonial theory, and he performs a welcome critical task in demonstrating how it tends to confuse the confines of the academy with the contours of the real world, textuality with ontology. Aldama himself is a political critic, but he sanely argues that the arena of any serious politics is the world of living people and not a text"Robert Alter, Professor of Comparative Literature, University of California at Berkeley and author of Canon and Creativity. "Providing a lucid and cogent critique of the tendency in contemporary criticism to ontologize "magical realism," a tendency that implicitly articulates a relatively simple mimetic relationship between "magical realism" and various postcolonial cultures, Frederick Aldama instead posits a theory of what he calls "rebellious mimetics" that introduces a complex aesthetic and political mediation in that relationship. In doing so, he weaves together a series of excellent analyses of novels and films by authors and artists as diverse as Salman Rushdie, Ana Castillio, Oscar Zeta Acosta, Julie Dash, and Hanif Kureishi. This is a very significant contribution to the study of this genre"Abdul R. JanMohamed, Professor of English, University of California, Berkeley.

Probably one of the least successful films at the time of its release, Terry Gilliam's adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's cult novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas has, in the intervening years, itself managed to garner a certain cult status. Which is probably as it should be. Thompson once described his co-conspirator Oscar Zeta Acosta as "...one of God's own prototypes - a high-powered mutant of some kind who was never even considered for mass production. He was too weird to live and too rare to die..." This probably would serve as a fitting epitaph for this film, too. Some things just are not meant for mainstream consumption. For those not familiar with the novel (or the film); in 1971, gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson was dispatched by

    75. Fearnloathing.com -- Everything About The Movie "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas"
to live, and too rare to die is taken from the foreword of Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, the semiautobiographical novel written by oscar zeta acosta.
    http://www.fearnloathing.com/movie/goofs.html
    Goofs MISTAKES IN THE MOVIE
Continuity: When the pair first arrives on the strip, there's a banner over two casinos displaying that the Mint 400 race's prize money is $1,000. Later on at the race, there's two signs that display the winnings as $50,000. Revealing mistakes: After Dr. Gonzo takes over driving through the desert in the red convertible during the opening scene, the gear shift for the automatic transmission is all the way up, indicating it to be in PARK. Crew or equipment visible: When Raoul Duke leaves the Mint Hotel and drives out into the desert, the shadow of the film crew's scaffold is visible to the left of the Las Vegas sign. Also the shadow of a camera visible when Duke calls Gonzo near Baker. While Duke is trying to get Dr. Gonzo off the Carousel Bar, the camera can be seen in one of the mirrors on the side of the carousel as it spins around. Anachronism: When Duke is driving away after dropping his attorney off next to the plane at the airport, the plane on the right has a dancing plane on the side. This logo belongs to Valujet, an airline that did not exist in 1971. More Mistakes: When Johnny Depp’s character is driving on the road in the desert and looks into his mirror at the approaching cop, the view is not correct. The cop sits on the wrong side of the car and the car is driving on the wrong side of the road. And the first time we see Jonny Depp enter the Circus-Circus after taking lungfuls of ether, he looks into one of those huge distorting mirrors, and in freeze-frame, you can clearly see camera man walking along side him.
