Oscar Zeta Acosta
Oscar Zeta Acosta (April 8, - ?) is (was?) an attorney author politician and Chicano activist who was portrayed (or fictionalized) as Hunter S. Thompson 's sidekick Dr. Gonzo in Thompson's book, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (also titled, A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream Acosta was born in El Paso, Texas , and raised in a small rural town near Modesto, California. Acosta's father was drafted during World War II , so young Oscar had to take care of the family. At times, Acosta felt like an outsider and he presents his feelings of alienation, mistrust, and dislocation in his works. He was both an intelligent and sensitive student. After finishing high school, Acosta joined the U.S. Air Force . He then worked his way through college, attended law school, and passed the California Bar exam in 1966. In 1967, Oscar began working as an antipoverty attorney in Oakland, California In , Acosta ran for sheriff of Los Angeles County against Peter Pitchess, and received more than 100,000 votes. During the campaign, he defended the anti-establishment Chicano group Catolicos por La Raza, spent a couple of days in jail for contempt of court , and vowed to do away with the Sheriff's Department as it was then constituted. Acosta, known for loud ties and a flowered attache case with a Chicano Power sticker, didn't come close to Sheriff Pitchess' 1,300,000 votes but did beat Everett Holladay, Monterey Park Chief of Police.

They say Oscar Zeta Acosta disappeared off the coast of Mazatlan sometime in 1974. Vanished off the map. After years of deep-doodoo drug capering and ballsy Brown Power barristering, the legendary Acosta offed himself into the deep blue murk of one too many strange trips, leaving in the words of Hunter S. Thompson a "shitrain" of drug-hit theories and Houdini vagaries in his wake. See also... ... by Shermakaye Bass

... from August 5, 1999 This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Brown Buffalo's fateful trip, a quarter-century since "witnesses" saw him board a boat and head out into the ocean. And twenty-five years later, his disappearance is still unresolved. No death certificate, no letters home, no clues, no body. Over the years, the fabled Dr. Gonzo of Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a real-life attorney whose on-the-street and in-the-courtroom persona was as surreal as his Brown Buffalo alter-ego has become something of an American Loch Ness monster. His legacy lives through various unsubstantiated sightings, through his writings, and through the bizarre theories that still abound regarding "Whatever Happened to Oscar Acosta"?

An excellent book for scholars and creative writers alike.

Magical realism has long been associated with Latin American literature and film. Aldama (University of Colorado, Boulder) examines its connections to other cultures as well. In five chapters, plus an introductory discussion of terminology and a coda, he emphasizes the need for precision in distinguishing between aesthetics and ontology while analyzing the films of Dash and Kureishi, the novels of Rushdie, and the Chicano/a narratives of Acosta and Castillo. Aldama posits the importance of st...

The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, Oscar Zeta Acosta Borderlands/ La Frontera The House on Mango Street Sandra Cisneros Days of Obligation , Richard Rodriguez New World Border Always Running , Luis J. Rodriguez Copy Packet Course Description In this course we will be examining the development of Chicano/Chicana identity, as it has been voiced in the latter half of the twentieth century. Though we will examine the development of the Chicano in representations as early as Cabeza de Vaca’s 1542 colonial narrative The Account , our primary focus will be on literature written after the 1960s and the rise of Chicanismo as a defiant social consciousness in the United States. We will be looking at the different ways that writers have used evocations of the land, language, history, and culture to define a distinctive Chicano identity. Along the way we will be exploring questions and controversies that have surrounded the term "Chicano." What, if anything, for example distinguishes the Chicano from the Mexican-American? How does Chicano culture and identity intersect or contrast with other Latino identities in the United States? Do questions of gender or sexuality complicate or suggest alternatives to a standardized notion of what it means to be Chicano or Chicana? In addition to the texts, we will be examining other cultural worksfilms such as

I'm on the last page of 'The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo' by Oscar Zeta Acosta - Now the quandary! do I finish this fantastic book tonight or wait till I'm on the train tomorrow? umm... The last three years has been a very strange journey in terms of aouthers/books. I've been Trout Fishing with Richard Brautigain, taken junk in the Amazon Jungle, Tangiers and the south of France with Bill Burroughs. Ripping it up Dr Gonzo style, globally travelled to some extremely dark places with Mr and Mrs Bowles - and a whole host of other weirdo's like Kerouac, Maclaren-Ross, Russell Hoban. Finally ending up here with the Oscar Acosta... To hell with it, I will finish it tonight... Goodnight... Posted by davinian on October 31, 2003 12:11 AM Post a comment?
