OSCAR ZETA ACOSTA
Oscar Acosta was born sometime in 1936, and it is not known whether he is alive or dead (my theory is that he is dead - but note, Paul Perry in Fear and Loathing writes that Rolling Stone received a hospital bill for a broken arm for a patient named Oscar Acosta in 1977. RS was unable to trace the bill any farther than the hospital). He was a prominent Chicano lawyer in California and put the entire jury system on trial for racism. A powerful writer and speaker, his downfall was brought on by health problems, drugs and bad connections. He wrote two books: The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo and The Revolt of the Cockroach People . Recently, a collection of his writing was published. I finally got around to adding all the new stuff on Oscar that I have been promising for almost a year. I hope you enjoy all the new Cockroach pictures and text.
This is the infamous picture that appeared on the back cover of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . Oscar insisted that the picture be used, even though he risked exposing himself. Numerous parts of

The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo
Oscar Zeta Acosta Here it isthe first "hippie" autobiography! Brown Buffalo follows Oscar Zeta Acosta's rather erratic progress through life-from his humble Chicano beginnings, through law school, a series of freaky, Californian-style trips, coincidences, calamities, and meanderings which finally throw him up against the rather sinister "Mr King", notorious journalist extraordinaire. And as a chilling reminder that old-fashioned "reason" can't be kept down, the whole loony tale is punctuated by icy comments from Dr Serbin, Buffalo's cool, humourless, Ivy-leage shrink. Currently one of Oscar Zeta Acosta's chief cliams to notoriety lies in his capacity as Hunter (alias Raoul Duke) Thompson's lawyer. (Do you remember the lunatic attorney who went along for the ride in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas ?) And as he exlores the possiblities of a new lifestyle, Buffalo's story races along with a similar speedy intensity. But now he becomes an author in his own right and this book will bring joy to the hearts of all those who despair of ever agian finding a contemporary writer whose heart is where their concerns are at.

Oscar Zeta Acosta
Oscar Zeta Acosta (April 8, 1935-) was a writer, lawyer, and political activist. He was born in El Paso, Texas and was raised in California's San Joaquin Valley, near Modesto. Because Acosta's father was drafted during World War II , Oscar held much responsibility in helping to take care of the family. As an attorney his activities began in Oakland but it was in East Los Angeles where he gained notoriety, prior to his mysterious disappearance in Mexico in the Spring of 1974.
Acosta is most well known as the author of two of the most important novels of the Chicano Protest Movement, Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972), and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973). Both novels are highly acclaimed as major contributions to the Chicano literary renaissance. They are semiautobiographical and relate to Acosta's search for self-identity in the midst of an Anglo society at a time of great social unrest within the Chicano community.
Immediately following high school, at the age of seventeen, Acosta enlisted in the Air Force and was honorably discharged after four years of service. During a tour of service in Latin America, Acosta converted to Protestantism and became a Baptist missionary in a leper colony in Panama, although later, in

Acosta Zeta, Oscar
Although born in El Paso, Texas on April 8, 1935, Acosta was raised in a small rural town near Modesto, California. Because Acosta's father was drafted during World War II, Oscar held much responsibility in helping to take care of the family. At times, Acosta felt like an outsider and he presents his feelings of alienation, mistrust, and dislocation in his works. He was both an intelligent and sensitive student, however in high school he began to abuse alcohol and later drugs. Finishing high school, Acosta joined the air force, showing that he was capable of being disciplined by following rules and regulations. He then worked his way through college, attended law school, and was eventually admitted to the California Bar on June 28, 1966. In 1967, Oscar began working as an attorney in Oakland for an antipoverty agency. While working in Oakland, Acosta wrote Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, which shows how the complex relationship between Acosta, the writer, and Acosta, the subject is difficult to understand and critique. From the perspective of a confused and alienated individual who becomes a Chicano lawyer-activist, a major theme presented is his process of formation and transformation. His first novel

Acosta was last heard from in May, 1974, with a telephone call from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, to his son Marco. The journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson, who was Acosta's close friend and confidante, speculated on Acosta's untimely disappearance as either a political assassination or murder at the hands of drug dealers. Acosta is presumed dead.
