Chinua Achebe and the Language of the Colonizer
This page last revised 19 May 1998 The African Trilogy A powerful instrument of control used by the colonizing powers is the instrument of language. Language forms a huge part of the culture of a people - it is through their language that they express their folk tales, myths, proverbs, history. For this reason, the imperial powers invariably attempted to stamp out native languages and replace them with their own. As Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin point out, there are two possible responses to this control - rejection or subversion. ( The Post-Colonial Studies Reader, The African Trilogy Any reader of The African Trilogy comes away with at least a limited knowledge of Igbo words and phrases. Some words such as obi, chi, osu, and egwugwu become assimilated very quickly into this knowledge through the way in which Achebe scatters them casually through the text. Others, which occur less frequently, require translation or a few words of explanation, such as ilo (the village playground), or

MONDAY, MAY 19
For his "major contribution to world literature" and his defining of "a modern African literature that was truly African," Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe has been hailed as one of the "1000 Makers of the Twentieth Century" (London's Sunday Times ). Achebe is the author of five critically acclaimed novels of enduring quality. Things Fall Apart (1958), his first book, has the stature of a classic, and is often set alongside the great Greek or Shakespearean tragedies. In spare, elegant prose, Achebe explores the depths of the human condition, delineating the devastating consequences of the collision of African and European cultures. His most recent novel, Anthills of the Savannah (1987, short-listed for a Booker Prize) is as unsentimental as it is unsparing. Achebe is also a renowned poet, short-story writer, essayist, and editor. He founded Okike: An African Journal of New Writing , which continues to be published at the University of Nigeria. Of his provocative essay collection Hopes and Impediments (1988), a

PW gives the same a *** rating in New Internationalist April 2003 p31. `Drawing on examples from … Ama Ata Aidoo, Amos Tutuola and Nadine Gordimer as well as his own experiences on the publication of his first novel, Things fall apart , Achebe underlines the importance of authentic home-grown storytelling as a fundamental political tool in Africa`s struggles to free itself from the colonial yoke.`

http://www.usafricaonline.com/chidoachebe.html
Literary giant Chinua Achebe returns "home" from U.S., to love and adulation of community Prof. Achebe has been a significant and binding source for an engaging understanding of African pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial history and realities. I believe that such insight has made him a favorite of African-Americans, and other scholars and regular folks in search of a better, realistic understanding of Africa, at least, from Achebe's utilization of his rich and dynamic Igbo ancestry, in south eastern Nigeria. I share the same ancestry.
The most translated writer of African heritage, Prof. Chinua Achebe, has returned to his historic home in Ogidi, Anambra State, to the joy and adulation of well-wishers. He had been residing in New York as a visiting scholar to some universities in Massachusetts, and Connecticut, and Europe. The man who is famous for his universally acclaimed ease of writing and story-telling through some of his works like Things Fall Apart (1958); No Longer at Ease (1960), and Arrow of God (1964rev. 1974), and Anthills of the Savannah (1987), was quick to express his outrage and concern regarding the destruction of the moral fabric and ethics in Nigeria's campuses by cults. He said that the "alarming rate of cultism in our institutions is only a symptom of the great disease that befell this country following its collapse, and it may continue until the disease is cured." Achebe is advocating for "severe" punishment for what calls "abhorrent" conduct by those who have brought such decay to the colleges."

Lit 165/168: Things Fall Apart
Chinua Achebe on the Role of the African Writer
In 1964, Achebe was confronted with the idea that African writers should deal with the here-and- now rather than the past. His answer:
He writes of the relation of art, morality, and politics:
And he returns repeatedly to the topic of colonization, its impact, and its legacy:

Without subscribing to the view that Africa gained nothing at all in her long encounter with Europe, once could still say, in all fairness, that she suffered many terrible and lasting misfortunes. In terms of human dignity and human relations the encounter was almost a complete disaster for the black races. It has warped the mental attitudes of both black and white. In giving expression to the plight of their people, black writers have shown again and again how strongly this traumatic experience can possess the sensibility. They have found themselves drawn irresistibly to writing about the fate of black people in a world progressively recreated by white men in their own image, to their glory and for their profit, in which the Negro became the poor motherless child of the spirituals and of so many Nigerian folk tales. ("The Black Writer’s Burden," 1966)
