Ebony
June, 2000 by Kevin Chappell
NEARLY 15 years ago, an unknown father stood on a crumbling tennis court in Compton, Calif., and told his little daughter Venus that she was going to be one of the best tennis players in the world. This was a bold prediction, for the father was a neighborhood tennis coach and he knew that the odds of this happening were astronomical. After all, no Black person had dominated the game of tennis since Arthur Ashe won Wimbledon in 1975, and no Black woman had won a major tournament since Althea Gibson won the U.S. championships and Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958. But as it turned out, the father (aka Richard Williams) knew best. To the consternation of the tennis establishment and the delight of tennis fans, young Venus and her younger sister, Serena, climbed to the top of professional tennis. The journey was capped off last year by Serena's U.S. Open win, in which she beat No. 1-seeded Martina Hingis in straight sets.

Tennis in the New Millennium Today, many Los Angeles inner-city high school tennis players are being passed over for tennis scholarships because they do not have the training or rankings. The Venus and Serena Williams Tutorial/Tennis Academy of Los Angeles addresses this problem by providing an atmosphere where all students can thrive, interact, and develop by offering not only tennis lessons, but also tutoring, seminars for the PSAT and SAT tests, seminars on how to complete college applications, mentoring, and guest speakers that discuss different career possibilities.

August, 1998 by Kevin Chappell
Superstar and her supersister dazzle tennis world WHEN Venus Williams won the coveted Lipton Invitational earlier this year, the tennis world reeled. Not since Althea Gibson won Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958 had a Sister caused such a stir within the White country club sport of tennisand rarely has anyone, Black or White, become among the game's best in the cavalier way that Williams has. The 18-year-old Compton, Calif., native used speed, agility and a 100-plus-miles-per-hour serve (one was even clocked at a blazing 122 miles per hour, the second-fastest serve in Women's Tennis Association history) to overpower her opponents and win the Lipton title, her first singles championship. By doing so, the 6-foot-2 Williams moved into the Top 10 for the first time. But the rankings don't tell the whole story. In fact, some tennis insidersmany of whom have followed Venus since she was 7say that when Venus is at the top of her game, she is the best player in the world. While the who's-the-best debate will undoubtedly continue, there is no doubt Venus has single-handedly energized the lackluster sport of women's tennis and has become the hottest sports commodity since golf's Tiger Woods captured the Masters title in 1996. Smart, photogenic and good, she is being overwhelmed by accolades and besieged by endorsement deals. She's "a promoter's dream," says Bart McGuire, head of the Women's Tennis Association.

Venus sustained her injury in the semifinals at Wimbledon this year. Story Tools LOS ANGELES (Reuters) Serena and Venus Williams, who have been sidelined since Wimbledon, are planning to make their tour comebacks in Australia in January. The sisters will again be absent when the elite, eight-woman WTA Tour Championships starts in California on Wednesday. But six-times grand slam champion Serena confirmed on Monday that she would play in the Hopman Cup mixed team event in Perth starting on January 3. Venus, meanwhile, said she was targeting the Australian Open from January 19-February 1 in Melbourne for her tournament return. Reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion Serena had knee surgery in August while Venus has been nursing an abdominal tear since the All-England championships in July. "I'm definitely planning on playing the Australian (Open)," Venus told media while refusing to commit to any warm-up events.

Some spectators had trouble figuring out what Venus Williams' outfit was all about. "Venus's fashion front" said the tabloid Herald Sun newspaper next to a front page photo of the elder Williams sister in the revealing blue-and-black, combination bra and low-cut top she wore for the first time on Tuesday. "The ($39.2) million ace wore a skirt teamed with a complicated strappy top that kept stunned fans guessing whether it was a too-tiny bra or a two-tone slashed-front top," it said of the gravity-defying outfit. Venus, 20, recently signed a $40 million deal with sportswear giant Reebok and is studying fashion at a Florida university.

Venus back on track with Dubai win
Venus Williams at full stretch during her win over Alicia Molik in Dubai. Story Tools DUBAI, United Arab Emirates Venus Williams re-booted her 2004 season with a straight sets win over Australian No.1 Alicia Molik in the Dubai Open. Former world number one Williams, seeded two, beat 23-year-old Molik 6-3 6-4, returning to action after an injury sustained in Tokyo three weeks ago. She had only returned to action in the Australian Open last month after a six-month layoff caused by an abdominal injury picked up at Wimbledon. "I haven't had to have surgery, so in a way I'm fortunate. But I have had injuries that are hard to heal," said Williams, who surprisingly lost to Lisa Raymond in the third round at the Australian Open. "I think it's possibly good to have some time off. I think having time off and returning to some kind of normality will lengthen my career. "I got to wake up late, which was an extremely new experience. That was nice. I did my physiotherapy, of course, and did what training I could."

Venus and Serena Williams - Growing Up
Venus and her younger sister, Serena (who is 18 months younger,) grew up in Los Angeles where they lived with their parents and three older sisters. They both started playing tennis when they were just four years old. The Williams family didn't have very much cash , so they couldn't buy any new tennis balls. Instead they played with old balls they found. The two sisters couldn't afford expensive tennis lessons at a ritzy country club either - so their dad, Richard, bought a book on tennis and taught them himself. The two sisters smashed balls on beat-up, old tennis courts for up to six hours a day while their dad, who had never played much tennis before, read instructions from his book.

    An interview with: VENUS WILLIAMS
THE MODERATOR: Questions for Venus, please. Q. In general, how do you feel about the way you're playing? VENUS WILLIAMS: I feel very well. I felt my forehand down the line right now isn't where I want it to be. I feel like I'm rushing a little bit, not enough top spin. But other than that, I feel confident. Especially in the big points. I feel like it's gonna go my way. I think also today I had a few service games when I was down 30-love and I was able to serve myself out of it or hit myself out of it, whichever way. So that was a good point. Q. As you ascend in your career, do you think it's good to have a rival like Martina, plays completely different, tests you in different ways. Do you feel it's helped you? VENUS WILLIAMS: I haven't even thought about that. I think what's helped me the most is getting out there and practicing. Q. But when you go into a match against somebody who's not a power-player, do you feel that you can still play the same way and that she's not going to try to do something to throw you off?
