BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY Ranked Newsweek . Venus, born in 1980, and Serena, the youngest daughter, showed promise from the start. "Venus and Serena took to tennis as soon as rackets were put in their hands," older sister Lyndrea told Sport magazine. Newsweek Quickly Rose in WTA Ranks By the following year her world ranking had risen as high as number 21, and both Williams and her sister, Venus, were bona-fide celebrities. She served notice that her time had come when she advanced to the semifinals of a Sydney, Australia tournament by beating the then third-ranked woman in the world, Lindsay Davenport, who went on to become the United States Open champion that year. Expected to do well in her first "Grand Slam" tournament, the Australian Open, she had the bad luck of having to face her sister in the second round after ousting ninth-ranked Irina Spirlea in the first round. Venus emerged victorious, and

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Serena Williams (born September 26 ) is a famous women's tennis player, who has been ranked number 1 by the WTA on many occasions. She is the younger sister of another female tennis champion, Venus Williams She was born in Saginaw, Michigan and when she and her four sisters were young, their parents, Richard and Oracene, or Brandy, took them to the poor and sometimes violent Los Angeles suburb of Compton . There, her father dreamed of making at least one of his daughters a tennis superstar, hoping that involvement in sports would give them a way out of that neighborhood. Both Venus and Serena Williams would be taken to Compton area public tennis courts to practice when they were young, and they had to dodge bullets many times during the early practice days. When Serena was four and a half, she won her first tournament , and she entered 49 tournaments before the age of 10, winning 46 of them. At one point, she replaced sister Venus as the number one ranked tennis player aged 12 or under in California In , Richard Williams, saying that he hoped to prevent his daughters from facing racism, stopped sending them to national junior Tennis tournaments, and Serena attended a Tennis school run by professional player Ric Micci instead. Micci had already helped the careers of

SportsLine.com wire reports ROME Serena Williams missed shots. She let a lead slip away. She had trouble taking control. Advertisement After nearly a month off with a knee injury, Williams was rusty Tuesday. The important part, as she pointed out, is that she won. Wearing her self-described "Wonderwoman" outfit, Williams beat Spain's Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 7-5, 6-3 to reach the Italian Open's third round. "It was a struggle today: I hit a lot of fly balls, I couldn't hit the ball in," she said. "But, hey, at least I got through it." Williams lost the first two games, won five in a row, then lost three straight to make it 5-5 in the first set. Williams also lost the first two games of the second set before taking control for good. Williams had not played since pulling out of a tournament in Charleston, S.C., last month, when her left knee flared up. She had surgery on that knee in August and returned to action in March, winning her first tournament back. The 38th-ranked Sanchez Lorenzo hits with two hands on both her forehand and backhand and was able to dictate some of the points Tuesday. But she couldn't keep up on key exchanges when Williams stepped up her play.

serena williams • tennis Player. serena and Venus williams join tennis pioneer Althea Gibson in our special loop on Black History.
http://www.who2.com/serenawilliams.html
SERENA WILLIAMS Tennis Player Serena and her sister Venus Williams became stars of women's tennis in the late 1990s. The sisters were African-Americans, then a rarity in pro tennis, and quickly became known for their powerful games and flashy outfits. Like Tiger Woods , Serena and Venus were child prodigies who began playing their chosen game before kindergarten. Serena is a year younger than Venus and (at 5'10") about three inches shorter, but she was the first sister to win a major tournament by claming the singles title at the 1999 U.S. Open. Serena went on to become the dominant women's tennis player of the early 2000s; in 2002-03 she won the "Serena slam" by holding all four grand slam titles at once: the 2002 French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles, and the 2003 Australian Open.

Capriati, Serena Williams peaking at right time
Posted: Monday May 10, 2004 5:30PM; Updated: Tuesday May 11, 2004 1:31AM
ROME (AP) Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati are hoping their bodies and games will be healthy just at the right time: for the French Open and Wimbledon. Williams' left knee is feeling good again, while Capriati just registered her best performance of the year, reaching the semifinals at the German Open. Capriati also is working with a new coach, in addition to her father. Both are among the eight top-seeded players at the Italian Open, so they had Monday off. Williams won at the Foro Italico in 2002, using that victory as a stepping stone for her "Serena Slam," a streak of four straight wins in majors through the 2003 Australian Open. After winning Wimbledon last year, however, Williams had knee surgery and missed eight months. She came back to the tour in March and won right away, at the Nasdaq-100 Open. Two tournaments later, her knee began to bother her again, and she pulled out of last month's event in Charleston, S.C. Now Williams says she is pain-free again.

Venus and Serena Williams - Growing Up
Venus and her younger sister, Serena (who is 18 months younger,) grew up in Los Angeles where they lived with their parents and three older sisters. They both started playing tennis when they were just four years old. The Williams family didn't have very much cash , so they couldn't buy any new tennis balls. Instead they played with old balls they found. The two sisters couldn't afford expensive tennis lessons at a ritzy country club either - so their dad, Richard, bought a book on tennis and taught them himself. The two sisters smashed balls on beat-up, old tennis courts for up to six hours a day while their dad, who had never played much tennis before, read instructions from his book.
