August 21, 2003 Tennis star Leander Paes has demonstrated an incredibly large heart when playing for India in numerous Davis Cup encounters.
Now, the effervescent 30-year-old Kolkata-based champion is showing the same spirit and looks determined to overcome his ailment at the Anderson Cancer Center in Orlando (US) where he has been hospitalised with a brain lesion.

And now, when nothing seems to be going right for Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, that same passion seems to have been transferred into going for each other's jugular. In the whodunit fast turning into a why-he-dunit, there is one more twist the role of the fathers, who ironically had brought them together the last time the duo had a problem. Reacting to Leander's comments to a TV channel confirming that he would not be playing with Mahesh this year, with the possible exception of the Davis Cup and Olympics, Mahesh said that the whole thing had just got out of hand. He blamed the two fathers Dr Vece Paes and C G K Bhupathi and Leander for the escalation of what is fast turning into a real messy affair, with allegations and counter-allegations. Talking to

A death Paes was not told about
AGENCIES CALCUTTA, JULY 5: Leander's pet dog Cuddles died at his Calcutta residence on Friday night. Dr Vece Paes, Leander's father, said he was wondering whether it was a bad omen. He became a little apprehensive whether the Indian pair would be able to win the title and did not disclose the sad news to Leander. Paes (sr) was eagerly awaiting Leander's phone call from Wimbledon. ``He had promised to call us after the match. We are trying to keep the phone free for him to reach us,'' last night. ``We have not yet told him about Cuddles' death as he was very fond of the dog which was staying with us for the last 14 years. The news would have upset him. I have to break the unpleasant news to him. I'm afraid he will be very disappointed.'' Vece Paes, a former hockey Olympian, was disappointed that Doordarshan did not telecast the entire match live depriving Indian tennis fans from watching the historic moment. In Bangalore, Mahesh's mother Meera was following the game on the Internet while her friends were alsokeeping her regularly informed. She too was expecting a call from Mahesh and her husband, who was also in Wimbledon.

Your browser does not support JavaScript News Resource Centre 2003 Sep 30 - Paes speaks of Wimbledon "blackout" Leander Paes has revealed that he first noticed the symptoms of a parasitic brain infection at the Wimbledon Championships in 2003. While playing a mixed doubles quarter-finals match with Martina Navratilova he blacked out. Leander said: "I actually came up to hit a smash and when I landed on the ground, something must have shaken inside my brain because I lost all sight. I lost all control of my balance and I was falling down. "I caught Martina and I tried to hold her for stability. That was the first time that had occurred." This didn't stop the pair winning the Wimbledon mixed doubles title. And it was a month after the tournament in August that Leander was admitted to hospital where he has been recouperating ever since. Initially Leander wasn't expected back in action before the end of the year, but the Indian tennis star is keen to get back out on the court. Leander added: "I am feeling better and hope to come back to the court within two to three weeks." All the best Leander!!

A special, winning partnership
The success and strength of the Leander Paes-Mahesh Bhupathi team, the greatest Indian doubles pair, springs from their belief in each other. NARESH KUMAR IT was a historic occasion for Indian tennis when Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the men's doubles title at the French Open championships. The four Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open - are ack nowledged as summits of the tennis world and winning a title in any one of them brings international acclaim and recognition. Paes' and Bhupathi's feat - they are the first Indian pair to win a Grand Slam title - is a matter of great pride and joy. So often in the past year have Paes and Bhupathi failed narrowly to win a Grand Slam doubles title that one was beginning to despair and wonder if they would ever pull it off. In 1998, which was a big year for them, they were in the semi-finals of three Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open - and won a record eight events on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tour. This year, at the Australian Open, they were a step closer to the summit but fell at th e last hurdle, losing narrowly to the strong combination of Patrick Rafter and Jonas Bjorkman in the final. During the ATP tournament in Chennai in April, there was talk of a possible split between Paes and Bhupathi. Happily the boys stayed together, won the title in Chennai and have now won their first Grand Slam men's doubles title.

Andre Agassi stormed to a landmark fourth Australian Open crown, thrashing Rainer Schuettler to become the oldest Grand Slam champion for 31 years.
The 32-year-old's 6-2 6-2 6-1 victory equalled the most one-sided in the event's 98-year history and gives him an eighth grand slam title.
Not since John Hawkes ran roughshod over Jim Willard in 1926 has a men's final lasted just 23 games and none have comprised fewer.
Agassi has not lost at Melbourne Park since a fourth round defeat in 1999, a wrist injury caused him to miss last year, and his four Australian crowns are a record for an overseas player.
The hard courts suit his game perfectly and he ripped past Schuettler in just 76 minutes. The German taekwondo expert simply could not withstand the battering he received from Agassi.
Agassi, one of only five men to have won all four grand slam titles at least once, tore into Schuettler from the start, punching groundstrokes into the corners of centre court.

MUMBAI: Putting to rest speculation about his possible return to competitive tennis at the Tata Open to be held in Chennai from January 5, Indian tennis ace Leander Paes on Tuesday said he would not return to the court before the Australian Open. Leander was supposed to partner Mahesh Bhupathi in the doubles event of the Tata Open but has now postponed his return so as to have more time to recover from the brain cyst which he suffered in July last.

MUMBAI: Leander Paes pulling out of the Tata Open in Chennai and not playing doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi is certainly not great news for tennis fans in Chennai. But it could just be a blessing in disguise for young Indian players aspiring to step into Leander’s shoes as the singles wild card reserved for India’s hero of many a thrilling Davis Cup battle, may well go to young Indian hopefuls. ‘‘Of the three wild cards Prakash and Leander were getting two. Now that Leander is not playing we will decide on the players hand them out to on January 2. But 99 per cent we will give them to Indian players. What better way to encourage local talent?’’ said Ravi Krishnan, managing director IMG-TWI, South Asia.

TENNIS MASTERS CUP CONTENDERS
Tennis Masters Cup Doubles The first doubles teams to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup Houston are Bob and Mike Bryan, Mark Knowles-Daniel Nestor, US Open champions Jonas Bjorkman-Todd Woodbridge (pictured) and Mahesh Bhupathi-Max Mirnyi. The Bryans failed to win their second Grand Slam title of the year when they were beaten by veterans Bjorkman-Woodbridge in the US Open final.
Bjorkman and Woodbridge have become the first team to win Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year since Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996. The unstoppable Woodbridge has now 77 career doubles titles one short of equaling the record 78 titles held by Tom Okker. A total of eight teams will qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston. This is the first time since 1985 that the singles and doubles year-end championships will be held at the same venue.
