Transcribed Interview THE MODERATOR: First question, please. Q. Martina , I wanted to ask you specifically about mixed doubles going forward. Have you talked to Leander ? Do you think you'll be playing next year? MARTINA NAVRATILOVA: Planning on playing in Australia . Yeah, that's the plan. He's out of the hospital. It will be a while before he's to full strength, but definitely hoping to play in the Australian Open Q. How much do these losses hurt, when you have an opportunity like that? MARTINA NAVRATILOVA: Well, it was a great opportunity. We have to be thankful that we got there. We've been working all year to get better and better. It's hard to be disappointed with getting to the finals of the US Open I think we're both disappointed we didn't play better tennis. They played well. Give them all the credit in the world. They played well. But we didn't create anything either. We could have played better. We should have played better. For me, I think, you know, I felt like a little kid, "Hey, I'm in a

Czech-born American tennis player. She first visited the USA in 1973, defected in 1975, and became an American citizen in 1981. When she retired from singles in 1994 she had won 167 singles titles including a record nine at Wimbledon. Her victory in the 1995 Wimbledon mixed doubles extended her total of Wimbledon titles to 19, one short of Billie Jean King's record. In 1978 she began a relationship with Rita Mae Brown (1944 - ), an American activist and writer, but the publicity made her resign as head of the Women's Tennis Association. She later had an affair with Judy Nelson and gained admiration by routinely climbing into the crowd at tennis matches to snog her lover after winning games. She stepped up her campaigning for lesbian and gay rights and spoke at the march on Washington DC in April 1993. She also filed a law suit against the enactment of the homophobic Amendment 2 in Colorado which bans legal protection for lesbians and gays in the fields of housing and employment. In 1994 she announced her retirement from singles tennis.

    By Larry Schwartz

    Special to ESPN.com
She came to the United States to play tennis and became the queen of Burger King. Two decades later, she left tennis as the queen of the game. Martina Navratilova won 56 Grand Slam championships, second only to Margaret Court. It wasn't easy for Martina Navratilova, born a Czechoslovakian but with the heart of an American. It was hard shaping up and winning a record nine Wimbledons, including six consecutively on the hallowed grass. It was even more difficult winning over the fans. Her public perception advanced from animosity to acceptance to adulation. "How gratifying it must have been for her," Frank Deford wrote. "To have achieved so much, triumphed so magnificently, yet always to have been the other, the odd one, alone: lefthander in a righthanded universe, gay in a straight world; defector, immigrant; the (last?) gallant volleyer among all those duplicate baseline bytes. "When she came into the game, she was the European among Americans; she leaves as the American among Europeans and the only grown-up left in the tennis crib. Can't she ever get it right?"

  • Greatest Champions: Martina Navratilova
    Mike Donovan
It is a title she well deserves because you can almost be overwhelmed by what she has achieved. The lady has to have the biggest trophy display cabinet among players. And she entered a fourth decade at the 2003 Championships when she become the oldest ever Grand Slam champion at 46 years 261 days after winning the Mixed Doubles title with Leander Paes. Earlier in the year she become the first player in Open era to win every Slam event available when she won the 2003 Australian Open Mixed Doubles title also with Leander Paes (ie. Ladies' Singles, Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles in all four Grand Slam events). In total she has won 58 Grand Slam titles in all. Navratilova's victory at the 2003 Championships alongside Paes also meant that she equalled Billie Jean King's record number of 20 Wimbledon titles.
