BERLIN - U.S. tennis great Martina Navratilova criticized her adopted homeland in a German newspaper on Wednesday, saying money is the only thing that matters there. Navratilova, a Czech-born American who won 18 grand slam singles titles when she dominated women's tennis in the late 1970s and 1980s, also wrote in an article for Die Zeit weekly that she believed free speech was being suppressed in the United States. "The most absurd part of my escape from the unjust system is that I have exchanged one system that suppresses free opinion for another," said Navratilova, 45, who fled Czechoslovakia at the age of 18 to go to the United States. The nine-time women's Wimbledon champion, who still plays in some doubles tournaments and last week played in a singles tournament at the Eastbourne International Championships in England, singled out President Bush's Republican Party for unusually harsh criticism. "The Republicans in the United States manipulate public opinion and sweep any controversial issues under the table," Navratilova said.

Tennis: Martina Navratilova criticizes Richard Williams
Wednesday, April 11, 2001 Associated Press Martina Navratilova was never one to mince words when she was the most dominant women's tennis player from the mid-1970s through the mid-'90s. Now that she's quit playing singles but has resumed doubles play, Navratilova is ... still outspoken. Preparing for doubles in this week's Bausch and Lomb Championships, Navratilova met with the media on Tuesday. She was reserved in most of her comments until asked about the behavior of Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams, who are currently ranked No. 2 and No. 6, respectively.

Her first Grand Slam win was mixed doubles at the 1974 French Championship (with Ivan Molina, Colombia). By winning the Australian Open mixed doubles title with Leander Paes in 2003, Navratilova completed a sweep of all 12 Grand Slam titles, and, at the age of 46, also became the oldest player ever to win a major tournament. She was defeated by Conchita Martinez in the final of her last Wimbledon as a singles player in 1994. She became a tennis coach in February 1997, and made her debut as captain of the defending champion US Fed Cup team, replacing Billie Jean King. makeButton("REFERENCE.HOME","R1")

Yet dabbling in doublesshe won the Wimbledon mixed in 1995 with Jonathan StarkMarvelous Martina retired from singles at the 1994 year-end WTA Championships at Madison Square Garden in an opening-round defeat by Gabriela Sabatini, 6-4, 6-2. Thousands cheered and wept saying goodbye and thanks for the memories. She had done so much in New York, winning that prime championship eight times in singles (five times runner-up), 10 times in doubles, plus four singles and 11 doubles titles across the East River at the U.S. Open.
Nobody, ever, has had such a glittering trove of numbers. As a pro since 1973, she played the most singles tournaments (380) and matches (1,650), and won the most titles (167) and matches (1,438) with a won-lost mark of 1,438-212. She won more prize money, $20,344,061, than all but Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras.

Navratilova, Martina (b. 1956) The hallmarks of Martina Navratilova's tennis game are strength and speed. Her tennis career and her personality are also characterized by an emotional openness and an honesty that have won the respect of her friends and opponents both on and off the court. Navratilova was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia on October 18, 1956. Her parents divorced when she was three years old. Her mother, a ski instructor, married Mirek Navratil when she was six. He was a loving and supportive stepfather, who was her first tennis coach. Sponsor Message.
A shy, awkward teenager, she nonetheless managed to win championships in her native Czechoslovakia. More remarkably, in search of personal freedom and a chance to advance as a professional tennis player, she managed to defect from her native country, alone, in the middle of the night. "I've always had this outrage against being told how to live, what to say, how to act, what to do, when to do it," Navratilova told

When Martina Navratilova retired from singles in 1994 she had won 167 singles titles including a record nine at Wimbledon. Her victory in the 1995 Wimbledon mixed doubles extended her total of Wimbledon titles to 19, one short of Billie Jean King's record.
In 1978 she began a relationship with Rita Mae Brown (1944 - ), an American activist and writer, but the publicity made her resign as head of the Women's Tennis Association.
She later had an affair with Judy Nelson and gained admiration by routinely climbing into the crowd at tennis matches to snog her lover after winning games.
She stepped up her campaigning for lesbian and gay rights and spoke at the march on Washington DC in April 1993. She also filed a law suit against the enactment of the homophobic Amendment 2 in Colorado which bans legal protection for lesbians and gays in the fields of housing and employment.
Shortly after her 1994 retirement from singles, Adam Sweeting, The Guardian television critic said in an BBC tribute to Martina:
Talking openly about her lesbianism has cost her lucrative sponsorships, but it has made her a beacon of courageous independence, visible far beyond the money-mad treadmill of world tennis. Snag is, she's probably too extraordinary to be a role model.
