Althea Gibson
Few tennis players have had to overcome more obstacles to become champions than Althea Gibson, the first African American to win at Forest Hills and Wimbledon. During her twenty-three year career, she won fifty-six major singles and doubles championships. Born August 25, 1927 in South Carolina, Althea grew up in New York City's Harlem. Though her family was poor, her tennis ability caught the attention of Dr. Robert W. Johnson, a Lynchburg, Virginia, physician who was active in the black tennis community. Through Dr. Johnson's sponsorship, she was able to get better instruction and competition, as well as contacts with the USLTA that moved her into the mainstream tennis circuit. She first entered the U.S. Open in 1950, the first person of color to compete in that tournament. In 1956, she won the singles title and was a member of the winning doubles team at the French Open. She then went on to capture the Wimbledon doubles title alongside Englishwoman Angela Buxton. After a final-round loss to Darlene Hard at the U.S. Open in the same year, Gibson returned in 1957 to win the singles title, finally reigning in her own country. In addition to her many other honors, Gibson in 1991 became the first woman to receive the NCAA's highest honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Award.

Annotation

Follows the life of the first black woman to win the tennis competition at Wimbledon.
From The Critics
School Library Journal

Gr 7-12 While Gibson's life was successful in the tennis arena, she was not as triumphant in other aspects of her life. Biracree provides a chronology of her trials, accomplishments, and failures. An introduction by the president of Radcliffe College is lively and motivational. The biography of the first black woman of tennis does not go beyond 1975, and does not mention her induction into the Hall Of Fame. It also does not tell of her doubles' achievements. A narrative style with quotes from Gibson's journal, black-and-white photographs of good quality, along with short chapters provide easy reading. Readers interested in famous women, black Amercians, tennis, and/or sports figures will find the book informative. Janice C. " TENNIS - Althea Gibson Background Information: Ms. Althea Gibson is known to all as a magnificent athlete. Even though she worked hard to obtain the title, she knew it was necessary for her to be an exceptional tennis player when she first began playing. In 1966, Ms. Gibson was the first black woman to win at Wimbleton. She is and has been named as one of America's most outstanding athletes. She was the top-ranked woman tennis player in the country in 1957 and 1958, and the first black to achieve this honor. Althea Gibson is the first black woman to play international tennis. Born in 1927 in South Carolina, she grew up in Harlem and began playing tennis at an early age. Early in 1981, Leslie Allen became the first black woman since Althea Gibson to capture a major tennis tournament by winning the Avon tennis tournament in Detroit. Problem: Before people can play tennis, someone must plan the construction of a tennis court. Here is a drawing of a tennis court with the measurements indicated in feet. How many cubic feet of asphalt would you order to make a tennis court 3 inches thick? How many cubic yards would be ordered? If you were to construct this court with an apron 10 feet wide, how many cubic yards of asphalt would you order to do the whole job?

WASHINGTON, Sept 29 (AFP) - Tributes poured in Monday honoring African-American tennis legend Althea Gibson, who died at the age of 76. ClariNews Local, technical, or sports news your customers really care about - on your front page two hours from now! The White House lauded Gibson, who broke the color barrier in her sport, as a champion of "remarkable spirit, determination, and skill." "Althea Gibson rose above segregation and discrimination to become a world-class tennis player," the White House said in a statement. "In breaking the racial barrier in championship tennis, she furthered America's progress in recognizing individuals for their character and abilities, not their skin color." Gibson was the first black athlete to compete in the US Open championship in 1950 and at Wimbledon in 1951. Gibson went on to win the French Open in 1956 and back-to-back US and Wimbledon titles in 1957 and 1958. After her first Wimbledon victory, she was given a ticker-tape parade in New York City. "She simply changed the landscape of tennis," said Alan Schwartz, president of the United States Tennis Association.

EAST ORANGE, New Jersey, Sept 28 (AFP) - Tennis champion Althea Gibson, the first black to win Wimbledon and the US Championships, died Sunday. She was 76. News Vantage Gibson had been in poor health for years and passed away at East Orange General Hospital, according to Darryl Jeffries, a spokesman for the city of East Orange. Fran Clayton Gray, chief executive officer of the Althea Gibson Foundation, said Gibson suffered a heart attack three months ago that kept her bedridden. She entered the hospital two days ago with bladder and kidney infections and died from respiratory arrest. A big hitter with an awesome serve, Gibson became the first black person to play at the US Championships in 1950 and Wimbledon a year later. She won the French Championship in 1956, earned back-to-back titles at Wimbledon and the US Open in 1957-58 and added three doubles crowns at Wimbledon from 1956-58. Gibson fought through the color line when segregation was the rule, paving the way for other black champions, like the late Arthur Ashe and Venus and Serena Williams.

From Althea Gibson to Venus Williams
by Andrea Lewis

I was born in 1957, the year that Althea Gibson became the first black woman to win Wimbledon. Back then, Gibson's name and accomplishments were as recognized in the black community as Michael Jordan's are now.
It's taken more than four decades for another African-American woman to win the championship at the world's most respected tennis tournament. In fact, there are currently two black female champions at Wimbledon: Venus Williams and Serena Williams. Venus won the single's title and teamed up with sister Serena to win the doubles crown the first time sisters have ever accomplished the feat.
Yet with all of the joy surrounding the Williams' triumph, it's sad to note that Althea Gibson has been reduced to little more than a footnote in sports history.
"The first thing I thought when Venus won was, ‘Althea would have loved to be here today.’ It would have been great," tennis legend Billie Jean King told the Associated Press.
One would almost assume from those words that Gibson died long ago. In fact, Gibson is 72 years old and lives in obscurity somewhere in East Orange, N.J. The Associated Press reports that "efforts to reach (Gibson) for comment were unsuccessful."
