Chris Evert Facts in Brief-
Birth Chris Evert was born on December 21, 1954 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Family Chris' father is James Evert. She has 2 sisters and one brother which are all younger than her.
Death She is still living a very healthy life at the age of 46.
Awards In 1976 she won the "Sportswomen of the Year" which was the first time ever. In 1976 she also was chosen female Rookie of the Year in World Team Tennis (WTT). Last year she was chosen as one of ESPN's "50 Greatest Athletes of the Century.
  • Why I Selected Chris Evert?
I chose Chris Evert because I love sports and I knew she was a very good tennis player. She was also my mom's favorite tennis player and she had said how cool she was about everything she said.
Chris Evert was introduced to tennis when she was just six years old. Her father, James, was a tennis teaching pro and was the manager of a tennis club in Fort Lauderdale. Not long after this she was playing tennis twenty hours a week. She wasn't as athletic or didn't have a lot of natural talent but her father helped her gain talent and was very influential with her growth in the game.
At the age of 16 in 1970, Chris defeated Margaret Court, another great tennis player at the time. In 1970 Chris won an amazing 46 consecutive matches before losing to Billie Jean King. In 1971 she kept on getting better and she just kept winning more tournaments. She was doing all of this as an amateur so she couldn't win any money.

    Evert: grit, grace and glamour
    By Larry Schwartz

    Special to ESPN.com
Chris Evert was such a sweet 16 when she burst onto the national scene. With ponytail flying on the grass courts of Forest Hills, N.Y., this unseeded high school girl from Florida made three gripping comebacks against established women pros including once staving off six match points. While she didn't win the 1971 U.S. Open, she earned a more valuable prize that fortnight. Chris Evert raised the champion's plate at Wimbledon three times, and she won 15 other Grand Slam events, too. She grabbed America's heart. She did it with two hands, the same way she hit her backhand. And she held on for most of two decades, in which time she went from teen angel to ice maiden to revered legend. Part of Evert's charm was her tenaciousness she never conceded a point. Part of it was that two-handed backhand that spawned a craze among young girls for years to come. Part of it was and there's no getting around it she was feminine in a time when the stereotype of the woman tennis player was more masculine. It was this blend of grit, grace and glamour that stole our hearts. And while the grace and glamour were nice to the eye, it was the grit that made her a champion.

Nicknamed "Little Miss Icicle" for her imperturbable demeanor, Evert lacked the flair of Billie Jean King or Martina Navratilova, but she was a very steady, consistent baseline player who won 157 tournaments, second only to Navratilova, and $8,896,195, third all-time, in just under 18 years as a professional. The daughter of tennis pro Jimmie Evert, who was ranked 11th in the U. S. in 1943, she turned professional on her eighteenth birthday in 1972 after having passed up $50,000 in winnings that year to retain her amateur status. Evert won her first major titles, the Wimbledon and French Open singles, in 1974. She also won at Wimbledon in 1976 and 1981 and was a finalist on five other occasions. Evert tied the record of Molla Mallory and Helen Jacobs by winning the U. S. Open four years in a row, from 1975 through 1978, and she won that title again in 1980 and 1982. She was a finalist at the French Open ten years in a row, from 1973 through 1982, and won the championship in 1974, 1975, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, and 1986. With her Australian Open titles in 1982 and 1984, Evert had a total of 18 grand slim singles championships, third behind Margaret Smith Court and Helen Wills Moody.

Chris Evert Chris Evert is a famous American tennis player. She was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1954. For almost as long as Evert could remember, her one mission in life was to become the best woman tennis player in the world. But to achieve her goal, Evert knew she had to win the best known tennis tournament in the world, which was the Wimbledon championship. Chris knew she had to work hard to win the championship. But that was O.K. because she was an extremely hard worker. Her father was her tennis coach and taught her beginning at the age of six. She won her first tennis match when she was eight years old. By the time Chris was twelve, she was second best in the country in her age group. She became professional when she was eighteen. Chris won a total of 157 tournaments! And a total of 1,000 singles matches, which earned her a place in the International Tennis Hall of Fame Some people called Chris Evert the "Ice Dolly" or "the ball machine" because she was very self-disciplined and never seemed to loose her temper. But once, when she was playing Lesley Hunt in 1974 in Wimbledon, Chris started to show her emotions. As darkness began to fall on the stadium, Lesley increased her attack. Chris began to lose her cool. "I can't see, I can't see!" she shouted to the officials desperately. Lesley had her chance of winning but Evert kept on struggling and scrambling for the ball. Eventually Chris won. Chris Evert was important because she believed in herself. She wanted to be an outstanding woman tennis player and she was. Chris attracted large audiences and lots of prize money to women's tennis. After she retired she started Chris Evert Charities to help neglected children and women in distress.
