Michael Chang again in the public spotlight By Liang Yu, Shanghai Star. 2000-10-24 MICHAEL Chang once again found himself in the Shanghai limelight, but obviously he was not as well poised for this off-court occasion. After a hard-won battle against Nicolas Massu from Chile in the quarterfinal of the Heineken Open Shanghai on Friday, Chang was invited to exhibit his skills at making hand-pulled noodles, a promotional activity organized by one of the tournament's sponsors. Following the chef's example, the 1998 Shanghai Open champion tried drawing out the dough by hand. Several times, he almost made it, but the noodles he made unsurprisingly turned into shapeless imitations. Expecting his 13th Asian title, the 28-year-old American-born-Chinese came to the tournament in the hope of securing his position in the hearts of local fans, and the audience response was good news for him. Battling Israel's Harel Levy, his opening match could have turned out a nightmare without the ardent audience. "The cheering crowds gave me a lot of support. That's why I like playing in Asia, especially in China, because it is more fun," Michael said at a post-match conference.

Marlboro Man
Michael Chang's smoky image abroad
by Bill Wong Over the past 10 years, Michael Chang has been the rarest of species: a Chinese American athlete of world renown, consistently ranked among the top 10 men's tennis professionals. His profile in the United States, while considerable, pales in comparison to his fame in Hong Kong, whose population is overwhelmingly ethnic Chinese. You don't have to show your ethnic card to admire Chang, at least in many aspects of his public persona. He is a fierce and courageous competitor. Although relatively undersized compared with other tennis professionals, he maximizes his skills. Off the court, he's an exemplar, modest, humble, not force-feeding his devout Christianity. He is enough of a crossover commodity that he endorses a number of products to a mainstream American audience. In Hong Kong, he is said to contribute handsomely to charities that benefit young people and he has been used to promote healthful living as well as in anti-youth-suicide campaigns. So why are Serena Chen and Dr. Judith Mackay giving Chang such a bad time?
