He had been on the Tour for little more than a year when, at age 17, he stunned the tennis world by upsetting all-time greats like Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg on the way to his first Grand Slam titlethe 1989 French Open. His name was entered into the history books as the youngest player ever to win a Grand Slam event! Now, in his 10 years as a pro, he has reached the finals of three of the four Grand Slams (the Australian, the French, and the U.S. Open). He has captured over 30 tournament titles, earning more than $14 million in prize money. For seven years, he's been ranked as one of the top ten players in the world. On the tennis circuit his persistence and determination are nearly legendary. As Edberg has said, "Chang never gives up." Referring to his intensity and his amazing ability to get to "impossible" shots, one sportwriter called Michael "the most exciting player since Jimmy Connors." Another concluded, "Jim Courier speaks for all the pros when he says, 'You have to play your best tennis to beat him.'" One of the world's best players, Chang is committed to going out and giving his best every time he steps onto the court. And off the court, he goes out of his way to reach out to his fans and have a positive impact on their lives. He makes time to sign autographs and answers their questions; he participates in a variety of special charities, tennis clinics, and youth-oriented programs. He talks to children, reminding them to work hard in school.

Michael Chang Michael Chang charged onto the international tennis scene and shocked the world by upsetting Ivan Lendl and Stefan Egberg and becoming the youngest player in history to win a Grand Slam event. After that French Open win, he publicly thanked his savior, Jesus Christ. "Without Him, I'm nothing," he said. Boos and cheers followed. Criticism flowed freely. Veteran players and observers of the professional tennis tour laughed in anticipation of when Chang would fall.
None of it troubled Chang, who continues to stay focused on Christ and among the top tennis players in the world. Says Chang of his regular public praise of Christ: "I've just received so much joy, so much love, and so many blessings from the Lord. When something good happens to you, you want to share it with people!"
At just 5-feet-9, 150 pounds, the 1992 Olympian is small for his success. He says his keys to victory are intense physical and spiritual workouts. The spiritual is as important to tennis as the physical, and it is more important in life overall.
"I do a Bible study first thing in the morning and also at night," Chang says. "Throughout the day, I'll pray — whenever — because the Lord is always there. He teaches me a lot through circumstances in my life, whether it's a tennis match or other things that are going on. Trying to stay close to the Lord can be very difficult by yourself, so you ask the Lord to help you. You ask Him to be your first love and your first priority. Life will have its ups and downs, but regardless of what's happening in our lives, if we're focusing on Him, we'll have the joy that He gives us."

Flushing Meadows, New York, NY September 12, 1992 S. EDBERG/M. Chang INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL CHANG Q. How do you feel?
MICHAEL CHANG: Who asked? I feel good. Q. Pardon me? MICHAEL CHANG: I feel good. Q. You were cramping or dehydrated or anything serious? MICHAEL CHANG: No. Q. You must be disappointed, but do you take pride in the kind of effort that you put out there and how much you made Edberg work for this today? MICHAEL CHANG: Well, I kind of don't look at it as, you know, just giving him a really good workout. I mean, I went out there and I did my best. I wanted to come out on top, obviously. You know, I think that over all, it was kind of a seesaw match. I have had I had a few break opportunities; wasn't able to convert. He was serving for the set in one of the previous sets and couldn't really put it away, and you know, very much a seesaw match. I think it was very close over all. I think in the end, he was able to just to really pull out, you know, the tough shots, and you know, just play the bigger points a little bit better than I did at the end. Q. Last 11 service points he won all 11. Was there something fatigue or something, he was doing different in the latter stage of the fifth set?

Other than that nuance, Michael had a very happy childhood. He ate all his vegetables because he wanted to be as strong as Popeye, and he drank all of his milk because of "those athletes in the commercials." His favorite toys included Tonka trucks and teddy bears, many of which he still keeps in his attic today. Also, Michael would always ask his barber to give him a haircut like Superman. After relocating from the NJ/NY area to St Paul MN, Michael and his older brother Carl found themselves in a friendly neighborhood. Michael met lots of friends and would often tag along with them to a pond that they nicknamed "Secret Pond" to hunt for tadpoles. It was also in Minnesota that Carl, 9, taught Michael, 6, the barebones of tennis by teaching him how to play table tennis (ping pong). In addition to his maturity, another characteristic that was noticeable early on was Michael's competitiveness. After losing a match to his father at age 8, he got so upset that he broke his racquet (the only time that he's ever done it). Later, he learned to make his competitiveness work for him. In the 2nd grade, Michael lost a spelling bee by spelling the word "close" instead of "clothes," so he went home and wrote the word "clothes" 300 times to make sure he wouldn't forget it. Michael also enjoyed competing for fun against Carl, and not just in tennis. They would have frequent pillow fights, fishing contests, and food fests to see who could eat more of their mom's homemade Chinese dumplings.

An interview with: MICHAEL CHANG
MODERATOR: Questions for Michael. Q. Give us a sense of how you feel after the first-round match. Are you happy with how you played? Where is your game as of now? MICHAEL CHANG: I think it's always important to get the first one under the belt. Today it wasn't an easy match. Harel has been playing some good tennis this summer. It's kind of weird. I had a feeling, when I saw I was going to play a qualifier, I thought I was going to play him for some strange reason. I lost to him last year in a challenger. I had a little bit of an idea of how he played. Tonight was a tough match. I'm pretty pleased with the way things went. Q. Where do you think your game sort of stands right now this summer? MICHAEL CHANG: I think tonight got off to a good start. You know, the summer has been a little bit mixed for me. I had a really good win in LA. It was great to be able to get back on the winning side. I feel like things are coming along, heading in the right direction. Yeah, tonight was definitely a good stepping stone. Q. The other day Pete talked about when he was young, he was consumed with tennis. He used the word "consumed." He was consumed with being No. 1, with Grand Slams. While he still wants to win, that consumption level is down. Would you classify where you are now, are you still as consumed with the game as you were when you were younger? Is that different? If so, how is that different?

Flushing Meadows, New York September 4, 1997 M. CHANG/M. Rios An interview with: MICHAEL CHANG
MICHAEL CHANG: Appreciate your patience. Q. Mike, are you cramping? MICHAEL CHANG: No. I'm avoiding it. You know, I don't want to sit for too long. You know, I don't want to stiffen up. I just don't want to be in a situation. I know if I start cramping, I'm going to be here for another two hours walking it off. Best not to even get it started. Q. Is it more cautionary? MICHAEL CHANG: More cautionary. Q. You don't feel any cramps at all? MICHAEL CHANG: No. Just from my experience, it's been the best thing. Q. Michael, in your career, have you ever had two tighter or more dramatic back-to-back matches than you have tonight and against Pioline? MICHAEL CHANG: Actually, I have. A few years ago, actually at the Open, I played a five-setter with Wayne Ferreira and a five-setter against MaliVai Washington, which both matches were tough. I think it's always tough to compare matches, but today was definitely a fight. Q. It's been an hour since the match. What have you been doing during that time?
