Michael's Testimony Michael's testimony for Jesus Christ both on and off the court is quite evident. "I thank the Lord Jesus Christ," he proclaimed in 1989 after becoming the youngest male to ever win the French Open, "because without Him, I am nothing." Whether win or lose, he readily gives glory to the Lord, for it is the Lord who gave Michael the talent to play tennis. In this section, Michael responds to the reader’s questions and comments about Christianity. Michael Tract:

by Christin Ditchfield from the May 1997 issue of Sharing the Victory, Fellowship of Christian Athletes How did you become a Christian? I became a Christian in 1988. At 15 years of age, I was doing a lot of searching. I think at that particular age, at least for me, you’re wondering about things like the meaning of life and you’re really trying to find yourself. I just had a lot of questions. My grandparents had given me a Bible and they wanted me to read it everyday. On this one particular evening I didn’t have anything else to do so I decided to take a good look at my Bible and see what it had to say. I looked at the index in the back and found that it covered all these different subjects. So I looked up subjects like friendship and love and found the Bible to be very true, very pure, in a way in which I wanted to live my life. From then on I began reading about the Lord’s life and His love for all people. Eventually, I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior.

Michael Chang:
The best parents are "selfless," says the tennis star. "My parents gave everything to us."
This week: Chang plays in the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Orlando, Fla., defending his No. 1 seed. ichael Chang is best known for wielding a mean tennis racket, but the superstar often puts it down for a fishing rod and time with his family. This day, Chang relaxes at a tiny fishing lake in Orange, Calif., with his brother, Carl. They are inseparable. "When we were growing up, family was everything," Michael, 26, explains as Carl, 30, casts a line. For a long time, his father, a chemist, fiercely managed Michael's career. In 1991, Carl took over. At first, as Michael sank in the rankings, some dismissed Carl as just a "chaperon." But the brothers, devout Christians, prayed together and stuck together. Now No. 10 in the world, Michael earned $12 million in 1997.

ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES Michael Chang: Time to Retire from Tennis? hirteen years ago Michael Chang was lionized as the youngest man ever to win the French Open and the first American male to win in 36 years. This year he quietly exited Roland Garros after blowing a two-set-to-love lead in a first-round match with an obscure Frenchman ranked 224th.
Played Out?
Chang himself has ceased being a marquee name except in cities like Hong Kong, Beijing and Taipei. His ATP ranking has slipped to 116th from 73rd at the end of 2001. For the first five months of 2002 his prize money totaled a paltry $53,835 compared with $483,000 in 2000, $1.2 million in 1997 and a high of $2 million in 1995. Michael Chang now spends half his time competing in Challenger series tournaments offering piddling purses. His most recent win was $7,200 at an April tournament in Calabasas and that was one of his biggest wins of the year. Another Challenger event in Tarzana a week later netted him $520.
Not that Chang needs the prize money to keep himself in tennis balls. His winnings since turning pro at the age of 15 total $18.9 million. And that's not counting an estimated $50 million in endorsements.

By Kristin Green Morse, SI.com. Chang was first American man to win the French in 34 years. Bob Martin/Allsport It's hard to believe it has been nearly 15 years since Chinese army tanks rolled through a student protest in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The photograph of the lone man standing defiantly as military tanks crept toward him is ingrained on our collective memories. As the events progressed in China, one 17-year-old Chinese-American kid from Southern California was playing tennis in Paris and doing his best to give hope even just a little to Chinese citizens throughout the world. The events in Beijing weighed heavily upon Michael Chang and his parents, Joe and Betty . After a day of tennis at the French Open they would return to their hotel and watch events unfold in China on CNN. "My heart was breaking," says Chang, 32. "I wanted to put a smile upon Chinese faces. Anything to take their minds off what was happening, was a good thing." Tanks entered Tiananmen Square on Saturday, June 3, 1989. Two days later, 15th-seeded Chang took on top-seeded

Monica Seles and Michael Chang, two of the top name players in pro tennis, left the premises Monday in the Evert Cup/Newsweek Champions Cup combined events. There was little similarity in their departures.
Seles, ranked No. 3 in the world and seeded No. 3 here, got beat on a bad day, losing to Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia, 6-2, 6-4.
"My mind wasn't there," said Seles, who made 27 unforced errors to Nagyova's 16 and, basically, just didn't show up for the match. It happens, and it happened to Seles on Monday.
Chang, on the other hand, went quietly, something of a trend of late and something that the former Michael Chang, the one that was ranked No. 2 in the world until mid-1997, never let happen.

Michael, did you just consciously one day sit down and think, gosh, I need a real weapon, I need to be bigger; how am I going to do, I am going to improve my serve, I am going to get a longer racket, and approach it that way, or did it just happen, just sort of evolve? Q. How many long rackets have you tested before the one you are using today?
MICHAEL CHANG: Quite a few. I am not going to tell you how many. Q. 10? 100? MICHAEL CHANG: Not 100. I'd say more probably it depends, I think maybe somewhere between - around 15, I would say, something like that. I mean, I was fiddling around with you can't just make a racket longer and expect it to do whatever you want it to do the first time you tried it. So, you have to kind of get it down to where I can hit the shots that I need to hit. Geting in situations in tiebreakers, and stuff, you don't have too well, what is this racket going to do, so, yeah. Q. Is yours customized?

Who is Michael Chang? He was the first Asian tennis player to hit the top 10 world rankings. He was the youngest male ever to win a Grand Slam title the 1989 French Open at 17 years and 3 months, and the first American to lift the trophy since Tony Trabert in 1955. He concluded his legendary career on Tues., Aug. 26, 2003 at the U.S. Open, where he played an astonishing 17 consecutive times. So why doesn't he get more media coverage? Stumped me there. Hopefully this tribute site has changed that. The Man MC includes tons of info gathered from sources worldwide that, until now, have remained trivia to many fans. Although work on this site has stopped, you can still post reports on our message board or sign our guestbook YKC Special recognition goes out to the Hong Kong SAR Dept. of Education, which specially selected this Web site for use in their secondary school compulsory English curriculum.

Michael Chang loses final match as a pro
By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer, 8/27/2003 NEW YORK More than anything, Michael Chang wanted to have fun during his farewell tour, regardless of results. In his final match before retirement, he had a blast. And he lost. ADVERTISEMENT Chang played in 17 straight U.S. Opens, so it was fitting the former French Open champion said goodbye here, on center court at Arthur Ashe Stadium before several thousand fans. The 31-year-old Chang, energetic as ever, was overpowered by 15th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 in an exciting first-round match that saw Chang rally to win the third set. He pumped both fists, he hollered "Yes!" when Gonzalez double-faulted to end the third set, he smiled even when things didn't go his way. And after the match, Chang walked back onto the court and waved goodbye to a standing ovation, clapping his hands in the air as he looked in every direction.
