Indian tennis stars safe after Rome hotel fire
22.05 IST 03rd May 2004
By IndiaExpress Bureau
Indian tennis stars Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were safe as they had not stayed at the hotel in Rome which caught fire on Saturday killing three persons.
The two players, who were in Rome to take part in the Italian Tennis Masters beginning today, were putting up in a different hotel.
"Mahesh (Bhupathi) was not involved. He was not staying in that hotel," the seven-time Grand Slam champion's spokesperson said in Bangalore.
Paes' father Dr Vece in Kolkata had not been able to reach him but presumed his son's safety since there had been no communication or news reports otherwise.
Bhupathi's partner Max Mirnyi, however, was among those who had to be evacuated. "Max is safe but was shaken," Bhupathi's spokesperson said. The residents of the Parco Dei Principil ai Parioli hotel were caught off guard by the fire that broke out in the wee hours of Saturday. They had just enough time to jump out of their bed and get out. Former French Open Champion Gustav Kuerten of Brazil lost his racquets in the fire while German Tommy Haas, who had taken tablets the previous night, had to be woken up before being rescued.

Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi split
Ashok Tuteja in Dubai The highly prosperous and exciting doubles partnership between Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi is all but over, a Dubai daily claimed today. Dr Vece Paes, Leander's father, was quoted as saying in The Gulf News that Paes and Bhupathi were not playing together on the ATP tour. ''However, they are open to partnering each other in the Davis Cup and Olympics.'' Dr Paes outlined the reasons for the split, saying ''as long as Mahesh retains Enrico Piperno as his coach, Leander is not open to a professional partnership. Thus, playing together for this year at least is out''. Dr Paes claimed that Mahesh had initially agreed to drop Piperno as his coach and opt for Bob Carmichael, who is currently coaching Leander. ''Mahesh had made up his mind twice but reneged on the agreement claiming that he needs Piperno to accompany him on the tour after recovering from a shoulder injury. After having waited for six months, Leander decided to go ahead,'' he said. When contacted by the daily, Krishna Bhupathi, Mahesh's father, also confirmed the split. ''Yes, they are not playing together. What the future holds, I do not know. There are no crystal balls. Mahesh is currently in Rome for the Italian open''.

KOLKATA: The city's budding tennis players will get a rare chance to interact with ace doubles player Mahesh Bhupathi, who will hold a clinic at the Jaidip Mukerjea Tennis Academy on Monday. Bhupathi, Wimbledon men's doubles runners-up along with Belarussian Max Mirnyi, will give valuable tips to around 100 youngsters from the JMTA and talented juniors from other clubs during the two-and half hour clinic. "We have decided to invite budding talent from other clubs as all youngsters can profit through such interactions with a top notch player like Bhupathi," Mukerjea said.

TENNIS
A special, winning partnership
The success and strength of the Leander Paes-Mahesh Bhupathi team, the greatest Indian doubles pair, springs from their belief in each other. NARESH KUMAR IT was a historic occasion for Indian tennis when Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the men's doubles title at the French Open championships. The four Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open - are ack nowledged as summits of the tennis world and winning a title in any one of them brings international acclaim and recognition. Paes' and Bhupathi's feat - they are the first Indian pair to win a Grand Slam title - is a matter of great pride and joy. So often in the past year have Paes and Bhupathi failed narrowly to win a Grand Slam doubles title that one was beginning to despair and wonder if they would ever pull it off. In 1998, which was a big year for them, they were in the semi-finals of three Grand Slam tournaments - the Australian Open, the French Open and the U.S. Open - and won a record eight events on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tour. This year, at the Australian Open, they were a step closer to the summit but fell at th e last hurdle, losing narrowly to the strong combination of Patrick Rafter and Jonas Bjorkman in the final. During the ATP tournament in Chennai in April, there was talk of a possible split between Paes and Bhupathi. Happily the boys stayed together, won the title in Chennai and have now won their first Grand Slam men's doubles title.
