1994 Arthur Ashe... Arthur Ashe Heroes are hard to find, especially if you look for them in popular culture. Some of them die young and some of them grow so unheroic off the field or stage that you almost wish they had. Then there was Arthur Ashe, who died too young at 49, but who wouldn't have worn out his welcome had he lived to be as old as Methuselah. Arthur began his tennis career at age 10 when his father sent him to the closest thing a black child in Virginia could find to a good tennis camp in those days. He sent him to Dr. Robert Johnson in Lynchburg. Dr. Johnson would take in a few young players and try to teach them how to play tennis and how to survive in a world as white as their uniforms. That training prepared him for a brilliant college career at UCLA. He became UCLA's No. 1 player and was named to the U.S. Davis Cup team in 1963 - the first black ever chosen. After UCLA the highlight of his career came in 1975 when he became the first black man to win the singles championship on the hallowed lawn at Wimbledon. By the time he retired from competitive tennis is 1979 after bypass heart surgery, Ashe was a legend. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985. He had something of an odd life - a black man in a white man's game, a child of limited means who'd later snack on a caviar in Monte Carlo, a multifaceted man in a sport that seems to best serve the tunnel-visioned and self-centered, a humanist in a world of deception and greed.

Arthur Ashe He was a man who in many ways took the civil rights baton from Jackie Robinson and ran with it all the way home, carrying the cause until his death in 1993. By any account, Arthur Ashe was an athlete and activist, a consummate scholar and professional, who did much more than play the game of tennis at an exceptional level. Ashe took on life. He showed generations of Americans how it should be lived. He was a black athlete who excelled, but wanted the world to know that blacks should excel throughout society. "We deify black athletes," Ashe said in 1992. "Black families are eight times more likely to push youngsters into athletics than are white families. "The disparity is glaring, if you think of the black parents' involvement at a sporting event versus their participation in a PTA meeting. We need to turn that around." Ashe grew up in Richmond, Va., a skinny kid with dark-rimmed glasses and reflexes that astounded. One spring, he fought for Robinson's No. 42 when he signed up for a Little League team.

SportsLine.com wire reports LONDON An Israeli-Pakistani doubles team won the ATP's Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award on Thursday for promoting "tolerance through tennis." Israel's Amir Hadad , a Jew, and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi , a Muslim, played doubles at Wimbledon and the U.S Open last year. "During a summer when fear and hatred garnered much of the headlines, Amir and Aisam-ul-Haq provided much needed relief with their simple message about tolerance through tennis," ATP chief executive Mark Miles said. The award comes on the 10th anniversary of Ashe's death. Ashe was the first black man to win the U.S Open in 1968, one of his 33 titles. Ashe fought racism during a career in which he was an ambassador for his sport. A tennis stadium in New York is named for him. Hadad and Qureshi reached the third round at Wimbledon and the second round at the U.S Open.

The Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center is located at 4015 Main Street in Manayunk (19127). It is the only indoor training center in the country just for children ages 4-18. It provides youth tennis lessons to over 1200 children each year. It is the AAYTC’s belief that introducing youth to tennis also teaches important life lessons, including sportsmanship, independence, and understanding of others. The AAYTC welcomes all children; those who cannot afford it play at no cost.
Statistics
  • Every 26 seconds an American child runs away from home. The dropout rate of inner-city public schools is hovering at 50%. Children who get involved in sports and after-school activities tend to stay in school and get better grades. Many children who get involved in activities such as tennis not only complete high school but also parlay their tennis skills into college scholarships. “Tennis is just a hook, a catalyst for teaching other, more important lessons.” – Arthur Ashe

Arthur R. Ashe Jr.
Arthur Ashe Jr., noted tennis professional and businessman, was born in Richmond, Virginia. He grew up playing tennis in his Brookfield home and at the Richmond Racquet Club, which was formed by local black tennis enthusiasts. By 1958, Ashe had reached the semifinals in the under-15 division of the National Junior Championships. Even before he finished high school, he was ranked 28 th in the country among junior tennis players. Ashe was a founder of the Association of Tennis Professionals and served as its first president. He joined with Charlie Pasarell and others to form the National Junior Tennis League. He worked with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, served as a consultant to Aetna and later on the corporation's board of directors and Minority Task Force. Beginning in the early '80s, Ashe was a prominent advocate for civil rights and for the health of Africans in Africa and those of African descent outside Africa. He became involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, and spoke out against crackdowns on Haitian refugees in the U.S. After a heart attack in 1979, Ashe underwent quadruple bypass surgery but continued to experience heart trouble. In 1983, two years after officially retiring from competitive tennis, Ashe underwent double bypass surgery. In 1988, Ashe was hospitalized after feeling numbness in his right hand. Tests showed he had toxoplasmosis, a bacterial infection often present in people with HIV. Further tests showed that Ashe had HIV. The source of his exposure was believed to be the blood transfusion he received during his 1983 surgery.
