Arthur Ashe
Arthur Ashe July 10 February 6 ) was a prominent African American tennis player who was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia , USA. He is well remembered for his efforts to further social causes. Ashe began to attract the attention of tennis fans after being awarded a tennis scholarship at UCLA in . That same year, Ashe was the first African American ever selected to the United States's Davis Cup team. In , Ashe won the individual NCAA championship, and was a chief contributor in UCLA's winning the team NCAA championship in the same year. With this successful college career behind him, Ashe quickly ascended to the upper echelon of tennis players worldwide after turning professional in 1966. By , Ashe was considered by most as the best American among male tennis players: he had won the inaugural U.S. Open in , and had aided the U.S. Davis Cup team to victory that same year. Concerned that tennis pros were not receiving winnings commensurate with the sport's growing popularity, Ashe was one of the key figures behind the formation of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). That year would prove even more momentous for Ashe when he was denied a visa by the South African government, thereby keeping him out of the South African Open. Ashe chose to use this denial to publicize in the media South Africa's

Help Me Choose My Seats at the Arthur Ashe Stadium
The Very Best Seats:

Editor Rating:
Very Good Seats: Rows A-C of the Loge are still very close to the action and tickets for these sections are often available at about half the price or less of the Courtside seats. If price is a bit of an issue but you still want to sit in very good seats, try to secure some seats in the first few rows of the Loge section.
Editor Rating:
Quality and Affordable Seats: Rows D-G of the Loge are very popular with our customers. Seats here can be obtained at some of the lowest prices for the second level. Most people look for seats in these rows simply to avoid the stigma of sitting in the upper level. These are still considered quality seats for most tennis fans.
Editor Rating:
Budget Minded: If you simply want to attend the US Open and choose not to pay the high prices to sit right on top off the action, the upper level seats make for a great alternative. The upper level consists of 25 rows. It does tend to get cold at the top of this stadium during the night sessions. The first 10 rows are just above the Loges so the view is not much different. The higher rows in the upper level can be a bit of a hike to get to. Keep in mind that this is a tennis stadium, not a baseball or football stadium. You can see fine and easily recognize the players from any seat you choose. Simply put, even if you sit high up in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the atmosphere of this venue is like no other.

Arthur Ashe Arthur Ashe was born on this date in 1943. He was an African-American tennis player, author, and the first black man to win a major tennis tournament.
Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr., was born in Richmond, Virginia. At age ten he began to play tennis under the direction of Dr. Walter Johnson, who taught 1957 Wimbledon women's champion, Althea Gibson. Ashe went on to attend UCLA. In 1963 he became the first African American to play on the Davis Cup national tennis team, and won the U.S. intercollegiate singles championship. After graduating from UCLA in 1966 with a degree in business administration, Ashe was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve.
In 1968 the major tennis tournaments opened their competitions to professionals, but Ashe remained an amateur because of his military status. At the U.S. Open that year he defeated several professional players and won the men's singles title. Ashe is the only amateur ever to win the U.S. amateur championship and U.S. Open titles during the same year. In 1969, Ashe joined the professional tennis circuit; he and several other players formed the group that became the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the governing body that oversees rankings, prize money, and international tennis events.
His best season came in 1975, when he beat Jimmy Connors for the Wimbledon singles title and attained the number-one ranking in the United States. Ashe also won doubles championships at the French Open in 1971 and at the Australian Open in 1977. Ashe survived heart surgery in 1979 and announced his retirement from competition a year later. He then served as non-playing captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team and became involved in various charitable and youth-oriented activities such as the National Junior Tennis League and the ABC Cities Tennis Program.

Arthur Ashe was born in Richmond, Virginia, on July 10, 1943. He learned to play tennis at the Richmond Racket Club, a club established for area African Americans. At the time, Richmond's public facilities schools, theaters, restaurants, and even tennis courts were racially segregated. Ashe practiced hard. In 1960 and 1961, he won the Junior Indoor Singles Championship and was ranked 28th in the country, even though he was still in high school. He attended UCLA on a tennis scholarship and went on to win both the U.S. Amateur Tennis Championship and the U.S. Open. In 1968, Ashe became the first African-American member of the Davis Cup Team and helped the United States win its first championship in five years. In 1975, Ashe upset heavily favored Jimmy Connors at Wimbledon and won the World Championship Tennis (WCT) singles title over Bjorn Borg. Arthur Ashe suffered a heart attack in 1979, and his career turned in a different direction. He was named captain of the U.S. Davis Cup Team and, although inactive as a player, worked hard from the sidelines. He was named president of the Association of Tennis Professionals and co-founder of the National Junior Tennis League. After his retirement from tennis, Ashe appeared on television as a sports commentator and wrote a syndicated newspaper column. He wrote several books on tennis, including his autobiography, Off the Court But Arthur Ashe was more than a tennis champion. He was an outspoken advocate of racial justice, both in the United States and overseas. He raised money for many charitable causes and worked to end apartheid in South Africa. In 1988, he wrote
