Arthur Ashe July 10 February 6 ) was a prominent African American tennis player who was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia , USA. He is well remembered for his efforts to further social causes. Ashe began to attract the attention of tennis fans after being awarded a tennis scholarship at UCLA in . That same year, Ashe was the first African American ever selected to the United States's Davis Cup team. In , Ashe won the individual NCAA championship, and was a chief contributor in UCLA's winning the team NCAA championship in the same year. With this successful college career behind him, Ashe quickly ascended to the upper echelon of tennis players worldwide after turning professional in 1966. By , Ashe was considered by most as the best American among male tennis players: he had won the inaugural U.S. Open in , and had aided the U.S. Davis Cup team to victory that same year. Concerned that tennis pros were not receiving winnings commensurate with the sport's growing popularity, Ashe was one of the key figures behind the formation of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). That year would prove even more momentous for Ashe when he was denied a visa by the

Search Tennis Arthur Ashe: Much More Than Tennis Imagine that we could travel back in time to the Richmond, Virginia of the early 1950s and meet the young Arthur Ashe, but know nothing of who he was. We would meet a skinny kid who loved books and music and who, due to segregation , was excluded from playing at any of the local tennis clubs and camps. It would have been hard to so much as imagine that he could become a US Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon champion. Arthur Ashe needed extraordinary qualities to become a champion, and those qualities ended up giving us much more than memories of a great athlete. Arthur learned to play in the local public park. His father and a local coach, Ronald Charity, noticed his talent and arranged for him to work with Dr. Walter Johnson, who coached Althea Gibson, the first black player ever to win a Grand Slam title. Dr. Johnson gave Arthur a foundation that carried him through an outstanding high school tennis career that earned him a tennis scholarship at UCLA. He became UCLA's top player, which led to his selection in 1963 as the first ever black player to join the US Davis Cup team. In 1965, Arthur won the NCAA singles title and led UCLA to the team championship.

In 1968, he helped create the USTA National Junior Tennis League, which has since introduced tennis to thousands of inner-city junior players. In 1970, to bring world attention against apartheid , he called for South Africa to be expelled from the International Lawn Tennis Federation, and to further make his point, he applied for, and was denied, a visa to travel there. South Africa yielded to pressure in 1973, allowing Ashe, the first black pro ever, to play in its national championship. Arthur's activism for civil rights never ceased. In 1992, he protested the expulsion of Haitian refugees and was arrested in front of the White House.

Web posted at: 1:20 a.m. EDT RICHMOND, Virginia (CNN) The city that banned young Arthur Ashe from its whites-only tennis courts dedicated a monument to the late athlete Wednesday as statues of Confederate heroes looked on. The 12-foot bronze statue of the first black man to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open was unveiled on Monument Avenue before about 1,500 people, ending more than a year of bitter debate in the former capital of the Confederacy. Statues of Gen. Robert E. Lee and other Confederate leaders also line the roadway. "Arthur Ashe Jr. is a true Virginia hero, and he belongs here," said Johnnie Ashe, Arthur's brother. Former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first African-American to be elected to that state leadership post, said the street "is now an avenue for all people." (128k AIFF or WAV sound) Ashe was praised for his accomplishments as a tennis star as well as an activist for human rights and AIDS, the disease that killed him in 1993. Ashe contracted the virus that causes AIDS from a blood transfusion during heart surgery. Wednesday would have been his 53rd birthday. For many, the monument is sweet justice.

A singular figure in the game's history as the only black male to win a major singles titlethree of them in factArthur Robert Ashe, Jr., also set a record in 1968 that is most unlikely to be equaled. He won both the U.S. Amateur and Open championships, the first time such a double was possible. No one has come remotely close since.
That first season of the open era was a whirlwind year for him, then 1st Lt. Ashe of the U.S. Army. In order to maintain Davis Cup eligibility and gain time away from duty for important tournaments, Ashe was required to maintain his amateur status. Determining that the traditional (and previously amateur) U.S. Singles Championships at Forest Hills would become the inaugural U.S. Open in 1968, the USTA designated Longwood Cricket Club in Boston as the site for a U.S. Amateur tournament. Seeded first in Boston, Ashe won the title by surging past teammate Bob Lutz in the exciting final, 4-6, 6-3, (8-10), 6-0, 6-4.
However, with pros introduced to Forest Hills, Ashe was a lightly regarded fifth seed. Nevertheless, at 25, he came of age as an internationalist. Unflappable over the New York fortnight, he served-and-volleyed splendidly. In the final he clocked 26 aces, returned with precision, and held his cool in a five-set final-round victory over pro Tom Okker, 14-12, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Ashe, Arthur Robert Ashe, Arthur Robert, , American tennis player, b. Richmond, Va. Ashe rose from his hometown's public courts to become the first African-American male to reach prominence in tennis. He won the 1965 intercollegiate singles championship while at the Univ. of California at Los Angeles. Denied a visa by South Africa on racial grounds in 1970, Ashe forced the issue, appearing before the United Nations and urging the World Tennis Union to expel South Africa because of its apartheid policy. Noted for his grace, hard-hit topspin, and outstanding backhand, Ashe won the 1968 U.S. Open, the 1970 Australian Open, and the 1975 Wimbledon title. He retired as a player following a 1979 heart attack, but continued to serve as the U.S. Davis Cup captain. In 1992 he announced that he had acquired AIDS from a heart operation years earlier. He remained an active spokesperson on many issues, including race relations and AIDS, until his death. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

Ashe's activism helped mold the future
    By Greg Garber

When a statue of native son Arthur Ashe was proposed in Richmond, Va., there was a blaze of controversy as there was so often in his life. Never one who shied from controversy, the statue of Arthur Ashe stands as a fitting tribute to his legacy amid others honoring Confederate leaders in Richmond, Va. The city's Monument Avenue already was populated by memorials to the heroes of the Confederacy, including Robert E. Lee, J.E.B. Stuart and Stonewall Jackson. A number of good old citizens objected to the idea of placing an African-American tennis player who died of AIDs-related pneumonia in that setting. Of course, many Ashe proponents, including his wife, Jeanne, felt the same way. Ashe already had experienced his share of shackles growing up in Richmond, they reasoned segregated tennis courts drove him to leave at the age of 18 so why, even symbolically, revisit the specters of hate and discrimination? In the end, a striking 12-foot bronze statue, set on a 44-ton granite base, was unveiled July 10, 1996, the day Ashe would have turned 53. The statue depicts Ashe in tennis warm-ups and sneakers, holding books in one hand and tennis rackets in the other. Four children gaze up at him and there is this inscription from the Bible: "Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us."

And he said, 'No, the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with is being a black man in this society says author Ralph Wiley about Arthur Ashe on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. The tennis "firsts" were served up and chronicled through most of Arthur Ashe's life. They often arrived hand in hand with his color: first African-American male to win the U.S. championship, first to win at Wimbledon, first to play for the U.S. Davis Cup team, and on and on. Arthur Ashe won the 1968 U.S. Open as an amateur. While sports record books dutifully mark these achievements, civil rights and health historians embrace a more substantive image of the man who seldom shied from fighting for what he believed was right. His fight lasted to the final days of a much-publicized bout with AIDS, a personal struggle he had hoped to keep private. An independent thinker who considered himself a moderate, Ashe crusaded against South African apartheid and the treatment of Haitian refugees. He pushed for higher academic standards for athletes, particularly for minorities. He raised millions of dollars for inner-city tennis centers and the United Negro College Fund, started the African- American Athletic Association and wrote
