Thorpe failed to qualify for the 400 at the Australian Olympic trials last month because of faults at the start. The multiple world-record holder qualified for the 100 and 200 freestyle, but his best chance for a gold medal is the 400. Stevens qualified for the 400, placing second to Grant Hackett at the trials. "The decision I've made is to stand aside in the 400 in the hope that I'll get to see Ian swim that race in the final on Day 1 at the Olympic Games," Stevens said. Australia Swimming Inc. media spokesman Ian Hanson issued a press release saying no comment would be forthcoming from either the national swimming body or from Thorpe until Tuesday. According to Australian Swimming criteria, if one of the selected swimmers for the Olympics withdraws from an event, that place goes to the next ranked swimmer, who must be a member of the team.

Moments later the 17-year-old prodigy found his reserves of energy to swim one of the finest final legs seen in Olympic competition to help his country defeat the Americans in the 4x100m freestyle relay. It was a remarkable achievement on the first day of the pool events as the 17,500 crowd who came to the Homebush Bay indoor centre witnessed a legend in the making. The local boy from Sydney delivered at the right time and at the perfect occasion as he destroyed all who came before him in the mens' 400m freestyle and broke the world record by nearly a second, in a time of 3 minutes 40.59 seconds. Kitted in an all-in-one wetsuit, the 17-year-old stood out from the crowd and never looked like losing the three length lead he established in the opening 25 metres. Thorpe moved almost effortlessly in the pool as the swimmers behind him, led by Massimiliano Rosolino of Italy and Klete Keller of America, tried in vain to make up the difference.

They will need a new dictionary to contain all the superlatives that will be lavished on Ian Thorpe after a first day in the Olympic pool that rewrote swimming history. Such is the domination in the freestyle events by the 17 year old from Sydney, that he was expected to have just one opponent in the final, the clock, and so it proved to be. But even more exceptional that his new world record in the 400 metres freestyle of 3 mins 40.59, was the "Thorpedo's" final 50 metres in the men's 4 by 100 metres freestyle relay final for Australia. Less than an hour after his solo triumph Thorpe was back in the pool anchoring the home team, but with a length to go he seemed to have given second best to Gary Hall jnr. of the United States. With 25 metres left, the man with the size 17 feet just accelerated effortlessly and passed Hall in the final few metres to help Australia to another world record of 3.13.67, surpassing the previous best set by the American in Atlanta four years ago by a second and a half.
