(Jan. 20, 2001) The BYU women's swimming and diving team ended the season by winning a three-team meet with New Mexico State and the University of Denver, Saturday, but lost a dual meet competition to Colorado State, 145-98, Friday evening. BYU scored 52 points, second-place New Mexico State had 34 points, while the University of Denver scored 27 points to finish third. The Cougars won 6-of-13 events en route to the victory. First-place finishers for BYU included Jennifer Teerlink in the 1000 free, Amanda Grant in the 400 IM and Monica Ferrell in the 500 free. BYU's 200 medley relay team finished in first place to gain seven points. Second-place finishers included Melissa Thompson in the 1000 free, Rachel Mason in the 200 fly, Amy Thompson in the 100 back and BYU's 200 free relay team. The divers were led by Kelli Einfeldt and Anna Tutunnikova. Einfeldt won both the 1-meter and the 3-meter boards with scores of 250.45 and 282.00, respectively. Tutunnikova was close behind, finishing second in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter events.

But it doesn't have to be as much work as you think. The biggest problem for most people is breathing and recovery of the arms. You feel you have to climb out of the water for that precious air, which means you put so much effort into breathing and recovery that you have nothing left for the actions that move you forward. Your problem is more common than you think. Even world-class swimmers like Jenny Thompson are looking for ways to make breathing and recovery easier in the butterfly. Thanks to her constant exploration, you can improve your stroke, too. "Jenny actually is a freestyler," said Richard Quick, the head coach of the women's team at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, Thompson's alma mater. "But her butterfly technique has freed her up to improve her freestyle." Thompson's butterfly is a "forward-balancing, forward-attacking fly, not a 'push-back' fly," says technique-coach Bill Boomer. Stott Forever Young Age isn't a barrier to thirteen 30-somethings and a 40-something as they set their sights on the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials. The following 14 swimmers comprise the largest group of U.S. swimmers over 30 ever to set their sights on making Olympic Trials. Their prospects range from a virtual lock to a six-time Trials veteran to a 44-year-old grandmother. As we learn more about the human body, physical limits seem to melt away. "I bought into the notion that you had to stop what you were doing to get on with your life," says Byron Davis. "In the last two-and-a-half years, I've realized that swimming will always be a part of my life." Time was when teenagers dominated the world rankings. No offense to then 16-year-old Ian Thorpe, but in 1999, five of the world's top six women 50 meter freestylers were more than 25, including three over age 30. Likewise, seven of the top 12 men's 200 IMers were 25 or older. Whether the following swimmers climb atop the medal stand in Sydney or miss making Trials is not important.
