- Lane 9 News - EXCLUSIVE!! Jenny Thompson to Make Comeback June 7, 2002 By Phillip Whitten
NASHUA, NH, June 7. JENNY Thompson, the most decorated female athlete in US Olympic history, is on the comeback trail. She has entered the Quebec Cup, to be held in Montreal, July 5-7.
Thompson, 29, a Stanford graduate who just completed her first year of Medical School at Columbia University in New York, told SwimInfo that she is swimming this summer, training under Mike Parratto, head coach of the Seacoast Swim Club in Dover, New Hampshire in the same pool where she began her career as a youngster. Back then that pool was known as the Guppy Park Pool. Today, it is the Jenny Thompson Pool. In three Olympic Games, Thompson won a total of eight gold medals more than any other American woman in any sport along with a silver and bronze medal. Over an international career that spanned more than a decade, she also won five World Championship gold medals, along with three silvers and a bronze; in three Short Course World Championship meets she won eight gold medals plus five silvers and a bronze. Over the course of her career, Thompson set world records in four different individual events, plus two relays, and she was a 25-time US national champion. In 1998 she was named "Female World Swimmer of the Year" by

- Lane 9 News - Jenny Thompson Supports New Hampshire Aquarium August 1, 2002 DOVER, NH, Aug. 1. ON Thursday August 8th, 10-time Olympic Medalist Jenny Thompson with join a cruise to benefit the Seacoast Aquarium and Science Museum project in her hometown.
Thompson, the most medaled American female Olympic athlete of all-time will be the honored guest on a cruise to benefit the Citizens for A Seacoast Aquarium, a non-profit organization developing the aquarium and science museum.
Thompson has become both a member and an advocate of the aquarium project: "I was honored to be asked to support the aquarium project. I really believe in environmental education and I love supporting organizations that work with kids. "Of course as a swimmer, I love the water. I have always enjoyed visiting aquariums and know others from around the region will come to support it. I envision a place where people can learn about aquatic life in the area, as well as the natural habitats on land.

De Bruijn thinks she can go even faster
World record holder Inge de Bruijn edged American rival Jenny Thompson for top honours in the women's 100m butterfly heats as both broke the Olympic record in the Homebush Bay pool on Saturday. Thompson, who held the world record before her Dutch rival improved on it twice this year, rippled through her heat in 57.66 seconds to annihilate the 58.62 mark set by Qian Hong of China at the 1992 Barcelona Games. But two heats later De Bruijn improved on that, clocking 57.60 to top the list of 16 qualifiers for the evening's semifinals, in which her own 56.64 world record could come under threat. The final is on Sunday. "I have a gut feeling I can do more," De Bruijn said. "Fifty-six seconds should win me the gold medal." Thompson already has five gold medals, won in relay events at the past two Olympics, tying her with speedskater Bonnie Blair for the most victories by an American woman. "I was really pleased with my time," said Thompson. "I was controlling myself emotionally. I'm feeling good and strong and relaxed."

Saturday, 23 September, 2000, 05:05 GMT 06:05 UK De Bruijn completes hat-trick
Inge de Bruijn lands her third gold of the Games
Holland's Inge de Bruijn added the women's 50m freestyle gold to her Sydney Olympic haul on Saturday, while America's Jenny Thompson picked up her eighth Olympic gold in women's 4x100m medley relay. With successes in the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle already behind her, de Bruijn powered home over the shorter distance to beat Sweden's Therese Alshammar in to second while Dara Torres of the United States took the bronze. Her winning time of 24.32 secs was outside the world record mark she set in the semi-finals. Great Britain's Alison Sheppard finished seventh in 25.45 secs after making an excellent start. "I'm a little bit disappointed by my place and time, but even my best time would not have got a medal today," said Sheppard. "The experience of the whole thing has been amazing though and I tried to enjoy it today. I was going well for the first 25 metres but at the end I guess I just wasn't fast enough. "I've made an Olympic final and I've got to be happy with that. There was a lot more pressure in the final than the semi-final."
