During the Phillips 66 National Swimming Championships, August 12-17, 2002, at the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) and Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex, Jenny Thompson ceremonially placed her ten Olympic medals at ISHOF for the thousands of annual visiting aquatic enthusiasts to view. Jenny, a native of Dover, New Hampshire, attended the meet with her mother and were both pictured presenting the medals to Preston Levi, ISHOF’s Henning Library director and Dr. Sam Freas, ISHOF president/CEO. Enthusiastically accepting Jenny’s honors on behalf of the ISHOF Board of Directors and Trustees Freas said, “We’re ecstatic that Jenny has chosen ISHOF, the world’s museum and Hall of Fame for swimming, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming, to house her collection of ten Olympic medals. We’ve planned an impressive exhibit to highlight Jenny’s accomplishments and look forward to sharing it with the world.” A Stanford graduate and present Columbia University medical school student, Thompson has numerous honors to her credit. She claims the most Olympic gold medals for any U.S. woman (8) and the most Olympic medals of any U.S. female swimmer; is the world record holder in the 50-meter and 100-meter fly (scm); is the American record-holder in the 100 free (lcm, scm, and scy); and has the fastest butterfly relay split in history as part of the world record-breaking 400-meter medley relay at the 2000 Olympics.

      History
The National Collegiate Athletic Association, at its annual convention in January of 1981, voted to begin conducting national championship events for women during the 1981-82 school year. Championships in nine sports, including swimming and diving (considered a single sport), were established that year. The first National Collegiate Women's Swimming and Diving Championship was hosted by the University of Florida in March of 1982. Florida won that first meet, but since then Texas and Stanford have dominated, winning 15 of the 16 team championships between 1983 and 1998. However, the University of Georgia has won three straight team titles before the streak was broken by Auburn in 2002. Top of Page History Biography Glossaries Calendar Quotations ... Directory

    200 Backstroke
After winning two titles in smashing style last night, Natalie Coughlin looks to be on fire. The CAL sophomore cruised this morning, touching in 1:53.83, nearly three full seconds off her American record in this event. Even while cruising, Coughlin's time is the 11th fastest performance ever. Coughlin should shatter her record tonight, and could quite possibly become the first woman ever under the 1:50 barrier. In a tight battle for second between AUBURN freshman Margaret Hoelzer and SMU's Alenka Kejzar. Hoelzer is the SEC champion in this event, while Kejzar finished second last night in the 400 IM. Also in the final is the bronze medallist in last nights 100, ARIZONA's Beth Botsford.
    100 Freestyle
After breaking 1996 quadruple gold medallist Amy Van Dyken's 50 free record, GEORGIA's Maritza Correia has her eyes set on another multiple Olympic medallist's record: Jenny Thompson's 1992 47.61 standard. Looking very smooth this morning, Correia stopped the clock in 48.22, becoming the 7th fastest performer ever. Correia's Bulldog teammate, Stafanie Williams is in second after the morning swims, touching in 48.77 to hold off two AUBURN tigers, sophomore's Rebekah Short and Eileen Coparropa. Coparropa finished 6th at last year's NCAA meet, while Short is in her first final in this event at NCAA's. Last night's 200 freestyle champion Sarah Tolar and 2000 Olympian Erin Phenix should also provide some fast times tonight.

Thompson makes history again (Day Two) Jenny Thompson posted the fourth-fastest performance ever in the 100-meter butterfly with a winning time of 58.36 here at the U.S. Open. In the morning prelims, Thompson broke another long-standing Mary T. Meagher record, swimming a 59.80, which dropped Meagher's 1985 meet record. Prior to finals, Meagher made a surprise appearance to give Thompson with a gift and say a few words in front of the San Antonio audience.
