British and Commonwealth Records continued to tumble on day three of the British Swimming Olympic Trials as more of the nation’s swimmers secured qualification for selection to Team GB. Gregor Tait (City of Edinburgh) turned in the performance of the night to win the Men’s 200m Backstroke in a new British and Commonwealth time. He was closely followed into Olympic contention by Stockport Metro’s James Goddard
who also dipped under his own previous British Record. Tait finished in 1:57.42, Goddard went 1:57.70 and team mate Simon Birch finished with the bronze in 2:05.70. The front two had been aiming to get within the qualifying time of 1:59.15 and did so quite easily by beating Goddard’s former record of 1:58.58 and Australian Matt Welsh’s Commonwealth standard of 1:57.59. “I knew I had it in me,” said Tait, “and decided to show it tonight. I’m just pleased that it was enough to qualify for the Olympics.

Australian team on track for greatest Games of all

KERRY O'BRIEN: Australia has always prided itself on fighting above its weight, but never has there been so much public confidence expressed by officials.
If that sentiment is justified then the Aussie team is headed for an unprecedented bonanza of medals.
The official target is to finish in the top five teams in the world not bad for a nation of 19 million, if they can do it.
But Australians aren't so jingoistic that they'll be blind to the efforts of the rest of the world's best.
Aussies love a winner, hometown or otherwise.
Sean Murphy previews the highlights.
SEAN MURPHY: The world is holding its breath for the Millennium Games.
And from tomorrow, swimming is set to dominate the first week of the planet's biggest sporting festival.
GERRY COLLINS, ABC RADIO COMMENTATOR: Ian Thorpe is just so far ahead of the rest of the world that he could swim three or four or five seconds outside his best time and still win it by a couple of seconds. IAN THORPE: There's no destiny about it and there's no position that is a guaranteed position when it comes to swimming or any other sport.

#24 - Reverse Psychology Can Take The Pressure Off
There are champion swimmers who occasionally use unusual approaches to achieve their goals. Some of these unusual methods may not be great for all swimmers to copy, yet some may find these alternative methods very helpful. Here is an example of an unusual approach, which may (or may not) be useful to you. You be the judge. Susie O'Neill admitted this week, after qualifying for the 2000 Australian Olympic team and breaking Mary T. Meagher's 19 year old butterfly record, that she uses pessimism to help reach her goals! What this means is that she actually tells herself that she probably WON'T achieve her goals and so there is nothing to feel pressured about - in fact (in her mind) she probably believes that the pressure is really on her competitors! This is often called 'reverse psychology', which is where you pretend to yourself that you believe the opposite of what you REALLY believe. If that sounds confusing, you're right! To help make this clearer, I'll say it again - you pretend to yourself that you believe the opposite of what you really believe. This can take the pressure off you, and you can place it onto someone else!

#8 - Trying Too Hard Has it ever seemed that the harder you try, the further away from your goal you become? This is often experienced by swimmers whose desire to achieve a major goal becomes so all-consuming that they have trouble thinking about anything else . This often creates the situation where (much to their frustration) the goal appears to be moving further away from them instead of getting closer. This brings us to the subject of trying too hard in races, instead of just focusing on the race itself. I am not talking about going into races without trying, quite the opposite - we can get more from our mind and body if we just allow ourselves to do what it is we've been trained for, instead of

Thursday, 12 October, 2000, 10:29 GMT 11:29 UK O'Neill contemplates retirement
Susie O'Neill (centre) may opt for a life away from swimming
Australia's Susie O'Neill may retire from swimming in order to concentrate on her marriage. The swimmer, who took the 200m freestyle gold at the Sydney Olympics but lost the 200m butterfly to America's Misty Hyman, says that the need for her to train constantly and spend time away from home in order to remain at the top of her game may force the issue. O'Neill will go on a surf safari with husband Cliff Fairley to consider her sporting future. "He is saying retirement definitely. I don't think he wants me to keep swimming," said O'Neill. "Swimming always came first - even before Cliff - over the last couple of years so it would be nice to reverse that a bit." O'Neill, 27, said the pressures of professional sports forced a selfishness that could strain marriages. "It's hard on the relationship when you're an elite athlete, especially when you're living in different cities," she said.

Tuesday, 19 September, 2000, 09:36 GMT 10:36 UK O'Neill strikes gold for Australia
Susie O'Neill gave the home crowd plenty to shout about
Australia's Susie O'Neill gave the home crowd another gold medal to cheer in the pool when she held on to win the 200m freestyle. The Commonwealth champion could not contain her delight as the passionate supporters chanted her name. O'Neill, who was fastest in Monday's heats and semi-finals, saw off a determined late spurt from Slovakia's Martina Moravcova to win in 1 minute 58.24 seconds. Defending champion Claudia Poll, who was bidding to become the first woman to retain the crown, had to settle for a bronze medal. The Costa Rican also took bronze in Sunday's 400m freestyle. "That was pretty painful," O'Neill said. "Thank goodness it's over, I'm so relieved I finished." The 27-year-old, who plans to hang up her goggles after the Olympics after marrying her childhood sweetheart last year, trailed Moravcova at the end of the first lap before making her move at the 70 metre mark. She stretched her lead to 0.55 when they turned for home but with the capacity crowd, which included Australian Prime Minister John Howard, willing her to victory she thrashed her slender arms through the water to reach the wall first.
