Men's swimmers ready for Big Ten showdown Jim Schortemeyer - Staff Reporter FEB. 26, 1998 The stage is set for a dramatic and assuredly close Big Ten men's swimming and diving championship, starting today at the University Aquatic Center. For 10 years, starting in 1986, Michigan was the Big Ten Champion in men's swimming and diving. But a funny thing happened on their way to the way to a 11th consecutive championship Minnesota beat the Wolverines soundly. Last year, Michigan exacted it's revenge, winning back the championship by 17 points. It should be a battle between those two teams again this year. If the Gophers hold true to form, they will get off to a good start. At last year's championships, Minnesota jumped out to a 200-178 lead on the first day of competition, but slowly fell back to Michigan, eventually losing 648-631. The good news for Minnesota is that it has found ample replacements for the swimmers and divers it lost last year. All of freshman Alex Massura's statistics are impressive. He has Minnesota's top six times in the 200-yard backstroke, and he has a total of 16 first-place finishes in various events this year. Perhaps the most impressive fact is that he's already broken a school record. Most records fall during the championships, when swimmers are rested. Diver Dan Croaston, another freshman, has come through for the Gophers so far this season, and Minnesota coaches are hoping he remains consistent. Earlier in the year, coaches said they hoped for a top eight finish from Croaston. Their expectations may need an adjustment Croaston won all but one diving competition this year.

INDIANAPOLIS, IND The Auburn men's swim team won its second NCAA title in three years as Auburn scored 467.5 points and Head Coach David Marsh was named Coach of the Year. AU won a total of seven events including four of the five relays and three individual events. AU finished the meet just like they started it, by setting an NCAA, NCAA meet and U.S. Open record, only this time in the 400 free relay. Brock Newman, Brett Hawke, Aaron Ciarla and Romain Barnier swam a record time of 2:50.90. "I was like a cat on a hot stove Saturday night," said Marsh. "The relays played a crucial role. The fun thing about it was that there were different heroes on each different relay." Dave Denniston won his first ever individual NCAA title as he won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:55.51. Denniston broke the school record formerly held by Adam Jerger (1:57.90) during prelims when he swam 1:56.50 then broke his own record in the finals. "This is a dream come true. That's why I came to Auburn, why a lot of guys did. Being this close and being able to taste it is a lot of fun," said Denniston.

FUKUOKA, Japan - Behind the efforts of Ian Thorpe, Australia clinched the No. 1 spot at the World Swimming Championship on Sunday with a world record and a stirring relay win. Thorpe watched with his teammates from the bleachers as Grant Hackett got Australia's 12th gold medal and Petria Thomas led the women's 400-meter medley relay to her third gold medal and Australia's 13th. The U.S. team that dominated the world championship in 1988 and topped the Sydney Olympic standings with 33 medals, including 14 gold, wound up with nine gold and 26 overall to finish behind Australia (13-4-6) and China (10-6-4). "The Americans have been No. 1 for a long time and I'll make no bones about it, we want to beat them and we did just that," said Australia's head coach Don Talbot. "It's fabulous and it makes me feel great." China's last campaign in Perth was plagued by the drug scandal surrounding its female swimmers, but its divers restored some dignity this time. Olympic champion Tian Liang clinched victory with a high-scoring final dive from the 10-meter platform, giving China its eighth diving gold.

Malchow sets Olympic record in 200 fly
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Spurred by rousing cheers of "Thorpey! Thorpey!," Ian Thorpe gave the Australians a huge lead as they set the world record in winning the Olympic 800-meter freestyle relay Tuesday. The Australian men's 4x200 relay team celebrated Tuesday after winning gold in a world-record 7:07.05. It was the Aussies' second men's relay victory over the Americans, who narrowly lost to the host country in the 400 free relay last weekend. Tom Malchow, however, gave the U.S. team reason to celebrate by winning the 200 butterfly and lowering his own Olympic record for the third time in two days. His victory gave the Americans their sixth swimming gold medal in four days. The Aussie team of Thorpe, Michael Klim, Todd Pearson and William Kirby won in 7 minutes, 7.05 seconds lowering Australia's world mark of 7:08.79 set in August 1999. Australian officials said Thorpe would swim the 400 medley relay, with heats beinning on Friday. That means Thorpe gets another chance to add to the three golds and the silver he's already won at his first Olympics.

    Malchow, Potts boost swimmers
    By Doug Stevens
    Daily Sports Writer
As Michigan fans have discovered in recent years, freshman athletes can truly make a difference in a team's fate. While the Michigan's men's swimming and diving team the defending national champion was hardly in dire need of a dynamic recruiting class, it has an impressive crop of first-year students on its roster. Michigan's recruiting class totals 11 for the 1995-96 campaign. This includes seven swimmers and four divers. Heading the group of freshmen include Tom Malchow and Andy Potts in the pool, and Brett Wilmot off the diving board. Malchow, whose primary event is the 200 butterfly, is the most heralded recruit. The Mendota Heights, Minn., native won the gold medal in the 200 butterfly at this past summer's World University Games and took the silver in the same event at the Pan-Am Games. Malchow has not lost a step this season as he has emerged as the Wolverines' top swimmer in the butterfly. "He's been the most conscientious and consistent freshman," coach Jon Urbanchek said. "He is giving 110 percent day in and day out."
