Lenny Krayzelburg: The Newest American Champion
Ultimately, Lenny Krayzelburg, who became a U.S. citizen in 1995, would like to become America's newest Olympian and Olympic gold medalist. Lenny Krayzelburg—the name sounds made-up, like it should belong to a rock star. And with his classic, California-surfer good looks, Lenny looks the part. But though he's a star, Lenny is no rock musician. The recent University of Southern California grad is a double world swimming champion, an American record holder, and with his Horatio Alger rags-to-riches story, one of the hottest properties in the sport today. That's why Lenny's story will be featured on Turner Television during the Goodwill Games to be held in New York July 30-Aug. 2. Lenny Krayzelburg was born on Sept. 28, 1975 in Odessa—that's Odessa as in the late, unlamented USSR, not Odessa as in Texas—the first child of Oleg and Yelena Krayzelburg. The Krayzelburgs were middle-class in Russia's classless society: Oleg owned a coffee shop, and Yelena worked as an accountant at a shoe factory. But, in the USSR, especially because they are Jewish, their horizons were limited. Oleg and Yelena longed for a better life for Lenny and his sister Marsha in America.

#41 - Nervousness Is Energy
Ian Thorpe, Inge DeBruijn and Lenny Krayzelburg all won gold medals over the weekend at the 2000 Sydney Olympics - which in some respects is not surprising as they were considered the 'swimmers to beat' in their particular events. However, as experienced as these swimmers are, they all admitted battling with severe bouts of nervousness - even with THEIR levels of inner-belief! Ian Thorpe said afterwards that he hadn't expected to feel any nervousness at all - but when he came out form the marshalling area and the huge crowd began cheering for him, he felt the emotion rise up from inside of him, which is exactly the feeling many competitors experience in times of great stress or nervousness. Despite this, he won the 400m freestyle in world record time, and backed up an hour later to claim another world record in the 4x100m relay. Inge DeBruijn revealed that she used to battle severe bouts of nervousness to compete at the highest level, but said (a day before her race) that she was confident and ready to go. As a gold medal at the Olympics was her main goal, plus the fact that she had never swum at an Olympics before, you can almost be sure that when she walked out to the blocks for her first ever Olympic final, she would have experienced the same sort of nerves Ian Thorpe did in the 400m freestyle. Yet she won the 100m butterfly in world record time (her 9th world record for the year). Lenny Krayzelburg is probably the closest thing we can imagine to a machine when it comes to performing in the pool, his confidence and consistency are legendary - yet even he said that he felt extremely nervous before the final race. Despite a close tussle with Josh Watson, he came out on top as usual - that is what true champions do.

#23 - How Strong is a Reputation? How important is a swimmer's reputation? Does it have an effect on other swimmers? Sure it does, overall a swimmer's reputation has a huge effect on most competitors - but here is a piece of information about reputations which you may never, ever want to forget. A swimmer's reputation is ONLY powerful if you ALLOW it to be! If you take the approach that you are only 'swimming for 2nd place' because you think your competitor is too good, you have fallen into the 'reputation trap' and will probably swim a slow time - and yet if you pay no attention to it at all during the race, it will make no difference at all. If you have a reputation yourself, by the way, this is great news, because many competitors are quite intimidated by reputations and will often swim badly against you in meets. This is a fact! It even happens at the very peak of the swimming world. I read a few days ago that Lenny Krayzelburg, the world champion 50m,100m and 200m backstroke titleholder, said that he wanted to instill in his rivals the mentality that they were 'racing for second place, and that when it came to major events like the Olympic games, the gold medal was already gone'. This is very clever thinking, despite the fact that it has apparently brought some strong words in reply from other swimmers (who say they refuse to swim for second place).

Schubert was also named the 1999 American Swimming Coaches Association Co-Coach of the Year (Stanford's Richard Quick was the other recipient this year) and the 1999 United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year. His ASCA honor is his fifth such award from the organization, more than any other coach. Schubert earned the U.S. Swimming Coach of the Year award, recently renamed the Doc Councilman Award, in recognition of the remarkable number of USC and Trojan Club swimmers that have had success on the national and international swimming scene. Schubert, a 1996 International Swimming Hall of Fame inductee, had a Hall of Fame year in 1999, placing 12 swimmers on international teams. His swimmers made their presence felt at all levels. Lenny Krayzelburg earned his U.S. Swimmer of the Year honor at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships, shattering both the 100m and 200m backstroke world records, becoming the first American male to break two world records in two different events in 16 years. He also broke the 50m back world mark in a time trial.
