Georgia Head Coach Jack Bauerle
"We're excited about hosting this meet. Some of you remember our old pool, but we've come a long way. We're excited because this is one of those times when the meet is really up for grabs. There are a lot of teams that have a shot at winning it all. "I'm really happy to show off our facility and anxious to swim in front of the Athens crowd. It's going to be a knock-down, drag-out war this weekend. I'm looking forward to a great meet. It might go down to the very last event. "I have little different view going into this year but I still think that the champion is the champion, no matter. I feel like we've had some successes, but it's been a crazy for all us. We had some luck against Stanford at the time when maybe they weren't as prepared and at the same token we went down and lost at SMU. Because of that you can look around and say that anything can happen at any given time. "We're a little bit more hunted than we have been before but that's OK. That's what we've been trying to earn. We feel privileged to be here with these team and for me personally to be here with these coaches. We've used some of these programs as our benchmark for success, so we're going to enjoy the ride while we're here. We're going to compete hard and race hard and wherever that leaves us is fine. We're just happy to be part of the fray. Last year we got a little closer and we started thinking in other directions which is good. Last year made us look and see that we have a chance at doing something that we've always dreamed of doing."

More NEWS Day Three. Thompson makes history again (Day Two) Jenny Thompson posted the fourth-fastest performance ever in the 100-meter butterfly with a winning time of 58.36 here at the U.S. Open. In the morning prelims, Thompson broke another long-standing Mary T. Meagher record, swimming a 59.80, which dropped Meagher's 1985 meet record. Prior to finals, Meagher made a surprise appearance to give Thompson with a gift and say a few words in front of the San Antonio audience. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    December 21, 2000
    KOWAL SELECTED NCAA TOP VIII
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.Kristy Kowal, a former Georgia swimmer and silver medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games, has been named a recipient of the NCAA Today1s Top VIII Award as announced by the NCAA. The award honors eight distinguished student-athletes from the preceding calendar year for achievement in athletics, achievement in academics, character and leadership.
"We could not be more proud of Kristy," Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said, "as she has worked hard to become the consummate student-athlete during her stay at Georgia. She is a very talented young lady in the classroom and in the pool, but her success has been predicated on old-fashion hard work."
Kowal marks the fourth consecutive year that a student-athlete from Georgia has been a winner of the Top VIII Award and the fifth recipient overall. Terry Hoage, who was a two-time All-American in football, was Georgia's first winner in January of 1984 when the award was NCAA Top VI, but it was 13 years later before the Bulldogs claimed winner No. 2 in swimmer Lisa Coole in 1997. Football player Matt Stinchcomb followed in 1998, and track and field star Debbie Ferguson was honored last year.
"I am proud of her for bringing this much honor and glory to Georgia," Bauerle said. "It means a lot to all of us in the athletic program."
