Women swimmers seek last goal
Arizona Daily Wildcat
By Brian Penso Arizona Daily Wildcat,
March 9, 2000 Talk about this story Fresh off a Pacific 10 Conference Championship, the No. 2 Arizona women's swimming and diving team travels to Indianapolis next week seeking its first-ever national title. "To win the NCAA's we are going to have to do what we have been doing, and more," freshman Beth Botsford said. "This is what it comes down to and we have to put it all together at once and just swim." For the Wildcats, who finished second in the country in 1988, 15 swimmers qualified for the tournament beginning next Thursday. That number is second only to top-ranked Georgia. Earlier this season in Tucson, the Wildcats lost to the Bulldogs 165-135 at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. In the meet, Botsford won the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events, while sophomore Erin Vogt took the 200 butterfly. "We were fortunate that day," Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said last night. "I think we caught them in a little bit of a down cycle." UA freshman Amanda Beard and UGA senior Kristy Kowal were the focus of the meet's featured matchup, as Kowal defeated Beard in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

AUBURN SWIMMING AND DIVING SWEEP FLORIDA Jan. 25, 2002
GAINESVILLE, Fla. In their final dual meet of the season, the No. 2 Auburn men and the No. 4 Auburn women defeated No. 14 and No. 8 Florida keeping both Tigers’ season records perfect heading into the Southeastern Conference Championships. The AU women defeated the Florida Gators 130.5 - 110.5 and the men captured a 153-90 win over the Gators. ''Overall, I was very pleased with the women’s performance,'' head coach David Marsh said. ''Heather Kemp has made substantial improvements and our sprints are really coming around. I think that with Becky (Short) and Eileen (Coparropa) are a 1-2 punch not just at dual meets, but at the NCAA level as well. ''The men were kind of hot and cold tonight. I was pleased overall, but we relaxed in some races. The IMers were key tonight going 1-2-3 and the distance free is really leading the way for us. Kirk Hampleman has been a consistent senior leader and I really think our 400 free relay tonight was impressive. It was the best in-season time in six or seven years.'' The women started off strong taking first and second in the 400-yard medley relay with the team of Kirsty Coventry, Laura Swander, Demerae Christianson and Cassidy Maxwell taking first, with Auburn’s fastest time of the year (3:42.74), and Taylor Spivey, Kelly Jones, Margaret Hoelzer and Eileen Coparropa finishing second (3:44.88).

Saturday, March 18, 2000 Swimming Georgia swimmers extend their lead at women's championships Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS Georgia won three events, highlighted by Kristy Kowal's American record in the 100-meter breaststroke, to increase its lead Friday night in the women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The defending champion Bulldogs have 336.5 points heading into Saturday's windup. Arizona was second with 299 and Stanford third with 245. The night opened with two world records in the 200-meter medley relay. California's time of 1 minute, 49.23 seconds bettered the mark of 1:49.47 set by Sweden in 1999, although it cannot be ratified because not all four swimmers are of the same nationality.
