Friday's competition is slated to begin at 6 p.m. and will be scored. The two teams will meet again on Saturday at noon in an exhibition meet. TEXAS IN THE RANKINGS: Texas remained the top-ranked team in the nation in the latest CSCAA poll that was released on Nov. 12. The Longhorns secured seven first-place votes for a total of 199 points. Stanford is ranked second with 190 points, while Auburn rounds out the top three with 187 points. Texas originally opened the season as the top-ranked squad after receiving four first-place votes.

1999 MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONS
They came, they fought, they conquered. With a third-place ranking going into the 1999 NCAA Championships, the Tigers went to the IU Natatorium on the prowl, looking to bring the NCAA title back to the Plains. Finishing second in 1998 in their home pool left a sour taste in the mouth of the Auburn men and made them hungry for victory. However, with no divers available, Auburn was going to have to fight for every point they earned. Having at least 39 teams and 250 athletes entered into the competition, AU knew that this would be no easy triumph. Head coach David Marsh believed the key to Auburn’s success would rely on the team leaders taking charge as well as the freshman stepping up to contribute to the team. Auburn made their presence known early as the Tigers swam a time of 1:16.50 in the 200 free relay during prelims, setting a U.S. Open, NCAA and NCAA meet record. That energy and enthusiasm set a pace that would catapult the Tigers through the rest of the meet. "On the first day, our goal wasn’t necessarily to set a record. Time wasn’t the issue, we just wanted to get our hand on the wall first and get our 40 points," team captain Aaron Ciarla said. "We were just focusing on one session at a time. We just went out gunning for it."

The only question left was whether or not they would set the record for most points scored in a meet.
The Longhorns ran away with the title, scoring 597.5 points for their eighth national championship, but their total was 34.5 points short of the record set in 1994 by Stanford.
Texas became the first team to win back-to-back titles since 1995.
Auburn, which had been fighting for a spot in the top five, fell to seventh when swimmer Andrew Haidinyak failed to show for his prelim in the 200-yard butterfly Saturday morning.
Haidinyak was penalized for delaying the contest and the Tigers lost the 97 points he had earned for them on the first two days. With the points Auburn would have finished third.
As was the case on the first two nights of the meet, the record books were in serious danger in the final session. In all, nine records were broken, with five of them falling on the final night.
In addition, the three-day crowd of 10,606 for all sessions was the second largest behind the 1986 meet held in Indianapolis.

Wilkens Leads Stanford to NCAA Title
Stanford, behind three wins from senior captain Tom Wilkens, captured the team title at the 75th Annual NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center. The Cardinal scored 599 points in the three day competition to beat host Auburn (394.5) and Texas (362.5). Rounding out the top ten teams were Tennessee (233), Southern California (220), Arizona (185), Georgia (175.5), California (175), Southern Methodist (155.5) and Arizona State (143). Wilkens, a political science major, led a one-two Stanford finish in the 200 breaststroke to add to his two individual medley titles. Later in the program, junior Matthew Pierce and freshman Steven Brown also finished one-two for the Cardinal in the 200 butterfly. Stanford capped off the meet with a narrow win over Texas in the 400 freestyle relay. Skip Kenney, who has now coached 7 Stanford teams to the NCAA title, was proud of the fact that his swimmers managed to make the championship final in all 18 swimming events. None of his current athletes had ever won a team title. Kenney was named Swimming Coach of the Year. Arizona's Ryk Neethling also won three events (200-500-1650 freestyles); his 14:32.50 in the 1650 was the second fastest ever after Tom Dolan's NCAA record 14:29.31 from 1995. The sophomore from South Africa joins an elite list of 200-500-1650 triple winners that includes Iowa's Artur Wojdat (1991), USC's Roy Saari (1965-66), and Washington's Jack Medica (1934-35-36).
