Colombia's Valderrama denies comeback
Posted: Tuesday January 6, 2004 1:30PM; Updated: Tuesday January 6, 2004 1:30PM
BOGOTA, Colombia (Reuters) Former Colombia captain Carlos Valderrama has denied reports of a comeback with his hometown club Union Magdalena, adding that he had retired for good at the age of 41. Magdalena coach Eduardo Retat said on Friday that Valderrama, famous for his deft ball control and wild mop of yellow hair, had signed up for the club where he began his career. "I have quit soccer. I have turned the page," Valderrama, nicknamed "El Pibe" (The Boy), told a news conference on Tuesday. His comments ended a comeback mystery after he failed to show up on Monday for a scheduled training session. Valderrama said he had received an offer from the club, but had turned it down. The Colombian played at the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups and was voted South American player the year in 1987 and 1993. In 1993, he led his country to one of their greatest victories, a 5-0 thrashing of an astonished Argentina in Buenos Aires. He retired in April 2003.

Known as “El Pibe” (the kid), Carlos Valderrama is easy recognizable with his big curly blonde hair and all his jewelry. He was an accurate passer of the ball and a playmaker of finest caliber. He is also one of very few players to have captained his country in three World Cups. His biggest World Cup moment was when he dribbled past several players and delivered a pinpoint pass to teammate Rincon who scored the necessary equalizer three minutes into injurytime against eventual winners West Germany in 1990. That goal meant Colombia qualified to the second round.

History
When the 1994 World Cup tournament was awarded to the United States, US Soccer promised to help establish a Division I outdoor soccer league as soon as possible after the tournament ended. World Cup USA Chairman Alan I. Rothenberg announced plans for Major League Soccer (MLS) on Dec. 17, 1993. Twenty-two cities submitted bids for teams. In October of 1995, it was announced that MLS would begin play in March of 1996 with ten teams: the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D. C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Clash, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion were added as expansion teams in 1998. The MLS originally had two conferences, but was reorganized into three divisions, with four teams each, in 2000. However, the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny were dropped before the 2002 season, and the league went back to the two-conference format. The MLS did away with the penalty shootout in 2000. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods. If the score is still tied, that's the final result.

CARLOS VALDERRAMA
Colombia ) The most famous Colombian player and a regular star performer in the MSL where he is noted for his assists. That is the main feature of his game and the cause of the greatness that has seen him hailed as one of the best players in the world during the past ten years. A former South American Player of the Year knee injuries have meant he is much slower than in the past but he uses possession very well and dictates the play for the Colombian side. Every passing moves comes through him and he regularly sets up goals for players around him but rarely finishes himself. His freekicks are not as dangerous as they once were.

List Names the 100 Greatest Living Soccer Players in the World
DENVER, CO (03-04-04)- In association with its centennial celebration, FIFA, the world soccer governing body, released its list of the 100 Greatest Living Soccer Players today with former Rapids midfielder Carlos Valderrama making the list. The Colombian midfield maestro was known equally for his precision passing and his floppy orange hair. "El Pibe" as he was known by the world, played the final year and a half of his career with the Rapids after being traded to the club from Tampa Bay in June 2001. In 29 career games with the club, he tallied one goal and 19 assists for 21 points. Sixteen of his 19 assists came in his final MLS season when he set a single-season team record. Valderrama played in each of the first seven seasons of MLS and is the league's all-time leader in assists with 114. In 2000, Valderrama, who was capped 111 times by Colombia, notched a single-season record with 26 assists, seven more than the previous record of 19, which he had set in 1996. He is one of five former or current MLS players to have been named to the list, joining Hong Myung Bo (Korea), Lothar Matthaus (Germany), Hugo Sanchez (Mexico) and Hristo Stoitchkov (Bulgaria).
