As a youth, he helped the former Yugoslavia win the World Youth Championship in 1987. He made his first international appearance for Yugoslavia in 1990. Suker led the 1998 World Cup in scoring, as Croatia captured third place in the tournament. As a Real Madrid player, he won the Spanish League title in 1997, the Spanish Super Cup, the Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup in 1998. Suker’s play in the 1998 World Cup ensures that the Croatian squad will not be overlooked this time around.

Anelka warns Real against loan swap deal
REAL MADRID’S unsettled French striker Nicolas Anelka has warned the Spanish giants he will perform another disappearing act if they try to send him out on loan.
The 20 year old former Arsenal striker has yet to score since his controversial £23m transfer last summer and Real are reported to be looking at a loan swap deal with Zinedine Zidane of Juventus.
‘‘If they want to sell me they had better tell me straight away. If they loan me out I’ll not return, that much is clear,’’ said Anelka. ‘‘The moment they have no confidence in me I’ll be off — there’s no point staying around.’’
Anelka only managed to get his move to Real after refusing to return to Highbury last summer. He almost moved to Italy but insisted he preferred Spain.
‘‘I don’t want to go to Juve,’’ said Anelka. ‘‘It’s not for them to decide but for me. I have not come here to muddy the waters but to play for Real Madrid.’’ Anelka signed a seven year deal with Real but has had a nightmare start in a struggling side, failing to find the net.
He recently complained that the team’s way of playing under Welsh coach John Toshack did not suit his game. ‘‘I am not scoring and on top of that I am not playing in the right position,’’ added Anelka.

Gunners take plenty of flack from Coventry
by John Curtis
Coventry City 3 Arsenal 2
COVENTRY’S veteran midfield duo Gary McAllister and Carlton Palmer turned back the clock to inspire the Sky Blues to a thrilling 3-2 win over high-riding Arsenal at Highfield Road.
Evergreen McAllister put Gordon Strachan’s side in front and though Mustapha Hadji’s superb curling strike looked to have put the Midlanders in command they could never rest easily with Fredrik Ljungberg and Davor Suker hitting back after Palmer had initiated Robbie Keane’s clincher.
Former England player Palmer said: ‘‘I don’t subscribe to this age theory if you look after yourself you can play well into your 30s. We knew it was going to be a difficult game and it was a great result for us.
‘‘We thought their last goal was offside and it put us under pressure but we held on.’’
McAllister, who turned 35 on Christmas Day, added: ‘‘I’m enjoying an Indian summer. For us to do well we have to win at Highfield Road and that’s what we have done here.
‘‘Arsenal will be disappointed and they went right to the final wire but this victory should give us confidence.

WORLD CUP 2002 IRELAND TEAMS FIXTURES HISTORY
Vintage of ’98 hard to replace CROATIA PROFILE: After finishing third in France ’98, Croatia will need to strike the right balance between youth and experience to sparkle in the Orient, writes Paul Doyle One thing is clear: do not judge Croatia's ability by their performances in friendlies. Manager Mirko Jozic will no doubt arrange a stack of them before next summer, but the chances of any of his players taking them seriously are roughly the same as the chances of Robert Prosinecki guiding Portsmouth to the Premiership title. Prosinecki is still a central schemer for his national team, as is Alen Boksic (right). The presence of such stars at glum English clubs such as Portsmouth and Middlesborugh may be incongruous, but there is nothing odd about their place in Jozic's team. And just to prove youth is no substitute for class, it was Boksic who bagged qualification with the crucial winner against Belgium (he also notched the goal that sealed qualification for France '98, but injury meant he missed out on Croatia's glorious expedition in the Finals).

CROATIA
May 15 2002 Davor Sukor Picture: AFP Few countries have had as dazzling a World Cup debut as Croatia, which emerged as the surprise third-place finisher in 1998, ousting Germany 3-0 to advance to the semi-finals where it lost 2-1 to eventual champion France. Now, on the eve of their nation's second World Cup appearance, Croatian fans are grappling with the painful reality that this year's squad is simply not the same as the team that brought home so much glory four years ago. Time and injury have exacted a harsh toll. Some stars of World Cup '98, such as Igor Stimac, have retired. Midfielder Robert Prosinecki, 33, and Davor Suker, 33, who won the Golden Boot as the leading scorer of World Cup '98, are in the waning days of once-brilliant careers. But the biggest setback has been an ankle injury to 24-year-old Igor Tudor - at 193 centimetres, the pillar of Croatia's defence. "He was and is one of our key players," coach Mirko Jozic said recently.

Davor Suker : The tournament's top goal scorer four years ago in France, Suker lifted Croatia to a miraculous third-place finish on the strength of his six goals. Suker will likely play a deep-lying forward position this year as opposed to an outright striker like he did in 1998.
Alen Boksic : Although his international record doesn't show it, Boksic is a striker of world-class ability. He demonstrates excellent ball control, possesses a blistering shot and is technically skilled. A big part of Croatia's attack. Robert Kovac : Rated among the best defenders in the world, Kovac combines speed and sparking tackling skills, and he isn't afraid to push forward and join the attack. With Igor Tudor out, it'll be up to Kovac to anchor Croatia's defence.

XVI World Cup Championship Most football fans were outraged when France were crowned as World Champions in 1998. As they became the seventh nation to ever win the trophy, many questioned how much home advantage had to do with their success. Few unbiased experts admitted the superb defensive and midfield work, which the French displayed. Even their bald keeper Barthez made very few mistakes permitting a total of two goals in seven games. Zidane, Petit, Djorkaeff, and Lizarazu were all World-class footballers, who deserved winning the Cup. At that time they were generally unproven and the public were mostly displeased by their very first World Cup title. Croatia was the surprise of the tournament, with a run similar to another Balkan country, Bulgaria, from four years ago.

Graham didn't rate Robbie, court is told - February 15, 2001
Tottenham manager George Graham had the chance to buy Robbie Keane, but didn't rate him highly enough, the English High Court was told yesterday! Graham believed Keane would struggle to establish himself in the Spurs first team, according to Director of Football David Pleat. Pleat was giving evidence in the Alan Sugar libel case in which the jury must essentially decide whether Tottenham's lack of success was due to former owner Sugar or the club's managers. He told the court that Graham had also spurned the chance to sign Croatian striker Davor Suker and England midfielder Kieron Dyer. "I believed Robbie Keane was a top, top, top striker but the manager didn't want to make an offer. He didn't consider he wanted to purchase Keane," Pleat testified. "I thought he was one of the few outstanding young players in Britain but the manager decided not to buy him because he wasn't certain he would be a regular first-team striker." Arsenal bought Suker, while Dyer moved from Ipswich to Newcastle for £6.5 million. Republic of Ireland striker Keane went from Wolves to Coventry for a similar fee before moving on to Inter Milan for £12 million and then back to Leeds for a further £12.5 million within the space of two seasons! back to Irish abroad stories back to main headlines
