Englands Odds Improve, But Violence Disprupts Cup Spirit
England opened their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over Tunisia on Monday to justify coach Glenn Hoddle’s belief that they are potential winners of the trophy. Goals at the end of each half from striker and captain Alan Shearer and attacking midfielder Paul Scholes reflected England’s supremacy in a game they could, and perhaps should, have won more convincingly. The match, at least for a time, diverted attention from the violent scenes of hooliganism which scarred the weekend, although trouble flared again on the beach where fans were watching on a giant screen. Shearer, performing as expected of such a highly-rated leader of the attack, headed in his 19th goal in 40 internationals after 42 minutes. Scholes, an inspired choice to succeed the unfit Paul Gascoigne swerved home a 20-metre shot in the final minute. Tunisia, in the finals for the first time in 20 years, rarely threatened an upset, but kept England frustrated for periods.

Scholes sees red as England draw
Sapa-AFP
London England - Sweden
PAUL Scholes became the first England player to be sent off at Wembley stadium yesterday as Kevin Keegan's side were held to a draw by Sweden in their Group 5 European Championship qualifier. Scholes, who scored a hat-trick on his last Wembley appearance - in March against Poland - saw red for two desperately late challenges, leaving a disjointed-looking England to play almost the entire second half with 10 men. Sweden created all the best chances, the outstanding Fredrik Ljungberg striking the bar with a free-kick and creating several other clear openings which his team-mates squandered. The result means unbeaten Sweden, with 13 points from five games, are firmly on course to clinch top spot - and an automatic qualification for Euro 2000. England have eight points, one fewer than Poland, whom they have still to visit, and can only hope to qualify via the playoffs - if they finish second in the group.

IRELAND SPORT WORLD ... ENTERTAINMENT Soccer: Eriksson salutes Scholes' England spirit
    6:58:30 PM
Sven-Goran Eriksson was impressed to see Paul Scholes arrive late at night at the team hotel after casting doubts on his chances of featuring against Spain.
With the midfielder's health holding the key to the Swede's first starting line-up and tactics, he declared that Scholes' desperation to play exemplified the attitude he was looking for from his first England team.
Scholes may have been suffering from gastroenteritis, with Eriksson forecasting on Monday night that he was unlikely to play.
However, he still travelled down from Manchester later that night and took part in Tuesday's training session.
"Congratulations to him, that shows he really wants to be here. He may not have been 100 per cent but I hope that he will be. If nothing more happens then he will play," said Eriksson.
"I am extremely happy that he came late on Monday evening. He wanted to be here even if he wasn't in a perfect condition. I'd love to have 25 players like him in the squad. "That is a great attitude. Even though he woke up not feeling well, could not eat and it's a friendly, he still wanted to come. That's a very good professional. I like that."

PAUL SCHOLES scored twice in the last nine minutes to earn Manchester United a hard fought victory against battling Panathinaikos in the Champions League at Old Trafford.
Panathinaikos were on course for a surprise draw in this opening Group A second phase game when the skilful Giorgios Karagounis equalised Teddy Sheringham’s opener in the 63rd minute.
But with time running out, Scholes restored United’s lead in the 81st minute before he sealed the three points with a delightful chip in the final minute.
Fabien Barthez spared Manchester United’s blushes in the first half when he made three crucial saves to deny Panathinaikos.
The French international goalkeeper reacted swiftly to thwart Nikos Liberopoulos twice.
In between those stops he blocked a shot from Krzysztof Warzycha, as United struggled to find their stride against the Greek side.
After Alex Ferguson had insisted before the match that everyone was fit, Ryan Giggs was absent, presumably because of the recurring problems with his hamstring.
Mickael Silvestre replaced the experienced Denis Irwin in another surprise move in defence.

Paul Scholes, a member of the English national team/AFP When soccer star Paul Scholes, a member of the English national team and participant in the 2002 World Cup, referred to Korea as a ¡°stupid country,¡± he got a deluge of responses from Korean Internet users. Scholes, who plays for Britain¡¯s famous team, Manchester United, made the statement while talking about France in an interview to run in next month¡¯s edition of the English soccer magazine ¡°FourFourTwo.¡± He said that even though France did not achieve much during the last World Cup, it was nothing but a momentary lapse in a ¡°stupid country¡± that should never have held a World Cup in the first place. France, the 1998 World Cup champions, gave a very poor showing in Korea during the first round of the 2002 World Cup with 2 losses and a draw. Internet users have responded with posts criticizing Scholes on major Korean football websites such as Korean Football Association and Soccerline.

That is true, especcialy lately ofcourse, also with bad comments in the press. But whether you like him or not, he is the most important player for Man U. Giggs is great, but not on a decisive position. He can be replaced.
