Struggling Denmark must be wary of Saudi
By Alan Baldwin, Reuters
PETER Schmeichel, probably Europe’s finest goalkeeper, would be wise to remember Belgium’s fate when Denmark play Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener tomorrow. Four years ago, at a World Cup that Denmark failed to qualify for, the Saudis reached the second round after upsetting the Belgians with a goal by Saeed Al-Owairan that is rated as one of the finest ever at the finals. The man is back again, with his head shaven Ronaldo-style, to try and add to the reputation created by his weaving run on goal at USA ’94. His partnership with Sami Al-Jaber up front is well-tested and potentially a match-winner against any team. Schmeichel, Manchester United’s giant between the posts, represents the rock in an otherwise unsteady Danish side and much could depend on how fully he has recovered from a long-standing back injury and thigh problem. The Danes, surprise European champions in 1992, come to Lens in northern France with one of the worst warm-up records of any of the 32 countries in the competition.

Only three big stars, but Danes confident of first-round success
DEFENSIVELY sound Denmark are cautiously optimistic about their chances in France this summer. Contesting their second World Cup finals, the Danes have been given an easy first round draw, placed with hosts France, South Africa and Saudi Arabia in group C. It is a section from which the 1992 European champs would hope to reach the second round, though their Swedish coach, Bo Johansson, warns against complacency. "We must not believe Saudi Arabia are a pushover. All three are technical teams. They like to build their game through the midfield." Johansson has clear ideas about who can win the most popular sporting event in the world. "Brazil and Germany are the favourites," he said, identifying hosts France, Spain, England, the Netherlands and Italy as outsiders. Midfielder Allan Nielsen remains confident his side can finish at least second in their group and qualify for the second round. "We won't underestimate the opposition but have a strong belief we can put on a good display. We

Goalkeepers: Soccer's unfortunate necessity.
(Friday, April 18, 2003) The Mad Brit is not too keen on goalkeepers. A goalie broke his leg once. The Mad Brit had already put two beauties in the net and was just about to get his third for a 6-2 win when Attila the Hun on a bad hair day, came running out with his razor-sharp, steel studs looking for blood. Well you get the drift. It was nasty. Everyone heard the crunch and suspected the worst. The MB was in pain; in shock, and begging for a good cuppa tea, as it was a cold day and the field was muddy. The goalie never said sorry, in fact he smiled with a kind of Saddam Hussein grin after showing Sean Penn the door. The ambulance had to climb a steep hill to pick up the wounded Brit who faced six bleak months before he could kick a ball again. His wife threatened to divorce him if he ever played again. Do you know how difficult the simplest activities are with a full cast on your leg? While in surgery it was discovered that the right leg had been fractured once and healed by itself. Well, the MB remembered that kick too. It took place on some shabby field in a tough area of Aston in the Midlands, when some thug-looking skinhead, posing as defender put him out of action just after he'd had a try-out for the Warwickshire Boys Club's team.

DENIS, France (CNN/SI) Kiss Nigeria goodbye, and while you're at it hold the door open for any stray African nations still trying to get out of France. Olympic champion Nigeria became the last of five African nations to be eliminated from the World Cup when it was routed by Denmark 4-1 Sunday, sending the Danes into the quarterfinals at the World Cup. This one was over early and got ugly late. Peter Moller scored on nearly his first touch of the tournament and Denmark had a pair of goals in the first 12 minutes. "It is not about preparation and tactics," Denmark coach Bo Johansson said when asked about inserting Moller in the lineup. "It is about players who suddenly find their way of playing." The Danes found it after a mediocre opening-round performance that saw them advance mainly because they were in a group with weaklings South Africa and Saudi Arabia "We're on a high, definitely a high," said goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who kept Nigeria's ballyhooed attack at bay.

The Danes were underdogs before the match started but Moller capitalized with a blast from the edge of the penalty area in the third minute off a pass from midfielder Michael Laudrup. Up 1-0, Denmark continued to pressure the unsettled Nigerians and just nine minutes later, Brian Laudrup made it 2-0 after following up a rebound off a save by goalkeeper Peter Rufai on Moller's free kick. With Nigeria attempting a comeback, Denmark played solid at the back behind the presence of goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. After the break, substitute Ebbe Sand caught the Nigerian defense off guard and netted the third goal in the 59th minute on an assist from Michael Laudrup. Thomas Helveg put the game out of reach in the 76th minute with Martin Jorgensen contributing with the assist.

In my opinion, Milan, Manchester United and Bayern Munich have done very well at the transfer market. The signings they´ve made, and the price they´ve paid for some (Rivaldo for free, what a great deal), tip them to make much better campaigns than what they did last season. Shelbourne fail to capitalise on chances
Shelbourne
Neuchatel Zamax
SHELBOURNE will go to Switzerland for the second leg of their Intertoto Cup tie against Neuchatel Zamax next Sunday with the hopes of advancement in the competition still very much alive following their scoreless draw at Tolka Park.
However, had the Reds strikers not been completely out of touch with their finishing yesterday, then Shels could easily have the 2-3 goal advantage that their performance at Tolka certainly deserved going into the second leg.
After a very indifferent opening 20 minute spell, when there was hardly an incident of note, Shelbourne began to find their touch and as a result, the game opened up quite considerably. Up to that point, the Swiss visitors had looked the better side but despite their advantage in possession, their first real effort on goal did not come until 27 minutes when a powerful drive from central defender, Steven Keller, was saved low down by the new Shelbourne goalkeeper, Steve Williams.
Indeed, eventhough, Zamax did have spells in the game in which they dominated the trend of play, this really was the only occasion in the entire game when Shelbourne's goalkeeper really got anything serious to defend against.

United punish misfiring Italians
Inter Milan 1
Manchester United 1
(United win on aggregate 3-1)
PAUL SCHOLES was Manchester United's flame-haired supersub on a night of tingling European tension. Scholes came off the bench 14 minutes from the end of this frantic tie to score the vital goal two minutes from time which takes United into the semi-finals of the European Champions' League. And it came just at the right moment as Inter threatened to take the tie into extra-time. But that would have been unjust on United who passed surely the club's greatest test of nerve in the oppressive fervour of the San Siro stadium.
United may not have recorded their first win on Italian soil, but they did overcome all the dirty tricks that the Italians could throw at them on a night of high drama.
Yes, they lived on their nerves and their wits, and it took a string of fabulous saves from Peter Schmeichel to ensure the draw.
The Milanese had come hoping the return of Ronaldo, who made only his second start in two months, would rescue a season which was dying on its feet - out of their domestic cup, languishing eighth in Serie A and torn apart by in-fighting.
