    - WHO'S WHO Friday, August 16, 2002 Niall Quinn Club: Sunderland Shirt Number: Position: Forward Date of Birth: August 15, 1966 Birthplace: Dublin, Republic of Ireland Height:
Profile: The 'Mighty Quinn' continued to defy all his critics during 1999/2000 with a series of match-winning performances with and without Kevin Phillips. Made his League debut for Arsenal in 1985 but lost his place to Alan Smith before moving to Manchester City for £800,000 in 1990. He became a real favourite at Maine Road under the stewardship of Peter Reid. After being hit by injury during the latter part of his City career he linked up with Reid at Sunderland on the eve of the 1996/97 season, and sadly missed most of the campaign with injury. He recovered from this blow to defy those who thought his career was over by leading the club to the Play-off final in 1997/98 and into the Premiership in 1999/2000. Was voted Sunderland and North East Sportswriters' Player of the Year award in 1999 after scoring 21 goals in his partnership with the free-scoring Phillips. A back problem, plus of course his age, curtailed his involvement increasingly throughout 2000 to 2002. Had a testimonial year in 2001/02 - and gave every penny away to charity. A superb gesture.

He worked well in tandem with Kevin Phillips. Quinn's aerial ability was the perfect foil for Phillips' pace. Although Phillips scored most of the goals in the partnership, Quinn weighed in with his fair share.Quinn scored the first goal at the Stadium of Light, netting in the 3-1 win against his old club Manchester City in August 1998.Always a popular player, Quinn never really made the grade at Highbury, before doing much to keep Manchester City afloat during the first half of the 1990's.The Dublin-born striker continues to represent his country. Six more games for the Republic of Ireland in 1998/99 brought his tally up to almost 70.He continues to enjoy international success but at domestic level his partnership alongside Kevin Phillips is explosive. In over twenty years in the Premiership, Quinn has tallied more than 140 goals. Four years after joining Arsenal in 1983, he helped lead the Gunners to the league title. In 1989 he moved to Manchester City, where he continued until 1998, before moving to Sunderland. Injuries forced him to miss the 1994 World Cup and he is eager to get back in what is most likely his final international tournament.

Quinn's continuing involvement in the Republic of Ireland set-up is crucial for Mick McCarthy. Not alone can he nurse Robbie Keane through the terrors of international football - not much work there - but he still has a lot to offer as a goalscorer and a platform. Some out there might feel that his Irish career has been less than convincing, that he was a target man for Big Jack and not much else. But Quinn is a survivor above everything else and he is currently playing the best football of his life. He'll be around for a while yet! Niall Quinn: One of the game's good guys
    By Mike Salter - November 17, 2002
Mike Salter pays tribute to recently retired Sunderland and Republic of Ireland striker Niall Quinn - a true gentlemen of the game. When Roy Keane professes unequivocal respect for a man who is (a) a former Manchester City player, and (b) one of the Irish squad which publicly supported erstwhile Republic manager Mick McCarthy during his infamous contretemps with Keane just prior to the recent World Cup, it's a fair bet that the said gentleman - an apt word, that - is universally admired. I refer, of course, to Niall Quinn, recently retired from league football after a career spanning nearly seventeen years. There are many who would attest to his gentlemanly qualities; he shares his soft-spoken, modest Irish manner with such compatriots (and Arsenal alumni) as Liam Brady and David O'Leary. One of the abiding memories of Quinn, his furious gesticulating by the touchline as his Manchester City team-mates, acting on misinformation, were playing out a draw that doomed them to relegation, was notable mainly for its sheer incongruity. Quinn was hardly ever to be seen in such intemperate spirits - off the field at least.

Quinner to miss Denmark ... and Clonmel! - February 2, 2001
Niall Quinn is almost certain to miss the Republic of Ireland's friendly against Denmark this month, after injuring his neck in Wednesday night's Premiership game between Sunderland and Manchester United. The Irish striker, who had already been labouring with a back injury, picked up the fresh damage in a clash with Mikael Silvestre after just 28 minutes of the game. Quinn spent a second night in hospital last night and is not expected to be discharged until layer today. He has been told to rest the injury for two to three weeks - and that makes him a doubtful starter for the Danish game. The injury also means that Quinn will definitely miss his visit to Clonmel this Sunday. The business syndicate of which the Irish striker is a member has bought a pub, The Local Bar, in the south Tipperary town and Quinn was due to be present at the official opening. But, as in the case of all neck and spinal column injuries, air travel is strictly banned. back to Irish abroad stories back to main headlines

    Sunderland Manchester United 1
Niall Quinn left the pitch after 28 minutes of a match in which referee Graham Poll flashed three red cards. And the Irish striker spent the night under observation in hospital after injuring his neck. It's another blow for Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy, who is already without Gary Kelly and probably Mark Kinsella for the friendly against Denmark and who is anxiously awaiting word on the extent of Dean Kiely's injury. To make matters worse for Sunderland, Quinn was injured in an incident in which he appeared to be fouled by Mikael Silvestre - but, to the fury of the Mackem fans, Poll awarded a free to United! International team-mate Kevin Kilbane replaced the injured Quinn and, after Andy Cole had put United ahead, the Irish winger almost pulled the game out of the fire - racing onto Phillips' through ball and bringing a magnificent save out of Fabian Barthez. back to Irish abroad stories back to main headlines

The lanky Sunderland striker's goal means that Ireland and Yugoslavia are level on nine points in Group 8 in the race to gain the automatic qualifying place at the top. Before 28,000 fans at Lansdowne Road, the Irish almost struck twice just before halftime. A shot by Mark Kinsella from eight yards struck goalkeeper Petar Milosevski and Gary Breen's looping header was cleared off the line by defender Goran Stavreski. Despite fielding the same lineup that tied 1-1 with Croatia on Saturday, the Macedonians threatened rarely, although Igor Nikolovski moved up from defense to firewide and Dzevdet Sainovski shot too high from 30 yards.

NEWS SPORT LOCAL NEWS Soccer: Magnificent Midway dazzle Derry side
    Midway United 5, Institute 1
MAGNIFICENT Midway. In the first round proper of the Harry Cavan Northern Ireland Youth Cup, the Meadow Estate side trashed Institute to the tune of 5-1.
And make no mistake the Irish league side, strong skilful and determined, travelled all the way from Derry supremely confident of victory.
But in abysmal conditions on a muddy, wind and rain-lashed Hen Run, the visitors were totally out-played, out-shot and most certainly out-fought by a truly brilliant performance from the team managed by the two Barry’s - Traynor and Gray.
Every Midway man was a star, every Midway man worked himself to the bone and United’s amazing result was in no way flattering.
Joint boss Barry Traynor was absolutely delighted and told the Democrat: “Brilliant: we have worked very hard in training recently and today we showed our fitness.”
And it was hard to argue against that. On a heavy, greasy pitch, the Midway effort was incredible. They chased, harried and worked tirelessly for each other. It was virtually impossible, and probably grossly unfair, to single anyone out. But central defender Niall Matthews, full back Aidan Mooney and left-sided midfielder Ruairi Byrne epitomised most what the team was about. The trio were superb, all tackling fearlessly and each always involved in the action.

    http://archives.tcm.ie/irishexaminer/1999/09/08/phead_261.htm
    Keane and Quinn in attack
MICK McCARTHY yesterday delayed naming his team for tonight’s European Championship qualifying tie in Malta because of injury concerns, but he has no doubts about his team’s tactics.
“We will play 4-4-2 with two wingers,” he said on the eve of a match Ireland must win to keep alive hopes of qualifying for Euro 2000, “and we will have Robbie Keane and Niall Quinn up front.”
Ireland must be positive against a Malta team still without a point as they approach their eighth and final match in the qualifying tournament. A win for Ireland and a win over Macedonia in Skopje next month will ensure Ireland of at least a play-off for the finals.
“We will have to have an air of caution about our approach because we cannot afford to let anything slip and let one of them sneak in the back door and score,” said McCarthy. “But we need goals, we need to win it and we will just have to do it.”
The injuries that have interfered with the training of Robbie Keane, Steve Staunton, Kenny Cunningham, Gary Breen and Mark Kinsella are all of a minor nature: their absence from some of the ‘five-a-sides’ has been purely a safety-first measure.
Keane referred to the back injury that complicated his preparations for the game against Croatia which helped make up McCarthy’s mind to leave him out of the team, and said: “I’m 100 fit and ready to play, but I’m not going to do any cartwheel if I do score because the shoulder is still a little sore.”
