North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame Inducts Four New Members The North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the 2000 Hall of Fame Inductees. Pat B. Hamilton, William T. "Bill" Holleman, George Edward "Eddie" Pope, II and Hank Steinbrecher were all admitted as new members on June 4, 2000 at the NCYSA Awards Luncheon and AGM, held in Greensboro. Pat B Hamilton Born and raised on a farm near Haskell, OK, Pat saw his first soccer game at the age of thirteen when German POW's played on the town's high school football field during World War II. He remembers thinking at the time that the players were crazy for letting a kicked ball hit them in the head and wondering whether that was the reason that Germany was losing the war. After completing graduate work in Microbiology and Biochemistry, Pat was employed in Albany, NY where a lot of ethnic soccer was played, Pouca, OK where no soccer played and later to the Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina, where he later joined the faculty of North Carolina State University. After a massive heart attack in 1971, Pat was told by doctors to get a weekend hobby and not to work seven days per week. He was assured that being involved in youth soccer administration would be non-stressful, non-demanding and enjoyable. In 1993, he retired from his position at NC State and currently holds the title of Professor Emeritus of Poultry Science. Continuing his research and writing while in retirement and also serving as a consultant on animal agriculture to governments of thirteen foreign countries, Pat has received fourteen national and international awards for his research.

M ONTHLY PRO TIP: Creating Triangles
February 2001
Brought to you by Williams F.C. and Bascome's Pro Soccer School The following diagram illustrates the importance of creating triangles on the field as a means of maintaining possession. During the February 4th friendly match between the US and Colombia, the Americans effectively made use of triangles in order to maintain possession and work the ball out of the back. Frame 1 Sensing pressure, Chris Armas (#14) lays the ball back to Eddie Pope (#23), who is about 5 to 10 yards outside the 18 yard box. Pope then promptly lays the ball out wide to Carlos Llamosa (#16) as he is pressured by the Colombian forward. The three players have formed a triangular formation in order to create ample options for their teammates. Frame 2 As the Colombian player confronts Llamosa, he lays the ball into Armas. Armas finds himself surrounded with very little space, so he lays the ball back, once again, to Pope. Again the triangle allows them to maintain possession.

The shutout for goalkeeper Jonny Walker, earning his first cap against Mexico, was the fourth in a row for the U.S. over Mexico and extended the team's overall shutout against the Tricolores to 434 minutes, a span of five games dating all the way back to 2001. Even more impressively, Mexico has not scored a goal against the U.S. in the United States in 573 minutes, a span of more than five years and six games.
The goal for the U.S. came in the 93rd minute on a free kick from Bobby Convey that was sent into the area and headed on frame by Taylor Twellman. Mexican goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez did well to make that stop, his impressive sixth save of the night, but couldn't keep the rebound from falling to Pope to score his sixth international goal.

Northwest Soccer Camp News 3/21/03 1:20 PM - Seattle U.S. Men To Play Venezuela In Seattle On March 29 CHICAGO (Friday, March 21, 2003) — The United States Men’s National Team will host Venezuela on March 29 at Seattle Seahawks Stadium in Seattle, following the decision of the Japanese Football Association to cancel their two-match U.S. tour. Kickoff for the first international soccer match at the new stadium is set for 1 p.m. PT, and will be broadcast live on ESPN2. Fans can follow the action live online via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics. “We are certainly disappointed by the decision of the Japanese Football Association,” said U.S. Soccer President S. Robert Contiguglia. “We provided their federation with ample evidence of the extensive security measures in place, and we continue to have every confidence that Seattle will provide a safe environment for the players and fans to enjoy an outstanding display of soccer. Sporting events around the country remain on schedule, and we look forward to welcoming Venezuela to Seattle.” Japan was scheduled to play Uruguay on March 26 at Qualcomm Stadium, then travel to meet the U.S. in Seattle three days later.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champion Chicago Fire send five players to California, the most alongside the Kansas City Wizards. Long time national team stalwart and Fire captain Chris Armas is joined by 2003 MLS MVP finalist Ante Razov. Leading the Wizards contingent is forward Josh Wolff, who has six goals in 20 appearances for the senior national team. Chris Klein had his best year for the MNT in 2003, recording his first three goals, including the game-winning goal in the 2-1 victory in Jamaica on Feb. 12. The Los Angeles Galaxy add local flavor to the camp, contributing Kevin Hartman, Danny Califf, and Chris Albright. In addition to McBride, Pope, and Wolff, two other camp members represented the United States during their quarterfinal run at the 2002 World Cup. Crew defender Frankie Hejduk has 53 appearances for the MNT during a seven-year career, and is one of two players to play every minute of the last two Gold Cups. Colorado Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni played 11 times for the U.S. in 2003, now with 25 international caps to his credit.

History
When the 1994 World Cup tournament was awarded to the United States, US Soccer promised to help establish a Division I outdoor soccer league as soon as possible after the tournament ended. World Cup USA Chairman Alan I. Rothenberg announced plans for Major League Soccer (MLS) on Dec. 17, 1993. Twenty-two cities submitted bids for teams. In October of 1995, it was announced that MLS would begin play in March of 1996 with ten teams: the Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D. C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Clash, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. The Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion were added as expansion teams in 1998. The MLS originally had two conferences, but was reorganized into three divisions, with four teams each, in 2000. However, the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny were dropped before the 2002 season, and the league went back to the two-conference format. The MLS did away with the penalty shootout in 2000. If a game is tied after regulation time, the teams play two five-minute overtime periods. If the score is still tied, that's the final result.
