September 1, 2000 The biggest news in Soccer this past month was not the U.S. vs. Barbados match, nor the elimination of D.C. United from the MLS playoffs (although this, too, was big!)! It was, however, the retirement from international soccer of Michelle Akers, arguably one of the greatest female soccer players of all time. Akers is undoubtedly a pillar and pioneer in Women’s Soccer. She has had an unquestionably storied career, and deserves great recognition for all that she has done for the game of soccer. Even more amazing is the fact that she has battled through so many injuries as well as her case of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. We wish Akers a speedy recovery, and we look forward to her debut in the WUSA. If an aging women’s team was ever a concern for anyone, there fears can be quelled. The women have enough quality players under the age of 25 to field an entire team good enough to compete with the best in the world. Lest we not forget that Lorrie Fair is only 22. As is Cindy Parlow, who at this point, may be considered the best U.S. striker. But even Parlow is being challenged by the likes of Christie Welsh and Susan Bush, two extremely talented strikers just waiting to break out. And Kate Sobrero is now considered a veteran at the tender age of 24. So the retirement of Akers should not be met with trepidation. The young American women are able and awaiting their chance. Thus, the prognosis for the future of the Women’s National Team looks healthy and bright!

WASHINGTON, DC – Rookie forward and No. 1 SuperDraft selection Alecko Eskandarian scored his first two career MLS goals as D.C. United (2-3-5, 11pts) netted a season high three goals in a 3-0 blanking of the Columbus Crew (4-4-3, 15pts) on Saturday night at RFK Stadium. United are now undefeated in three consecutive matches as goalkeeper Nick Rimando registered his League-leading fifth shutout of the season and third in succession.
"If last week was heaven, I don’t know what this is," said United Head Coach Ray Hudson. "It’s heroic. We knew they were going to throw massive obstacles and we wore them down. Opposing teams need to start looking at the character on our team, not the wins and losses. The performance of our warriors tonight was outstanding. Class is the word for tonight."

Sunday, October 19, 2003 COLUMBUS CREW 3 D.C. UNITED 2 CREW KEEP POST SEASON HOPES ALIVE
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Columbus Crew kept their postseason dreams alive Sunday afternoon, snatching a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory from D.C. United at RFK Stadium. Columbus forward Brian McBride scored two goals for the desperate visiting side, including the jaw-dropping overtime winner. D.C. defender Mike Petke sent the match into sudden death with his own spectacular goal in the closing seconds of regulation play.
The win keeps Columbus' bid for the final MLS Cup Playoff spot alive, as the Crew and United fight for the last postseason berth. Columbus must win their final match against the Chicago Fire next week and must also hope for a United loss at home to Kansas City in order to qualify. Anything less than a Crew win or a United win or draw will send D.C. United back to the postseason for the first time since their 1999 MLS Cup title run.
McBride came up with the dramatic golden goal for the Crew in the 100th minute, nodding an Alex Pineda Chacon cross between the post and a diving Doug Warren. Pineda Chacon, allowed space at the top of the penalty area, chipped a precision ball to McBride at the far post. The U.S. National Team fixture out-jumped defender Brandon Prideaux to make contact with the ball, slipping it past Warren to take the game and to keep the Crew's playoff hopes alive.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Saturday, April 22, 2000) There’s nothing like a good pair of shoes. Just ask MetroStars defender Mike Petke, who credited his new boots, even though it was his header in sudden death that provided a 3-2 decision over depleted D.C. United before 14,985 at RFK Stadium tonight. "I was in the right place at the right time," said Petke of his third Major League Soccer goal. "I think it was my Kappa shoes. I have worn them twice this season and we won each time over D.C. United. Those were also the MetroStars’ only two victories of the season and the New Jerseyans (2-4) climbed out of the Eastern Division basement past United (1-4). The Metros had not won at RFK since September 1997 and had dropped six straight to the Washingtonians entering this campaign. "This was a very important game for us tonight which we needed to win," MetroStars coach Octavio Zambrano said. "The guys played with heart and desire. The effort was great and it’s always nice to win on the road, especially against D.C. United. It was the second straight setback for the defending MLS champion United in extra time.

COLUMBUS, Ohio. (Thursday, June 7, 2001) The United States men battled a strong Ecuador to a spirited 0-0 draw at Columbus Crew Stadium this evening in the team’s last preparation match prior to three World Cup qualifying games between June 16 and July 1. The U.S. fielded a roster made up predominantly of foreign-based U.S. stars, including forwards Jovan Kirovski and Joe-Max Moore, who were making their first and second U.S. appearances of the year, respectively. The line-up also featured four players earning their first caps for the U.S., including Major League Soccer defenders in starter Mike Petke of the MetroStars and Pablo Mastroeni (Miami Fusion), as well as European-based midfielders Joe Enochs (VfL Osnabruck, Germany) and John Thorrington (Huddersfield Town, England). "It was good to see some of the new young faces and to get a cap for guys like Petke and Mastroeni, who I thought played well," U.S. coach Bruce Arena said. "Thorrington and Enochs made it four newcomers out there, so that was good to see. What we were really pleased with was that we got Moore, (John) O’Brien, Kirovski and our European players some fitness before the match next weekend. I think it was a good game for us to have in preparation for the matches later this month. It was a good game for a friendly, and I thought Ecuador was a great opponent out there."

Who's new: M Diego Walsh, Shavar Thomas, F Matt Taylor, GK William Hesmer, F Justin Detter. Who's gone: M Eric Quill, D Carey Talley, D Chris Brunt, F Wolde Harris. What's ahead: The Wizards lost Radosavljevic, last year's league MVP with 12 goals and 17 assists, when he broke his left leg and sprained his ankle last month. He is expected to be out at least four months, but the team said he is progressing well. Despite his age he'll be 41 this year his creative passing and deadly left foot will be missed. Wolff's health has also been an issue. The Wizards acquired him from Chicago in 2003 to provide scoring punch, but he played in only 13 games because of hamstring, knee, ankle and rib injuries. Klein scored three goals for the national team last year and has become one of MLS' best at his spot. The Wizards on Wednesday cut Harris, a midseason acquisition in 2003 who produced only one goal in 13 games.

Wet and Wild To the Finish at the 2002 MLS All-Star Game
Marco Etcheverry's Goal in the 72nd Minute Started the MLS Charge Story By: Richard Thomas/ Photos By: Sol Tucker Pointed Staff Washington, D.C There was only one way to describe the events of the 2002 MLS All-Star Game, very wet and very wild. What started out as a clear sweltering 90 degree day turned into a wild wet finish when a tropical like storm blew through RFK Stadium and dampened the game with a 58 minute delay that saw large bolts of lightning, hail and blinding sheets of rain. The storm was so severe that MLS officials considering calling off the game and sending fans home away from the unsafe conditions. "It was a very tough decision for all of us" said, MLS Commissioner Don Garber. We wanted to make sure that all of our players and coaches were safe. We had to make sure that everyone of the 31,096 fans here were safe. We knew that most fans were going to wait it out to see a great soccer game." One of the biggest dilemmas for the MLS staff was the National Broadcast on ABC and the half-time show by Paulina Rubio. Both were in jeopardy of losing their slots, but with Pepsi pushing to have the halftime show, she went on and played just one song "Don't Say Goodbye." Rubio who was brought to the stage in a parade of Harley's dressed for the occasion too, she had on a leather hat and fishnet arm stockings, and a pair of hot skimpy black shorts on her small frame.
