by Harvey Frommer Pele (born Edson Arantes de Nascimento) possesses perhaps the most famous nickname in sports history. Yet, strangely enough, even the man who has been called by this name all these years does not know how it originated or what it really means. Born October 23, 1940, in Tres Coracoes, Brazil Pele's life with a soccer ball is the stuff of dreams that began with a stuffed sock. As a poor youth he learned to kick a 'soccer ball' that was actually an old stuffed sock. Years later, after scoring his 1,000th goal, Pele was awarded a four-pound soccer ball made of gold. French President Charles de Gaulle Made Pele a Knight of the Order of Merit. A company in Brazil named a coffee after him that in the coffee-mad land became a bestseller. His legs were so valuable they were insured for hundreds of thousands of dollars. In 1960, after several European countries offered him $1 million to sign up with their clubs, the government of Brazil declared him a national asset making it impossible for him to leave Brazil without official permission.

Soccer: Maradona expected to edge out Pele

Diego Maradona, Player of the Century? Sunday, December 10 2000 1:05 Diego Maradona is on the brink of ending a miserable year, which began with a cocaine overdose, by being declared FIFA's player of the century. The Argentine bad-boy - rushed into intensive care after collapsing in January following a drug binge - has emerged as an unlikely favourite ahead of Brazilian legend Pele to pick up the award in Rome tomorrow night. Reports from South America, quoting top Argentine FA officials, said latest figures had Maradona with 78,000 votes and Pele on 26,000. Votes were registered on FIFA's website and by readers of the international body's magazine. The furore surrounding the race for the accolade is threatening to overshadow FIFA's annual guessing game to discover the World Player of the Year, which will also be announced tomorrow night. Portugal's Luis Figo, the world's most expensive footballer, French midfield wizard Zinedine Zidane and Barcelona's Rivaldo, who pipped David Beckham to the title last year, are the candidates. But their battle has taken a back-seat in the build-up to the evening amid raging speculation over just who should be declared the footballer of the 20th century. Originally it was expected Pele would win, he enjoyed far greater success at international level than Maradona, being a member of three World Cup winning squads and scorer of more than 1,000 goals in a glittering career that spanned three decades. Pele is also widely held to have conducted himself flawlessly on and off the pitch, fabled for his sportsmanship and becoming a world-wide ambassador for the sport in his retirement.

Soccer: Pele upset by Maradona snub

Diego Maradona,Awards snub Tuesday, December 12 2000 3:56 The rivalry between Diego Maradona and Pele raised its head again when the Argentina star left the FIFA award ceremony before the Brazilian received his Player of the Century award in Rome. FIFA officials had defused the embarrassing situation over who should be named Player of the Century by giving both three-time World Cup winner Pele and Maradona awards. The governing body originally planned to name only one Player of the Century with the winner being decided from a combination of votes from FIFA's website, the body's magazine and a grand jury. But amid reports that a cyber-blitz by Maradona fans had the self-confessed cocaine addict leading with 78,000 votes ahead of Pele on 26,000, the awards were split up into an Internet Player of the Century and a FIFA jury Player of the Century. And after originally threatening not to attend the ceremony Maradona left the gala dinner after receiving the internet award and before Pele received his accolade. "I want to go home," said the 40-year-old, who left accompanied by his wife Claudia and his agent. Pele said: " I would have liked Maradona to be there to join me on the platform, but he had already left." Maradona had earlier thanked FIFA for respecting the votes of the people, adding that he dedicated his trophy to: "The Argentinian people, Fidel Castro, my wife Claudia and all the players in the world that I love and respect, and the people who voted for me. I feel good in my head, serene. I'm happy and proud."

SOCCER: Pele, Maradona and Hugo Sanchez
From Mexico, Raúl Escalante writes: "'Second best' is a reference to Diego Armando Maradona, whom many people (mostly Argentines) regard as the best player of all time. Apparently Pelé gives these comparisons as much weight as they deserve - which is to say that he ignores them. No-one can deny the genius of Maradona. It is sad that, unlike Pelé, he is far from drug-free and a very poor role model. Drug dependence, however, is not explained by the temptations a youth faces, his success, etc. Hugo Sánchez, the best Mexican player of all time and a contemporary of Maradona, remained "clean" despite his long history of success (among other things he was five-time winner of the top-scorer trophy in the Spanish league, one of the two most competitive leagues in the world). Watching videos of both Pelé and Maradona playing are extremely exciting experiences - Paul Simon should try them". My comment: My lack of expertise is evident in the fact that I had never heard of Hugo Sanchez. I suppose that soccer will now disappear from the WAIS radar for another four years. Pele
The legendary soccer player Pele was indeed a ‘ Black Pearl ’ in the ocean of oysters. From playing with a ball made out of old socks, to dribbling the football under the noses of his opponents, Pele had come a long way. Along the road to success, he made many a stylish goals, that not only his goals, but even the defensive saves of opponents, made them famous. With an enviable world record of 1280 goals in 1362 games, he was and is indeed a star. His mere presence on the ground could announce truce between warring nations, turn arch rivals into avid fans and convert soccer fanatics to generous donors for noble causes. Such was the power that this dedicated player could wield, on and off the field. This bundle of power would hold the audience in awe till the dying moments of the game. Known for flicking last minute goals, he had legions of die hard fansin ruptures of joy that the boisterous game provided. He single handedly took the game ratings to the top. The jam-packed auditoria's that we see today, are the result of this man’s endeavor to achieve excellence and raise the stature of the game called Soccer. The pursuit for perfection saw him excel as an author, screen actor, composer and president of his own international business empire. All these ventures describe this all rounder as a man who ‘strives to keep Soccer truly popular, even today.

Pelé Soccer Champion Pelé was born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940 at Três Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the son of Celeste and João Ramos do Nascimento. His talent in the game of soccer was recognized early by soccer coach Waldemar de Brito, a former Brasiliam World Cup player. In 1956 de Brito took Pelé to São Paulo to try out for Santos Futebol Clube, a professional team. Pelé was accepted and played his first game on September 7, 1956 for the Santos team.
The following year, at age sixteen, Pelé joined the Brasilian national team under coach Sylvio Pirilo. In 1958 Pelé played in his first World Cup match. Pelé played in four World Cups: Sweden in 1958, Chile in 1962, England in 1966 and Mexico in 1970. Of these, Pelé won three World Cups, in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 professional games.
Pelé is given credit for stopping a war in Nigeria. When he played exhibition matches there, a 48 hour armistice was signed between the warring sides so both could watch the games.
