Pele, King of Futbol

"If you would use the word perfect, Pele almost is there. He was the greatest soccer player in the history of this game, says former West German star Franz Beckenbauer on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury. "Heroes walk alone, but they become myths when they ennoble the lives and touch the hearts of all of us," said former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. "For those who love soccer, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, generally known as Pele, is a hero." Pele. A name short in length, but long in significance. There are many stories that explain where the name came from, but none can explain the phenomenon. It all started in the backwoods of Brazil, where a young boy nicknamed Dico was playing his favorite game better than any of the other neighborhood kids. One day, the other boys started calling him Pele. He didn't know where the name came from, since it had no meaning in Portuguese, but he didn't like it. Dico fought the other kids thinking the name Pele was an insult. No matter. The name stuck. Pele, the athlete, came out of nowhere as well. In 1958, people turned on the television to watch the first international broadcast of the World Cup. Black and white screens flickered as a skinny 17-year-old, playing with imagination and verve, ran circles around seasoned veterans. By the end of that World Cup, the name Pele had shot across the globe.

Pelé
elé is the first soccer player to truly reach superstar status. His name is still mentioned even today, more than a quarter century after his retirement.
At the 1962 World Cup in Chile, Pelé missed out most of the tournament due to an injury. Brazil still managed to win the trophy. Similarly, at England 1966, Pele was once again was forced to leave the pitch after being ferociously kicked.
After England 1966, many began to doubt the Brazilian soccer player and his status as "The King of Soccer." He made a triumphant return at Mexico 1970 by dazzling worldwide audiences. This was the first World Cup broadcast in color and was shown across an unprecedented number of countries. In front of over 100,000 spectators at Azteca Stadium and millions of TV viewers, Pelé scored the first goal of the 1970 World Cup final. That opened the gates for Brazil's crushing 4-1 victory and reclaimed Pele as a superstar.
Later in the 1970's, Pelé used his commercial image to join New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League. He eventually retired as the only player with over 1000 goals in professional football. Pele was the first commercial superstar of non-commercial soccer.

Pele, gay? Soccer legend Pele has recently dropped a bomb in front of the Colombian magazine New Stage. The Brazilian was quoted that his first sexual experience was with another man. "He was homosexual," explains Pele "and even although I was just 14 at the time, I liked it. Nearly all the players from my team were dating that person." The credibility of the above claim is fairly unverified for now, but we'll keep you updated if Western news sources confirm! It may also be possible that Pele is making this up and trying to encourage actual gay footballers to come out of the closet. If this happens to be true, it would only solidify my support for Diego Maradona.

-Pele, on losing his virginity. "Soccer is the only sport (sic) where you can tune in to the middle of a match, watch for 30 seconds and not have any idea which direction each team is going." - Vijay Ramanujan "Soccer is like 90 minutes of foreplay, [f]ollowed by two weeks of, 'Wow, that was almost good sex.'" - Paul M. Parks "Soccer is like needing to get a boil lanced on your anal sphincter but the doctor tells you that you are allergic to the anesthetic. You'll do anything just to get it over." - David Barnes "If I'd just paid money to watch a soccer game, I'd want to kill someone too (once the buzz wore off and I realized where I was, because the only thing that would make me pay to watch a soccer game is perhaps a half gallon of whiskey)." - Tom O'Brien "The human body has arms, hands, shoulders, and a brain - why can't you incorporate these into your sport (sic) of soccer?" - John Leinaweaver "Americans get pummeled every few years for knowing and caring so little about the "world's game," but that's the world's problem, not ours. We're the nation with an embarrassing array of options, and that is a blessing that will never be confused with a curse. The U.S. loses to Germany on Friday, we'll get up from the table, walk across the room and check the box scores to see if Luis Castillo kept that hit streak going for the Marlins."

North American Soccer League (NASL) 1967-1984
Maintained by Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net The North American Soccer League was by far the most successful professional soccer league in United States History, also expanding into Canada. The information for this page was compiled from several sources. The player registers are derived largely from Colin Jose's "NASL: A Complete Record of the North American Soccer League". Two rival leagues started in 1967, the FIFA-Sponsored United Soccer Association and the renegade National Professional Soccer League. In 1968, they merged to form the North American Soccer League. The league florished for many years attracting many top stars and posting impressive performances and attendance figures, but overspending eventually forced the league into oblivion. Despite its unfortunate demise, the NASL briefly enjoyed the greatest success of any league in US history, albeit without the stability and long-term foundation established by Major League Soccer. A complete NASL Player Register has been published as "The North American Soccer League Encyclopedia", by Colin Jose. It may be bought through Amazon.com or directly from St. Johann's Press, 315 Schraalenburg Rd., PO Box 241, Haworth, NJ 07641. $29.95.

Because the 2600 (or VCS) was sold for over a decade, Atari went through four major label styles. The original style was all text on a black background. Then they started replacing much of the text with a colorful picture like the one on the box. Next, Atari went with a silver background. Finally, at the end of the console's life, they used a rust background. (Most collectors call it red; some call it brown. I think "rust" is more accurate than either of those.)
