Primitive, But Still Enjoyable By Ethan C. Nobles Pele's Soccer (C) Atari AKA Championship Soccer. Which one of these blobs is Pele? The computer is a surprisingly tough opponent. "Goooaaaaallll!!!!!" Related G o ahead and make fun of Pele's Soccer all you want. I know it's primitive, ugly and a game which tears the heck out of one's wrist. Regardless, this is a darn fun sports game and one of the finest early Atari 2600 cartridges out there. Besides, being a challenge for one player, the game is fantastic when two folks go head to head to see who can dominate this game which vaguely resembles soccer. Truth be told, I don't own Pele's Soccer . Instead, I have the Sears Tele-Games version of the title, which is just called Soccer . It's the same game, but I do wish I had that nifty cartridge with Pele's smiling face on the label. By the way, it's my understanding that this game represents the first time a celebrity – Brazil's own Pele, naturally – actually endorsed a video game.

    http://www.atariprotos.com/2600/software/rssoccer/rssoccer.htm
    Realsports Soccer
Name: Realsports Soccer Company: Atari Model #: CX-2667 Programmer: Michael Sierchio Year: Released? Yes Notes: This game not endorsed by Pele. While Pele's Soccer may have broken new ground in the field of celebratory fireworks, it certainly didn't do much for video soccer. An overhead view representation of soccer with small blobs for players didn't help sell the 2600 as a sports system, in fact feeble early attempts like Pele's Soccer actually turned many sports fans to the Intellivision instead. Atari needed to get sports fans back to the 2600 and fast! Thus the RealSports line of games was created.
While most sports games used small players on a large screen to sense of perspective, RS Soccer went with large characters on a normal sized screen. To create a proper sized playfield, Atari used scrolling techniques to create the illusion of the player running down a large field (one of the first games to do so). Atari also created the "wraparound" feature where the characters wrap around from one edge of the screen to the other (unless they have control the ball of course). So if your character goes off the right side of the screen he will reappear on the left edge of the screen. This may sound a bit strange, but it works well once you get used to it and can be used to set up some interesting passing plays.
As in most early sports games, you can only control one player at a time. The computer takes control of your other two teammates, and will attempt to make the appropriate decisions to keep the ball in play. This is where RS Soccer begins to fall apart, the computer AI is fairly limited and it's easy to beat the computer using the same plays over and over again. Had the AI been beefed up a bit, it would have added alot to the game. Because of this, RS Soccer is best played with two players.

Pele's list of the greatest living players is open to ridicule

    Find out more about
World Soccer magazine's online subscription offer. By Gavin Hamilton, World Soccer Magazine Greatest-ever lists be they footballers or movies, pop stars or motor cars are never definitive. Their subjective nature means they are always open to criticism. Pele's list of the 100 (actually 125) greatest living footballers, published this week as part of FIFA's centenary celebrations, is no different. Pele may have been the greatest ever player, but he has struggled to gain respect for his opinions since retiring as a player. Pele's reputation will not have been enhanced by the list. On the contrary, he has done himself considerable damage. It's easy to pick holes in such a list so here goes. A few obvious omissions:
What about Florian Albert, Bebeto, Igor Belanov, Roberto Bettega, Oleg Blokhin, Dragan Dzajic, Ryan Giggs, Johnny Haynes, Ronald Koeman, Ruud Krol, Ian Rush, Matthias Sammer, Enzo Scifo, Peter Shilton, Allan Simonsen, Luis Suarez, Marco Tardelli, Jean Tigana, Paul Van Himst, Andoni Zubizarreta? The apparent need to include as many countries as possible means Pele included two American women, Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm. But why not China's Sun Wen, voted FIFA's woman footballer of the 20th century? Would the Americans really have been that offended if Akers and Hamm had been omitted?

    Pele - Love, Love, Love
Thousands of stories have been written about Pele, but rarely did the writers compare him to other players. Pele was so extraordinary that he could not be compared. "Pele," said one writer, "was simply a genius, a marvelous union of brain and muscle." But as brilliant as Pele was on the soccer field, his playing skills were only part of his genius. Pele is also a fine, generous, warm person. The highest paid sports figure in the world, and a multimillionaire, Pele always finds time for kindness. As a player, Pele would sign autographs until he could barely move his arm. He would talk to strangers as though they were friends. Often, he would travel around the world to hold soccer clinics for young people. Thousands of children have learned soccer from the great, and humble, Pele. When asked what he would do during retirement, he said, "I'll be teaching young people around the world to play soccer. I believe soccer can unite all the peoples of the world. Soccer can fill the world with peace and love. Through soccer we can all be brothers. Soccer has one real goal - to create friendships.' In the early '70s the war in Biafra was stopped for two days because both sides wanted to see Pele play. Pele began his professional soccer career at the age of 15, playing with Santos of Brazil for 22. years. After his retirement, one avid fan said, 'Now that he is gone, part of my blood is gone. He has taken with him part of the heart of all the people in the world who love soccer"'

Home About The Hall Hall of Famers Kicks Store ... Games PELE (EDSON ARANTES do NASCIMENTO) Pele, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento has perhaps the most recognizable face in the world. When people hear the name Pele they think of one thing - soccer. Pele changed the game of soccer in many ways. One way he changed the game is that he brought style and grace to the game, which back in his early playing days did not have the flair and glamour that is now has. Pele scored an amazing 1,283 goals throughout his celebrated career. He scored a dozen of those goals in three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970) against some the greatest players who have ever walked on a soccer field. Pele earned 92 international appearances for Brazil and scored 77 goals. Pele showed a combination of skill, strength and agility that no player before him possessed. He was head and shoulders above his opponents, and he never backed down from a challenge. He showed millions of people across the world that soccer is 'A Beautiful Game' and encouraged millions of young kids to play soccer. Pele enjoyed success on the field from the beginning and held the record for the youngest player to ever play in a World Cup from 1958 when Norman Whiteside took the field in the 1982 World Cup for Northern Ireland. He was only 17 years old when he walked out onto soccer's greatest stage - the World Cup. He also became the youngest player to score and win the World Cup when Brazil won in 1958.

Home About The Hall Hall of Famers Kicks Store ... Games Pele (Edson Arantes do NASCIMENTO) Inducted: 1993 Position: Forward
Born: Tres Coracoes, Brazil - October 23, 1940 Pele became an international celebrity almost overnight as a result of his performances in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. There at the tender age of 17, he scored one goal against Wales, three against France and then two against Sweden in the World Cup Final. He missed the 1962 World Cup final in Chile through injury, but won his second World Cup medal in 1970 when Brazil beat Italy 4-1 in Mexico. In between Pele led his club team from the port of Santos to the World Club title in 1962 and 1963 and his presence made Santos the most famous club in the world until his first retirement in 1974. During his career he played in 93 full internationals for Brazil and in all first class matches scored a remarkable 1,280 goals, second only to Artur Friedenreich, another Brazilian, who holds the world record with 1,329. Pele's retirement at Santos in 1974 was thought to be final but in 1975 he stunned the world by signing for the New York Cosmos. His arrival produced a surge in interest and participation in soccer throughout the United States. Attendance at NASL games in which Pele played attracted record crowds. Other world famous players discovered the NASL and followed Pele to the USA including such international superstars as Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Johan Cruyff, Johan Neeskens, Eusebio, Carlos Alberto, and George Best.
