Talk of the Town
By AIDAN CORR Bord Gais Opera Gala
THE Bord Gais New Year Opera Gala 2003 comes to the University Concert Hall, Limerick on Thursday, 23rd January at 8.00pm. Audiences can look forward to a spectacular evening in true New Year Opera Gala style. The programme is brimming with sparkling operatic gems from the world's best loved operas, performed in a drawing room setting and introduced by the knowledgeable concert narrator, John O'Flynn. Once again, director Deirdre O Tuama has attracted an exceptionally brilliant cast, which includes the young Italian tenor Roberto Aronica who is now emerging as a major world star. He possesses one of the most stunning lyric tenor voices singing on the world's opera stages today, and regularly takes over from Roberto Alagna as the principal tenor in the premier opera houses around the world. One of Ireland's leading young sopranos, Alison Roddy, makes her debut in the Opera Gala series while Italian baritone Angelo Veccia will also make his first Limerick appearance.

FAI Junior Cup Quarter Final
Fairview Rgs 6 FAIRVIEW Rangers have carved another chapter in their pretty impressive history when they qualified to play in next season's FAI Senior Cup preliminary rounds with the possibility of games against Cork City, Limerick FC, St. Patrick's Athletic or Shamrock Rovers adding spice to yesterday's quarter-final game in Galway. Conditions for the game couldn't be worse. Driving wind and rain made conditions pretty miserable for both players and supporters alike. Fairview couldn't have asked for an easier passage for they totally dominated this game from start to finish. This match had great similarities with an encounter two years back against Roscommon team, Cloonfad when a poor pitch and a gale blowing down the field saw that Fairview XI gather their resources and give one of their best displays in recording a 6-0 win and going on to lift the FAI Junior Cup. Similar conditions on Sunday saw a repeat of that performance, this time resulting in a 6-1 win with the hope that this team can now go on and lift the trophy yet again. On this display it is well within their grasp. This was probably Fairview's best all-round performance to date in the competition with every player giving an excellent display whenever called into action. With a 4-0 advantage at half time the Limerick side quickly added No. 5 early in the second half and whatever little hope Kiltullagh had harboured, thereafter evaporated.

Administrator posted 13 November 2001 02:47 PM The Ballaghaderreen Under-12 team are on a roll at the moment, after progressing in the Roscommon Cup and S.F.A.I. Cup recently. In the Roscommon Cup they defeated a fancied Glen Celtic side 3-1 at the local pitch. Aoife Hardiman struck early on with a neat finish to put the home side ahead. Glen levelled early in the second half, but winger Daniel Browne restored the lead with an exquisite strike. The highly rated and very popular Philip Rogers made sure of victory with a well struck goal close to full time. In the SFAI CUP, again played on home soil, they defeated top Longford League side Camlin 2-1 in a passionate and ferocious battle. The on-form Aoife Hardiman netted early after great work by David Drake. The vital second goal came late in the half when Sam Durkin broke from defence and played a great through ball to the young but very promising Keith Rogers, who, with great composure, struck the ball high into the top corner for a goal of sheer quality. Camlin, clearly stung by the two goal deficit, came out with all guns blazing in the second half, but a tremendous rear-guard display and some superb goal-keeping by Niall Towey, reduced the visitors to a solitary strike late in the game. Daniel Browne did have a chance to wrap things up before this, but his great shot on the run just flew over the bar.

N Is For Nerveless!
By John Harding Martin Peters
Born in November, 1943, in Plaistow, East London, Martin Peters was the most versatile and, it is generally accepted, naturally talented of the famous West Ham 1966 World Cup-winning trio of Hurst, Moore and Peters.
A product of the Hammers' famous youth academy, he signing as an apprentice in May 1959 before turning professional 18 months later. Martin made his debut at home against Cardiff City in 1962 and went on to play in every position for the Hammers, including one appearance in goal in only his third senior appearance, as cover for an injured 'keeper! But it was as an attacking, creative midfielder that Martin truly made his mark on the English game. Tall, lean and blessed with great timing, Peters would often 'ghost' unmarked into forward positions to get on the end of crosses. The complete midfielder, he passed the ball well with either foot, was good in the air and difficult to mark because of his excellent movement. Indeed, England manager, Alf Ramsey, famously remarked in 1966 that Martin was 'ten years ahead of his time' in his tactical thinking and movement on the pitch.

Ron's no racist - McGrath Apr 25 2004
By Fionnuala Burke, Sunday Mercury Aston Villa legend Paul McGrath has revealed that Ron Atkinson called black players “coons” during training sessions. The retired soccer star claimed Big Ron used the racist term while manager of the Premier-ship club in the 1990s. Yet McGrath insisted that his former boss, who resigned from his ITV job last week for branding Chelsea player Marcel Desailly a “f***ing lazy big n****r” live on air, was an INSPIRATION to black players. When we put the claims to Atkinson yesterday, he did not deny using the derogatory term ‘coon’, but said: “You should have heard what the players called me!” Big Ron, from Barnt Green in Worcester-shire, resigned from his £200,000 job as a sports pundit after his outburst on Tuesday night following Chelsea’s Champions League defeat against Monaco. He thought his comments about Desailly to fellow commentator Clive Tyldesley were offair - but they were being broadcast to audiences in the Middle East.

Overview
Tony is a former Brazilian soccer player who came to the U.S.A. two years ago. He currently resides in Oldsmar, FL. He is self-employed and teaches soccer. His goal beyond anything else is to teach soccer to others and to get them to enjoy the game as much as he does. Tony is looking forward to spending more time teaching soccer at all levels of play.
Tony is a dedicated soccer person, who is able to spend lots of time talking about soccer for the pure love of the game. His soccer career started early in life during his elementary school years and continues on today. Through sports, Tony found the most valuable treasures in life: 1) Everlasting friendships; 2) The opportunity to learn how to respect and admire his fellow teammates and 3) He learned about his own strengths and weaknesses. All of these skills he still applies throughout his life today.
At age 17, Tony enrolled in the Brazilian Navy School, while there, he became one of the most important forward soccer players, getting the top score in many tournaments. At 19, he was chosen, along with many excellent Brazililan soccer players, to participate in a travelling soccer team that toured around the world. Tony then played for Federal University while he worked on his B.S. degree in Physical Education. While teaching physical education, Tony learned a lot about human physiology. He focused on how our muscle structure reacts to specific levels of exercise. This knowledge has been of great benefit to Tony when it comes to physical training. He recognizes that comprehensive physical training will bring an athlete to his/her peak of performance while minimizing the risk of injuries. It also helps when individualizing training to each soccer player.

Since Giggs is in average form lately, I'd say Scholes. His attacking and defending abilities make him a valuable player. Don't forget his winners against Everton and Olympiakos - he's the only player in Man U that can really win games in bad situations. soccer fanatic Roy Keane clearly is, just look at Man U without him. theorist But he can play at most one of 4 games, cuz he commits a brutal foul every tie he plays. soccer fanatic Originally posted by theorist

That is true, especcialy lately ofcourse, also with bad comments in the press. But whether you like him or not, he is the most important player for Man U. Giggs is great, but not on a decisive position. He can be replaced.

In the course of the last 50 years we have unfortunately lost contact with some of our former student-athletes and friends of the program. We are in the process of updating our records so that we may keep all of our alumni and friends informed and involved in our soccer family. On the weekend of September 19-21, we will be holding a very special reunion, or "Homecoming", for all of the former players, coaches, trainers, and staff that helped take CSU/Fenn to soccer prominence. We will be providing periodic information via email regarding special events and scheduling information about the program. Also, as a prelude to our September event, our web site will be featuring weekly profiles on many familiar faces from our program's past.
