As the fun continues, former Irish soccer international star, Paul McGrath shares his soccer expertise by holding a soccer skills class. Paul particularly loves these kinds of events aimed at young people. Geri Maye "Having people taking part in sporting activities like this, when it's on a special day like this, nobody takes it too seriously. Every person on that field was an athletes of some sorts, besides myself, and yet the fun element and the craic was there completely. Nobody took it too seriously. They are all very competitive in their own fields but there was no competition there today and I think it proved to everyone watching the game that this can be a lot of fun. It is a way of promoting sport amongst the younger generation."

Party Tips Sports Day Hurling Team it's not every village sports day that can boast the attendance of stars like Paul McGrath, Mick Galway or local hero DJ Carey but The Healthy Village sports day is not your typical sports day either. The celebrities turned out in style to participate and to pass on some of their skills. Sport at any level is very important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is also very important for young people to get involved in. Olympic silver medalist and President of the Sports Council of Ireland, John Treacey agrees. John: "From the Sports Council's point of view, we'd always like to emphasise the fun aspect of sport for young people and we'd also like to emphasise that sport isn't just for boys. It's for girls and young women as well. We'd strongly encourage both boys and girls to become involved and to enjoy their sport. In essence that's really what its about. We're trying to encourage a life long involvement in sport and that's not just for boys and girls but any community. Even people who may be past their best sporting days should still get involved."

NEWS SPORT AREA NOTES ... OTHER NEWS Ooh aah, it's Paul McGrath, chant delighted Killarney fans
KILLARNEY may be worried about attracting the tourists in the close season but the town is certainly experiencing no problems in luring living legends from the world of soccer.
Former Republic of Ireland and Glasgow Celtic netminder, Packie Bonner, was first to arrive to pass on valuable tips of the trade to enthusiastic soccer coaches at Mastergeeha's state-of-the-art new headquarters in Killarney.
It was part of an FAI coaching course that proved invaluable to local club officials but it was Paul McGrath that stole the show when he turned up in the town days later.
The former Manchester United, Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland star one of the most popular and talented players to ever wear the green shirt of Ireland was based at Ryan s Hotel where he hosted a soccer clinic for wide-eyed kids, anxious to learn from the undisputed master of class defending.
And there was more than one chant of ooh-aah Paul McGrath when the star turned up in The Laurels bar that night where he willingly discussed soccer matters with star-struck locals and willingly posed for a succession of photographs with the minimum of fuss.

    Ardagh Premier Cup
DE LA SALLE 0, TRAMORE 1
A LONE GOAL from substitute Paul McCarthy was enough to give Tramore a hard-earned victory against De La Salle on Wednesday evening last.
This first round Ardagh cup tie failed to produce a real cup tie atmosphere and McCarthy, who won the referees Youth player of the year award this season, was on target for his side with an excellent finish, thirteen minutes into the second half.
However, the home side, under the management of Declan Long and Billy Hearne gave as good as they got during the opening 58 minutes but after the goal was scored, this game petered out to a pedestrian conclusion and victory for the seasiders.
The home side did have a number of fine chances to find the back of the net but their finishing in front of goal let them down. The visitors, however, took the chance that fell their way and McCarthy finished the ball in style giving De La Salle keeper Liam Griffin no chance whatsoever.
Former Waterford United and now Tramore manager Paul Power would have been happy that his side managed to book their place in the next round of the competition but it has to be said that he and Declan Long would have been disappointed about how both sides failed to pass the ball around what was a very bumpy La Salle Park surface.

    Paul McGrath:'This job isn't therapy'
    Report by Dermot Keyes
P aul McGrath is adamant that his appointment as Waterford United's Director of Football is not a form of therapy to help him through his well-publicised personal problems.
Speaking in Waterford on Saturday, where he and new player/manager Alan Reynolds were unveiled to a packed press conference, the former Republic of Ireland and Manchester United star said he was relishing the new challenge.
"I'm not treating this as therapy for me," said McGrath. "I'm coming down to try and do well for Waterford United."
McGrath admitted that his new job represented "something for me to focus on and I'm looking forward to being as much help to Alan as I can".
Fans favourite Alan Reynolds, who returns to the club after a three-year absence, is chomping at the bit ahead of the new season, one he cannot wait for.
    Reynolds: 'A big challenge'
"It's a big challenge," said the new Blues manager. "I've been away for three years, and there's been a good few changes here in terms of the players, which is probably a good thing for me. If I'd been here all of that time and become good friends with a lot of the players here now, it might have created a problem for me taking the step up as manager.
"But I'm the boss now and all the players have to impress...we have to press to finish higher than last year and hopefully we can do that."
