Play Music Name at birth: Stanley Matthews Date of birth: Place of birth: Stoke-on-Trent, England Date of death: Place of death: England Place of burial: Staffordshire, England Sir Stanley Matthews C.B.E. was the first great English footballer of the modern era. Stan was never booked or sent off. His magical skills graced the soccer pitches of the world for an unprecedented third of a century, truly Stanley Matthews, the only man to be knighted before the end of his playing days, was a unique phenomenon. The Matthews mystique did not stem from his footballing ability alone. Throughout his career he remained a self-effacing, undemonstrative figure, utterly dedicated to the work ethic. He wanted the ball at his feet. He was the true winger, the fastest man in the game at that time over 10 yards which most consider are the ones that matter. Stan would shuffle slowly towards a defender, then sway to his left, as would his opponent - only to find himself tackling thin air because the Wizard of Dribble had changed direction at the last split-second and darted away on the outside! Once he was past there was no hope of catching him. He did it so often that opponents knew what was coming but, such was the great man's balance, timing and dexterity, they were unable to prevent it. Some critics reckoned his wiles slowed the game, but in reality they lured defenders out of position and created space for colleagues.

Sir Stan's Aura Lives, Lighting Up Wembley
    Soccer's Matthews Transcended Boundaries
By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune LONDON - Sport is no exception to life. However much we focus on progress, all of us are shaped by the past. On Wednesday, amid a shower of soccer international matches around the world, the death of Sir Stanley Matthews, the first knight of his sport, had a compelling, emotional effect. The fame of Matthews, ''the wizard of the dribble,'' transcended boundaries even before television could do the job; he was famous in Rio, in Budapest, in South Africa, in Malta and in Canada. And though Matthews was a man of his time - which spanned, at the professional level, an astonishing 33 years, from 1932 to 1965 - the specialist right winger created an unrivaled aura that survives his death. How strange, almost surreal, to be at Wembley, a stadium synonymous with the Matthews legend, on Wednesday night, and to learn just before England and Argentina played a 0-0 draw that the knight was no more.

by Charles Cuttone Although he never played on a World Cup Championship team, Sir Stanley Matthews, who died February 22 at the age of 85, became a global soccer icon the magnitude of which is rarely seen. He was the first British player to be knighted. Matthews' career spanned 33 years, from prewar days to the early 60's. He twice was named Footballer of the Year, in 1948 and 1963. Incredibly, the second award came when he was 48 years old. Known as The Wizard of Dribble, Matthews played his final game for Stoke City five days past his fiftieth birthday. Matthews is perhaps best remembered for what has become known as The Matthews Final, a reference to the incredible 1953 F.A. Cup Final, when he helped lead Blackpool from 3-1 down to a 4-3 win over Bolton to capture the cupthe only one of his career. The Official History of the F.A. Cup

His professional career covered some 33 years. When he retired in 1965 -aged 50 - he had made nearly 700 League appearances for Stoke City and Blackpool and had played for England 84 times, including two appearances for Great Britain. Take a look at Sir Stanley Matthew's career in pictures As an outside-right he was without compare. A thin, frail-looking man, he had a marvellous sense of balance and timing; his sudden bursts of speed over 20 yards or so was one of the wonders of the game, and earned him the nickname "the wizard of dribble".

Sir Stanley Matthews
History
Wiel Coerver, the great Dutch coach was a soccer visionary. His original ideas on skill development have had a profound influence on how soccer is taught around the world. The early focus of Coerver was on teaching ball mastery and 1 v 1 skills, enthusing young players to emulate the moves of some of the worlds soccer legends. In 1985, Coerver was joined by Alfred Galustian and Charlie Cooke and together they founded what is widely known around the world as Coerver Coaching. In 1996 Coerver Coaching was officially introduced to the Oceania region via Soccer NSW - in 2002 Gold Coast Soccer Inc became the sub-licensee for Queensland and is the only authorised supplier of Coerver Coaching in Queensland.
Throughout the year Gold Coast Coerver runs camps and clinics locally - the program is also starting to spread into the country regions with a successful program running in South West Qld.

AP By Phil Jones, CNNSI.com ATLANTA Tributes have been pouring in for Sir Stanley Matthews, who died on Wednesday at the age of 85. Others have matched and in some cases even surpassed his celebrity down the decades. But no player in England has ever been held in such high regard as both a genius with a ball at his feet and a gentleman with the public at large. Only when the television cameras rolled were world football superstars created. Images of Brazilian great Pele flashed around the globe, and, later, dazzling Dutchman Johan Cruyff and Argentine maestro Diego Maradona household names one and all. But long before they were beamed in living color to every corner of the Earth, it was a black and white case that Stan was the man. Stanley Matthews, a gifted played dubbed the "Wizard of the Dribble," the pre-TV soccer icon.

English legend Sir Stanley Matthews dies
First Published: Feb 23, 2000
English football legend Sir Stanley Matthews has died at the age of 85. Matthews played in the professional English game as a 51 year old and was the first player to be knighted by the Queen for his services to football in 1964. After retiring as a player he toured the world as a coach after moving to Canada and worked at a summer Soccer School in Malta. He was manager of Port Vale for a short time in his native Stoke but they were thrown out of the football league for irregular payments to players in his only season as manager. Matthews retired in May 1966 from top flight football by leading Stoke City to promotion in a season that saw Stoke home games cause some complaints. Before sell out crowds Stoke would bring local firemen to their Victoria ground stadium and water the pitch because Matthews liked a soft surface. His international career was cut short by six years as he served in the British Army as a sargeant major in the Second World War but was part of the English side who competed in the 1950 World Cup final and lost 1-0 to the USA.

PM to attend Stoke funeral of Matthews
First Published: Feb 28, 2000
Although there has been no official announcement from number 10 Downing Street it is widely thought that the PM, a big soccer fan, will attend to pay his last respects at the funeral taking place in the city of Stoke On Trent. A rumour had been circulating that the Queen would also attend although this looks unlikely. Matthews funeral looks set to bring the entire city to a complete standstill. Stoke On Trent has a population of 260,000 people and it is thought that as many as 200,000 people will be either on the streets, lining the funeral procession or attending St Peters church in Stoke where the service will be broadcast to those outside. Sir Stanley Matthews is without doubt the most famous person to emerge from the city of Stoke On Trent and although it would be crass to compare his death to that of Diana Princess of Wales, residents have been speaking of a air of sadness over the city not unlike that day when the Princess died two and a half years ago. As such it is thought that most of the city will turn out to pay their respects to Sir Stan who was born, grew up, lived and worked and died amongst them.
