About Advertising Info Cards Publications Memorabilia Features Latest News WILLS CIGARETTE CARDS FROM 1935-36 FEATURE YOUNG STANLEY MATTHEWS Cigarette cards have been around since the nineteenth century, both here and in Europe. The 1994 World Cup ignited an interest in soccer collecting and that interest is beginning to spread more and more toward the older cigarette cards. This interest is reflected in the modern world by the appearance of "web pages" on the internet dedicated to cigarette cards and collecting. Pre World War II British cigarette cards are among the most collectible and most popular items for soccer enthusiasts. These unique items present a different period to us. They are "low tech" items, a far cry from the shiny new cards being produced today. The cards themselves can be miniature works of art, with well drawn pictures and portraits. Being distributed in packs of cigarettes, they could be displayed in special albums that cost "one penny" to purchase.

The first gentleman of soccer
Sir Stanley played his last match aged 50
Sir Stanley Matthews - the first professional footballer to be knighted - was the most renowned player of modern times.
His professional career covered 34 years; when he retired in 1965 -aged 50 - he had made nearly 700 League appearances for Stoke City and Blackpool and played for England 56 times.
As an outside-right he was without compare. A thin, frail-looking man, he had a marvellous sense of balance and timing; his sudden bursts of speed over 20 yards or so was one of the wonders of the game, and earned him the nickname "the wizard of dribble".
His passing was extraordinarily accurate, and he was not so much a scorer as a creator of goals for others. Moreover, his sportsmanship was exemplary, and he was often referred to as "the first gentleman of soccer".
It was said Matthews' presence in a team could add 10,000 to away gates. Stanley Matthews: "Wizard of dribble" The son of a professional feather-weight boxer, Stanley Matthews was born near Stoke-on-Trent, in the Potteries, and joined Stoke City straight from school at the age of fourteen.

Sir Stanley Matthews
Sir Stanley Matthews (1915-2000) was widely acclaimed as one of England's greatest soccer players ever, but he never earned more than £50 a week plus a bonus of £25 per game. England team-mate Tom Finney said after he heard the news of Matthews' death: "I have so many memories of Stan and he was the greatest in my era in terms of close control. He was a humble man and he never got carried away by how well he played." In 1953 Matthews had his finest hour during the Cup Final. At that time Stanley played with Blackpool against Bolton Wanderers. Blackpool stood twenty minutes away from defeat with 3-1. His dazzling footwork carved out a hat-trick for Mortensen and with only twenty seconds to go, Matthews went on to set up the winning goal for Bill Perry. This game will always be remembered as "The Matthews Final". The two-times European footballer of the year was capped 54 times for England and made more than 700 Football League appearances for Stoke City and Blackpool. He played his last game in 1965 at the record-breaking age of 50 years and was knighted the same year. Matthews was the first knighted football player ever.

Livermore Youth Soccer League Soccer Rules are Brilliant by Stanley Lover (reprinted from FIFA Magazine) The Laws of the Game are incredibly brilliant. They must be because they provide us with a fun sport which millions of people enjoy. They are also incredibly dull, in their presentation, enough to switch off anyone searching for quick comprehension. Dull? Yes, but only if they are read as written. A brief glance at the rulebook shows just seventeen rules to govern the play but which, amazingly, do not include a single reference to the "Game of Soccer"!: Stanley Lover is an Englishman living in Paris who specializes in the Laws of the Game and has written several books on the Laws and refereeing. By Dan Chung
STOKE-ON-TRENT, England, March 3 (Reuters) MATTHEWS PLAYED FOR JUST TWO CLUBS A HUMBLE MAN : "That was very moving... very nice, I am glad I was here," Jack Charlton said outside the church. "I remember grabbing his shirt in a match once, and he just stopped and looked at me and I felt about 'this' big... I don't think I ever grabbed anybody's shirt again after that." Matthews made his international debut at the age of 19 and collected his last cap in 1957, aged 42, against Scotland. But his most famous game was for Blackpool, whom he joined from Stoke in 1947, in the 1953 FA Cup final against Bolton at Wembley, thereafter always called "The Matthews Final." With 30 minutes remaining, Bolton were leading 3-1 when Matthews, his baggy shorts flapping around his knees, inspired the comeback which has now become part of football's folklore. He tore the Bolton defence to pieces, set up three goals and was carried off the Wembley pitch shoulder-high by his jubilant team mates.
