Maradona finds peace playing golf
Argentine soccer idol Diego Armando Maradona says he has found peace of mind in communist-run Cuba where he has turned to golf for sport. "I'm not a champion...but I have a lot of fun playing golf," an overweight Maradona said in one of his few public appearances. The retired 43-year-old star has lived in Cuba for four years recovering from drug abuse that marred a brilliant and turbulent career. He plays golf most days at Havana's only golf course. "In Cuba I have found the tranquillity I couldn't find anywhere. Cuba has given me tranquillity, and that cannot be bought with all the money in the world," he said. Maradona, sporting large tattoos on his arms, said he missed his two daughters, his former wife Claudia and his native Argentina, but is happy living in Cuba. Wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sneakers, he was speaking to reporters late on Thursday at an event honoring outstanding Latin American sports figures. The soccer legend is regarded as one of the finest players ever, leading Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup, where he scored celebrated goals against England. Maradona said he would attend a farewell game for retiring Colombian soccer player Carlos Valderrama in Barranquilla, Colombia on Feb. 1, but he won't play.

Diego Maradona
Diego Armando Maradona October 30 ) is a former Argentinian football player. He is generally regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He was born in Villa Fiorito, Buenos Aires , Argentina. Maradona first played in the Argentinian Championship, for Argentinos Juniors (1976-81) and then for Boca Juniors (1981-82). Then he went to Spain , where, playing for FC Barcelona , he won a Copa del Rey . In June he went to Naples to join Napoli, where he won two Italian Championships (1986-87 and 1989-1990), a Coppa Italia (1987), a UEFA Cup (1989) and an Italian Supercup (1990), plus Napoli were runners-up in the Italian Championship twice. He led the Argentinian national team to victory in the World Cup in , winning 3-2 in the final against West Germany . In this tournament, he became notorious for a goal in the quarter-final game against England Hand of God " which had caused him to score the goal, to the general derision of the English public and in particular the tabloid newspapers, who still resurrect the incident occasionally even today. However, Maradona showed the other side of his nature just a couple of minutes later in the same match, by running half the length of the pitch and beating almost the entire English team along the way, to score what is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful goals in football history.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) Diego Maradona is heavily sedated in intensive care following a crisis of hypertension or high blood pressure, his doctors said on Sunday after the Argentine soccer great was taken ill and admitted to a clinic. Maradona, who has long been in therapy to battle a drug addiction that has left him a bloated shadow of his former self, was breathing with the help of a respirator and his condition was "reserved," the doctors said in a statement. "Diego Armando Maradona has been admitted to intensive care ... because of a crisis of hypertension related to miocardium," said the statement issued to reporters outside the clinic.

Maradona: San Diego David Hawkes
Bad Subjects , Issue # 35, November 1997 October 30, 1997, was Diego Armando Maradona's thirty-seventh birthday. That day, he received news that his father had died. Then he received news that this news was not true. Shaken by the experience, and doubtless reading into it various arcane and mystical significances, Maradona immediately announced his retirement from soccer. This is the sixth time in his career that he has made such an announcement, but it is probably the last. In August, Maradona tested positive for cocaine after a match for his present team, Buenos Aires' famous Boca Juniors. The first time he tested positive for cocaine, in 1991, he received a fifteen-month suspension. He received another fifteen month suspension in 1994, after being thrown out of the World Cup in disgrace, the "performance enhancer" ephedrine coursing through his veins. Like almost everyone else, only more, world soccer's governing body FIFA hates Maradona. They will certainly persecute him to the fullest possible extent. Unless he can prove his claim that someone spiked his tonic water with cocaine, Maradona's playing career is over. As his previous experiments in that direction have proved, Maradona conspicuously lacks the "leadership" skills required to function as a coach. It is possible to imagine all sorts of interesting futures for Diego Maradona, but they do not involve an active role in soccer. Nor is Maradona likely to follow the dignified footsteps of Pele to a ministerial position in his national government.

Football idol Diego Maradona was improving and responding to treatment in a hospital ringed by well-wishers, doctors said, as he fought for his life after a major heart attack. Argentina's soccer legend Diego Maradona is seen kissing the 1986 World Soccer Cup after Argentina defeated West Germany in Mexico City. [AFP/File] The 43-year-old Maradona, whose fame as a spectacular but controversial footballer gave way to tales of drug abuse in recent years, was admitted to a private clinic late Sunday with heart trouble. By Monday Maradona was on a respirator due to a lung infection, which complicated his heart condition. He suffered a heart attack four years ago. "His heart has not been further damaged," his doctor, Alfredo Cahe, said. Cahe, who has also attended former president Carlos Menem, said there was a "slight improvement" in Maradona's overall condition although he remained on the critical list. Cahe said that Maradona's condition had been complicated by an infection on both lungs, however the doctor said he was confident that "he will respond positively to treatment with antibiotics."

After visiting Maradona at the private clinic where he is being kept against his will on Friday judge Norberto Garcia Vedia said: "He's not in a condition to decide on his internment at the moment. "He's still experiencing the effects of a crisis, even if he is getting better." Maradona, who came close to death last month with heart and lung problems, was admitted to the Parc private drug rehabilitation clinic attached to Buenos Aires' Italian Hospital on the orders of his family. According to his family if he continues to accept treatment he will be given permission to leave the centre in a week to pursue help for his cocaine addiction abroad.

Maradona The Living Legend
International football legend Diego Maradona, who has a history of drug abuse, is under intensive care in a Buenos Aires clinic on Sunday after suffering acute heart failure. Considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, the 43-year-old former captain of the Argentine national team is today unable to breathe by himself, amid rumours about the cause of the illness.
By Kanika Goswami, 4/21/2004 The left-footed Maradona, who has been battling drug addiction charges for a while, suffered a severe heart crisis in Uruguay in 2000, due to a cocaine overdose. He then began a long recovery in Cuba, but since an overweight Maradona returned to Argentina, speculation and concern has grown over his health.
Ironically, it was in 2000 that Maradona tied with Pele for the accolade of FIFA's best ever player.
A flashback into the life of the god of the football field…
In his colourful 20-year career, Maradona won Italian and Argentine league titles and led Argentina to World Cup victory in 1986 and second place in 1990. But the story started long ago. In 1970 precisely, when the 10-year-old Diego tried out for Los Cebollitas, a junior team. Thereafter, Los Cebollitas remained unbeaten for 136 matches and became a legend. This gave followers a fair idea of what was to come.

Troubled Argentine star a complex case study
Click here for more on this story Posted: Tuesday January 11, 2000 05:12 PM Two summers ago I was standing in a hallway at the Stade de France, roughly an hour before the World Cup Final between France and Brazil. Pele was a few steps away, surrounded by a thronging mass of sweaty journalists, all eager to get a word with the great man. The Brazilian legend was being pushed this way and that, simultaneously giving interviews in five languages. All of a sudden, there was a commotion at the other end of the hall. The herd of journalists turned their backs on Pele and stampeded past me like a bunch of buffalos in heat, knocking over a FIFA minion and his stack of papers. When the dust cleared, I was left alone with Pele, his bodyguards and one of his public relations flaks.

WHO IS DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA?
Diego Armando Maradona has been the greatest football player ever!
To prove this, just think that the most beautiful goal in the history of football was scored by Maradona in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico against England, when he dribbled 6 English players and the goalkeeper scoring an amazing goal... just few minutes after his world-famous "Hand of God" goal, when he scored with his hand and the referee did not notice that! Born on October 30, 1960 in the poor slums of Villa Fiorito in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Diego grew up with soccer. He was nicknamed "El pibe de oro" (the golden boy): he started in Argentinos Juniors, then joined Boca Juniors and led the Argentina youth team to win the world cup in 1979. After the 1982 world cup in Spain, when he was already an idol, he joined Barcelona and played in Spain for two seasons. In 1984 he joined Napoli and won here two Italian Championships in 1986/87 and 1989/90, a Coppa Italia (1987), an UEFA cup (1989) and a Supercoppa Italiana (1990). In the mean time, he was the hero of Argentina's triumph in Mexico 1986 World Cup since he led the team to the final victory. Unfortunately, after failing a dope test in 1991 he was banned from the soccer fields. After the suspension, he went to Spain to play for Sevilla and then back to Argentina with Newell's Old Boys. Then, after a pair of coachings in Argentina, he came back to Boca Juniors. In the World Cup of 1994 in the USA, Maradona was tested after the match against Nigeria and was found to have used "ephedrine", not permitted by FIFA. He was suspended from playing soccer for more than a year as punishment. Although Argentina came in with a strong team in the 1994 World Cup, everything went downhill and, without their captain, they were soon defeated.
