1-0. 77. Juninho. Struck shot in off post after Govou laid ball in from left. Real Sociedad's first ever appearance in the Champions' League is over, and they are out of the competition after losing 1-0 at Olympique Lyon. The Basque side were a goal down from the first leg, but Raynald Denoueix took a cautious approach at the beginning, with five men in midfield and Nihat on the bench. Alkiza shot just wide and Gabilondo had another effort saved by substitute keeper Vercoutre, who had replaced the injured Coupet early in the first half, but the French team also had their chances and Alberto had to be at his best to keep the scores level at the break. The introduction of De Pedro and Nihat on the hour mark revitalised Real's game, and Xabi Alonso had a header cleared off the line by Deflandres. But in the next play, Govou broke down the left and played the ball in for Juninho to shoot in off the far post and put the game beyond the reach of the Spaniards. The 3,000 or so travelling fans went home disappointed, but at least their team had put on a brave performance.

0-2. 18. Rivaldo. Took short pass from Luis Enrique to score into empty net
1-2. 66. Luyindula. Headed in after Bonano stopped Juninho shot.
2-3. 94. Gerard. Ran ball into goal on breakaway with keeper stranded. An injury time goal by Gerard against Olympique Lyon ensured Barcelona's pass through to the second phase of the competition. After limited success with his three man trident, Rexach left Saviola on the bench, bringing in Gabri rather than Geovanni on the right of midfield. The Spanish side raced into a two goal lead with only eighteen minutes on the clock after their forwards took advantage of defensive errors, the first when Kluivert rolled the ball in to an empty net after Coupet could only block Luis Enrique's shot, and the second after good work by Xavi and Luis Enrique found Rivaldo unmarked in front of goal. The goals came against the run of play though, with the French side unable to capitalise on their many chances before half time thanks in part to another fine performance by Bonano.

Soccer: The score was 1-0, but both teams were winners Peter Berlin IHT
Monday, May 17, 2004 PARIS When the final whistle blew at Parc des Princes in Paris, the coach of the winning team clenched his fist and gave a little punch of triumph. A few yards along the sideline, so did the losing coach.
Lyon, which started the next-to-last round of the French league four points ahead of Monaco and six ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, had just lost, 1-0, on Saturday to the Parisians.
But before the end, the players on the field had received signals from the bench that indicated a barely believable result from Monaco, which if true, meant Lyon would become France's champion.
"With three or four minutes to go, we learned that Rennes was winning, 3-1," said Patrick Müller, the Lyon captain. "But there was a moment of doubt. Was Rennes truly beating Monaco, or was it being beaten?"

Player Power Rules, O.K.? No, It's Not
    World Soccer
By Rob Hughes International Herald Tribune LONDON - It was never the lynch mob that some observers described, but when five Manchester United players crowded around the referee during an English league match last weekend, things were more ugly than the sport of soccer should tolerate. The scenario is becoming dangerously commonplace in a game where players, now among the highest earners of the human work force, see themselves as celebrities untouchable by the law. Manchester United is the most successful team in Europe and its mentality is the following: If people do not love the club and its style, that is their problem. Its players seem to believe belligerently that they are right and that anyone who rules otherwise is wrong. This is a problem for the sport at large. But the flashpoint on Saturday came before a crowd of 61,267 spectators and a television audience of millions. Jaap Stam, Manchester's dollars 17 million Dutch defender, was surprised by the darting run of Juninho, the Brazilian forward playing for Middlesbrough.

Parreira preferred Juninho to Manchester United's Kleberson, who has only just come back from injury, against Peru in Lima on November 16 and at home to Uruguay in Curitiba three days later. The Brazil coach had high praise for the new call-up. "I selected Juninho as he is an excellent player who is in fine form physically and technically and with great experience," Parreira said. Brazil's established stars Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Rivaldo were also called up in a 17-man squad from players at clubs outside Brazil. Brazil won their first two matches in the 10-nation group, a 2-1 victory over Colombia and a 1-0 win over Ecuador.

Vasco da Gama target Juninho
First Published: Apr 16, 1999
South American champions Vasco da Gama are lining up a £12 million bid for Atletico Madrid midfielder Juninho. The Brazilian club want the 25 year old to team up with Edmundo at the end of May if they can complete a deal. Atletico are not keen to sell their star player but Juninho's future at the club has been in doubt since his rows with former coach Arrigo Saachi. A return to Brazil would help Juninho's ambition of returning to the national side but Vasco would want him to play on after the Spanish season as Edmundo has agreed to do after his move from Fiorentina is completed in May. Juninho was signed by Atletico in a £13 million move from Middlesbrough in 1997 but his career in Spain was hampered by a serious leg break which ended his chances of playing in the World Cup in Francer and the selection of Saachi as team coach with the Madrid club. He regarded the Brazilian as a luxury in his side and relegated him from the first team when he could. SS Lazio are also interested in Juninho who played for Sao Paolo in his early days.

Headed Goal is based on the dice-and-chart game, but this design has been expanded in several ways to offer many user options and key tactical decisions while still maintaining the integrity required of any replay simulation. Pick your team, set your formation, brief your players. Pass to feet, or look for your towering striker. Push players forward in search of the winning goal, or switch to 5-5-0 (!) to defend a one goal lead away from home. Keep an eye on the action to spot those players not performing on the day. Is your key midfielder tiring late in the game? Do you need fresh legs for extra time? Is your best penalty taker sitting on the bench as the dreaded shoot-out approaches?
